T-Mobile Introduces New Contract-Free Plans

evenmore.JPG

T-Mobile introduced a range of reasonably priced, no-contract unlimited use plans today with their “Even More Plus” plans.  Their new plans are cheaper than other major carriers in many circumstances, and the no-contract options are the most affordable I’ve seen so far from a major carrier.

The “Even More Plus” plans have no contract required, with free nights, weekends, and T-Mobile to T-Mobile calling. Unlimited plans cost $49.99 for talk only, $59.99 for unlimited talk and text, and $79.99 for unlimited talk, text and smartphone Web access. Two-line family plans are $79.99 for talk, $99.99 for talk and text, and $139.99 for talk, text and smartphone Web. Plans with limited minutes are cheaper.

Motorola Releases Droid Specs, Photos on Web Site

droid1.jpg

Motorola tonight released the full specifications and a photo gallery of the highly-awaited Droid phone on their public Web site, pre-empting the anticipated October 28 announcement of Verizon Wireless’s first Android smartphone.

According to the Motorola site, which was first noticed by the Boy Genius Report blog but then independently confirmed and loaded by PCMag, the Droid is a large touchscreen phone with a sliding keyboard. It’s 2.4 x 4.6 x .5 inches in size and weighs six ounces. That’s relatively heavy, but slim. Its color will be “licorice w/brown sugar accents.”

The phone has an unusually high-resolution, 3.7″ 480×854 touch screen; the iPhone’s touch screen is only 320×480 resolution.

The Droid’s OS is Android 2.0, as Verizon previously showed on their teaser Web site for the device. It is the first Android 2.0 phone.

The Droid has a 550 Mhz processor, according to the site, which didn’t describe the processor architecture. The architecture is important because most Android phones up until now have run on 528 Mhz ARM11 processors, which some users consider sluggish in some circumstances. The recently announced Samsung Moment upped the ante to an 800 Mhz ARM11. If the Droid runs a newer form of architecture, known as Cortex-A8, it could be faster with a lower clock speed.

More details and photos after the jump.

Clearwire, Sprint, Comcast Announce More WiMAX Launch Dates

wheresclear.jpg

Hot on the heels of Clearwire’s soft launch of WiMAX in Philadelphia today, the WiMAX company announced more rollout plans in conjunction with their partners Comcast and Sprint. All three companies sell service on the same network, but they do it under three different names, with three different service plans: CLEAR, Comcast High-Speed 2go, and Sprint 4G.
November 2009: Austin TX, Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, Greensboro NC, Raleigh NC, San Antonio TX, Seattle. Also, Philadephia will get Sprint and Comcast service (they have Clearwire already.)
December 2009: Honolulu and Maui, HI
Of those cities, Chicago, Philly and Seattle will have plans from all three providers. The rest of the cities will offer Clearwire and Sprint, but not Comcast branded service.

Verizon Plans Droid Event On October 28

droidinvite.jpgLooks like we don’t need to bother deciphering coded countdown clocks any more. Last night Verizon Wireless sent out a bunch of invitations to a press event on October 28 for “2009’s most highly anticipated phone.” Engadget, InformationWeek and Gizmodo got invites, and we did too.

It’s safe to assume this invite is for their new Motorola Droid Android-powered smartphone, as the invite comes with the same graphic I’ve seen on other Droid-related materials — though the document never uses the word “Droid.”

That still leaves the question of when the Droid is going on sale. Verizon’s TV commercials say November, and we received a postcard yesterday that said “11.09”. Does that mean November 9th, as I surmised, or does it mean a vaguer date sometime in the month of November, as many readers suggest? Could they change the date between now and then? Guess we’ll find out next week.

Clear WiMAX Launches in Philadelphia

clearmap.jpg

Philly is now the nation’s most advanced wireless city. Clearwire just soft-launched their “Clear” WiMAX service in the Philadelphia metro area, offering claimed speeds of 3-6 megabits/sec for PC modems and the Samsung Mondi handheld device across a chunk of Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. If you want the speedy service, though, you’ll have to subscribe to Clear, not to their partner Sprint 4G, who have not yet launched in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia has an unusual number of high-speed, wide-area wireless networks. Folks in northeast Philadelphia can zip along on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ test network, the fastest form of 3G in the nation. The city has also been blanketed for a few years by a free Wi-Fi network that was once run by Earthlink, but is now operated by local organizations.
The Philadelphia launch is especially important for Clearwire because it’s their first city in the heavily populated northeast quarter of the US. Previously, CLEAR had been available in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Portland, OR, and some smaller cities outside the Northeast. Sprint’s 4G is also available in Baltimore, MD.

Unboxing Verizons Droid

droid1.JPGA box arrived for me from Verizon’s PR firm today, with a wonderfully scary little robot-eye sticker on the side. Given that the Motorola Droid launch is coming on October 28, could this be the new phone? Head to the jump to see what happened when I unboxed the contents.

New Verizon Droid Dates: October 28, November 9

droid-date.jpg

We’ve got fresh news today on the Verizon/Motorola Droid front. Verizon Wireless’s first (and highly-awaited) Android phone is now tipped to do … something … November 9, according to a small postcard I got in the mail from Verizon’s PR agency today (shown at left.)
Combine that with the coded countdown on Verizon’s official Droid site, which now counts down to October 28 instead of the original October 30, and we have what look like announcement and sale dates for the first Android 2.0 phone. October 28 and November 9. Keep them in mind.
The “Droid” will be Verizon Wireless’s first Google Android-powered phone, built by Motorola. Two weeks ago, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam promised the first of several Android phone launches “in a few weeks” and followed up with an official press photo of himself and Google CEO Eric Schmidt wielding two Verizon Android phones, one assumed to be the Motorola device and the other looking like a variant of Sprint’s HTC Hero.
No other phones so far have run version 2.0 of the Android OS, codenamed “Eclair,” though the appearance of a giant inflatable pastry on the Google campus last week foreshadowed its coming.

Motorola Readying Second Verizon Phone Already?

motorcalgaryleak.jpg

Yawn. So, who else is bored of all of this Droid talk? Sure the phone isn’t out yet (or, really, even officially announced), but who isn’t ready to start planning for a second Motorola/Verizon Android handset? Apparently there’s one in the works already–actually, if the pictures leaked to Boy Genius Report are to be believed, the thing looks to be well on its way.

The phone–apparently codenamed: Calgary–seems to be the carrier’s answer to the T-Mobile Cliq. The device apparently runs Motorola’s Android Blur software, which would mean that it’s heavily focused on the social networking aspect of things, thus targeted largely toward the teenage Sidekick crowd, who, are likely not all that happy with T-Mobile/Danger at the moment.

The device has a QWERTY slider keyboard, Wi-Fi, and a 3MP camera.

Motorola Verizon Droid Launch Imminent

droidmailer.jpg

Hey guys, it’s really happening! If you needed any more proof that the first Android phone for Verizon is coming–and coming soon–the carrier has begun sending out scary, Halloweeny mailers sporting the rather ominous words, “The Day of Droid is Approaching.” Judging from the words and pictures, Verizon no doubt want us to believe that Google sent this Motorola handset from the future to save the world from future iPhone iterations.

Oh, and get this–the phone may not be out (or even officially announced), but you can already pick up cases for the Motorola A855 over at Best Buy Mobile (don’t worry, it says “Motorola Droid” on there too–in really small letters).

Oh, and according to a few intrepid code crackers, the countdown on the Android site has been pushed up to October 28th. Happy early Halloween.

Sidekick Owners: You Can Get Your Contacts Back

sidekick.jpg

Sidekick users who have been angry at T-Mobile and Microsoft’s Danger for losing their personal data have received a little solace: Microsoft is now offering a recovery tool on T-Mobile’s Web site to help owners of the mobile device retrieve their lost contacts. This tool will restore contacts only, but Microsoft said in a statement that it is working on retrieving photos, notes, and other data as well.

The Sidekick data-loss saga started the first weekend of this month, when Danger had a massive server outage, and Sidekick users–whose data was in the cloud–lost all of their personal information. T-Mobile USA and Microsoft have slowly become more optimistic about data recovery since thenh, but the PR damage is already done.

Afflicted users can launch the contacts recovery tool by visiting the My T-Mobile Web site.
