iRun Does Portable Livestreams, Makes You Look Like a Jerk

iRun getup.jpg

Joseph Tame will be competing in the Tokyo marathon this month, and yes, he will be dressed like that. It’s all part of the British runner’s plan to live stream the event. The bizarre getup includes four iPhones, an An Android handset, an iPad, three routers, a heart monitor, and an atmospheric mointor.
Says Tame,
This technology will allow me to broadcast live video on two cameras (using either skype or FaceTime to a local studio for re-broadcast), send live location/pace/heart rate data via Runkeeperon the iPhone, transmit temperature, COx/humidity/noise levels via a custom-made Android app – and do all of this while looking incredibly cool.
You’ll be able to watch it all through Tame’s site on the 27th. Video of the devices in action, after the jump.

Windows Phone 7 Firmware Update Bricks Some Samsung Devices

Samsung Omnia 7

Samsung users looking forward to the latest Windows Phone 7 firmware – you know, the one that will add copy/paste and tons of bug-fixes to their device – may want to hold off for a little while: a number of sites and sources are reporting that the firmware update is “bricking” some Samsung Omnia 7 phones, or rendering them useless, even if you attempt to hard-reset the phone or connect it to a PC to restore it.
Samsung and Microsoft have both called off the update until they can identify and resolve the issue, but admittedly this isn’t a great start to the process of bringing the Windows Phone 7 handsets currently on the market up to speed.
According to a post at WinRumors, Microsoft knows what the issue is and is working to resolve it quickly so the updates can start rolling again, and they’ve been suggesting owners who applied the update only to brick their devices should take their phones back to their wireless carrier stores or retailers to exchange for a new device. For its part, Samsung hasn’t said much about the issue.

AMD Will Not Release Smartphone Chipset

amd-785g-chipset.jpg

AMD has plans that may not sit well with shareholders. The company is telling people not to expect a smartphone chip. However, AMD did admit that a chip for tablets will be coming out shortly.

Unlike Intel and smaller chip makers who are joining the ever-growing smartphone demand, AMD appears to have no interest in them.

I wonder why AMD does not want to join the popular demand? However, it does take a lot for the company to issue a statement that is against the grain. Though, in the long run I wouldn’t be surprised if the company eventually changes its mind.

Atrix 4G Hacked Before You Can Even Buy It

0,1425,i=244228&sz=1,00.jpg

Following in the steps of the HTC Evo before it, the Motorola Atrix 4G has been hacked to give root privileges before the phone is even available to buy. In more evidence that Android hackers are frequently out-pacing the creators of the phones themselves, the third post in the xda-developers thread where the root was announced was a half-sarcastic “why did it take so long?”

Right now, this is more of an academic achievement than a practical one for two reasons. First, the actual steps to obtain root privileges haven’t even been released to the public. Second, there is still a good chance that one of the main draws of rooted phones, custom ROMs, will be difficult to install thanks to an encrypted and locked bootloader.

While rooting your phone is highly discouraged (as it’s likely to cause an increased security risk, break all kinds of terms of service and make your carrier very unhappy) the speed of this announcement is nothing short of astounding. If the amount of interest that the hacker community has in this phone is paralleled by the general public, it looks like Motorola and AT&T might have a winner on their hands.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Not Verizon Exclusive

Thumbnail image for sony xperia play.pngWhenever we hear about a new smartphone, the word “exclusive” springs to mind. That appears to be a thing of the past. The new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will not be exclusive to Verizon only, says that Sony Ericcson CTO. Unlike Apple, he stated that the phone will go to other carriers in time. However, he didn’t mention any dates.

The Sony Ericsson brand is known in Europe better, where all phones are GSM-based. Since Verizon uses the different standard, it also requires more work for the company. However, because of the upcoming European release, Sony should have a GSM model for America soon enough.

The CTO also shared that unlike other phone manufactures, Sony has plans to keep the Android OS updated. Sounds like Sony Ericsson is serious about making a splash in the US smartphone market.

No iPhone Nano Coming – Report

iPodnano201.jpg

The New York Times has weighed in on the steadily increasing rumors regarding the next version of the iPhone. The iPhone nano that we’ve been hearing so much about? That’s not happening, apparently.

According to the paper, a cheaper version of the handset is coming–but not a smaller version. That revelation comes from the usual group of anonymous sources who were “briefed on Apple’s plans.”

The next version of the phone will be the same size as previous versions–a smaller versions of the phone “would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate,” sayeth The Times.

A smaller iPhone would also make using apps a pain, leading, perhaps to a sense of fragmentation amongst developers. Something that Apple has cautioned companies against, in the wake of Android’s success.

Drug Dealers Love iPhones

Now, granted, my knowledge of the modern drug trade is entirely based on the TV shows Breaking Bad and The Wire, but I was under the impression that drug dealers were partial to “burners”–pre-paid cell phones that you can toss away every week or so. Turns out that the iPhone is actually a popular choice amongst members of the drug trade.

This revelation comes from a recent interview with an anonymous Apple Store employee. “We get a lot of drug dealers who try to buy iPhones with fake IDs,” the employee told Popular Mechanics. “You can tell them instantly just by how shady they act, and they know you know, but you obviously can’t start accusing them of being drug dealers–they are customers, after all.”
It gets better, “But when they try to check out, they’ll use what are obviously fake IDs or fake credit cards, and it often turns out they’re using a dead person’s Social Security number or something. And when you call them out on that–then, they run.”

New York City Intros Android, iPhone Condom App

nyc condom app.jpg

According to a recent study, your smartphone doesn’t make you quite as sexy as you might think. That said, if you are managing to get some, in spite of the overwhelming odds, as Steve Jobs would tell you, you’ll really get a better reception if you get a rubber bumper.

The New York City Health Department is celebrating Valentine’s week with the release of its New York City Condom Finder, a free app that will locate the five spots nearest to your location that offer up free jimmy hats (within the five boroughs).

Says NYC’s assistant health commissioner, Dr. Minoca Sweeney, “We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex. A lot of people come here for that, so we want them to practice safer sex.”

The app is available now for the iPhone and Android.

Skype to Disgruntled Nokia Employees: Please Apply

Nokia just can’t catch a break. Just last week, over a thousand Nokia developers walked off the job in protest over their company’s new partnership with Microsoft to bring Windows Phone 7 to Nokia’s mobile devices. Google’s response was less than subtle: “we’re hiring, come on over!”
Now Skype is joining the chorus as well. Skype’s CEO, Tony Bates, said at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week that “There is going to be tremendous talent out there,” and that “Our primary engineering focus just so happens to be somewhere between Finland, Estonia and Stockholm, so you can imagine that’s a great opportunity and we’re hiring.”
Ouch. On the bright side, those Nokia engineers tasked with Symbian as their active project won’t have to look far to find new work. On the other hand, Nokia likely won’t be winning any “best places to work” awards in the immediate future, given the employee outrage.
