Sailfish Mobile OS Might Arrive On Older Samsung Devices Soon

Sailfish Mobile OS Might Arrive On Older Samsung Devices SoonHmmm, Jolla’s Sailfish OS and Samsung in the same sentence? It does not quite add up, but that might very well be the reality if what an engineer from Jolla tweeted earlier today (you can see the tweet right after the jump) holds water in due time. Apparently, it was alleged that the SailFish mobile OS will arrive on Samsung devices soon. This is a pleasant surprise but not one that catches anyone with their proverbial pants down, since Jolla did churn out successful ports of the OS in the past for the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 devices which ran on the Android platform. Older Samsung handsets do seem to be the next target for Jolla, so you might want to hold on to those family heirlooms for the moment.

iPhone App Keeps You Updated On Drone Strikes

iPhone App Keeps You Updated On Drone StrikesWould it be somewhat morbid if you could download an app that would basically track drone kills conducted over in the Middle East? After all reading about the death and carnage caused by war in the newspapers alone is a little disconcerting, let alone being notified in real-time whenever there are drone strikes. Then again we guess there are some who are curious and want to be updated all the time, and now there’s an app for that called Metadata+. Developed by John Begley, this app has been in the works for several years now but has constantly been rejected by Apple, originally claiming to be not entertaining enough, before it was told to Begley that his app might have content that users might find questionable. John Chen Thinks CEOs Don’t Care About Apps

John Chen Thinks CEOs Dont Care About AppsWhen it comes to choosing a smartphone platform, there are factors to think about. Do you like the way it looks? Do you like its features? Can I customize it to my liking? Are there many apps available for it? And so on. If there is one disadvantage that BlackBerry has compared to Android and iOS is the lack of native apps available for the platform. Sure you can run Android apps but at the same time we’re sure that BlackBerry 10 users would prefer if developers were to create apps optimized for the platform, right? Well apparently to John Chen, perhaps apps might not necessarily be that important after all.

Speaking to Forbes, Chen was asked if a small player like BlackBerry can survive even when giants like Microsoft are struggling in the mobile market dominated by Apple and Android, Chen’s reply was in the affirmative and likened BlackBerry to Porsche and Lamborghini, and was quoted as saying, “You have CEOs of major companies who whip out their BlackBerrys because of the keyboard. They don’t care about apps. And, by the way, from a security point of view I’m starting to worry about where these apps are actually coming from.” That is certainly very radical thinking which might explain how he got the job in the first place, but what do you guys think? Will this sort of thinking be what it takes to turn BlackBerry around?

Sprint’s Galaxy S4 Could Receive KitKat Update Tomorrow

Sprints Galaxy S4 Could Receive KitKat Update TomorrowWhile Android Jelly Bean is perfectly fine as an operating system, we’re sure many Android users out there would love updating to the latest build nonetheless, which at the moment is Android 4.4 KitKat. Well the good news for Sprint’s Galaxy S4 users is that thanks to what appears to be an internal memo obtained by the folks at Android Central, it has been suggested that the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the handset will begin rolling out on the 13th of February which is tomorrow, so Galaxy S4 owners on Sprint’s network will definitely want to keep an eye out for it!

Apart from the updated features and improvements brought about by Android 4.4 KitKat, the memo suggests that the update will also bring about Zact Mobile compatibility and also prevention pop-up removal. As is the case with most, if not all Android updates, they will typically be pushed out in batches and phases, meaning that if you don’t see your update while your friends or family have received theirs, fret not because your update could be around the corner and waiting for you the next day/week. In the meantime for those eager to get the update, you can check to see if you can manually fetch it by going to your phone’s Settings, About Phone, System Updates.

    IDC: BlackBerry’s Marketshare At 0.6%

IDC: BlackBerrys Marketshare At 0.6%It is no secret that BlackBerry isn’t so hot at the moment as they are losing sales even in markets that they once dominated, but hopefully under the leadership of the company’s new CEO, John Chen, things will start looking up for the Canadian company, but in the meantime it looks like the company will just have to ride out the storm. According to a recent report from research company, IDC, it has been revealed that BlackBerry’s marketshare for smartphones in Q4 2013 has been revealed to be at a low of 0.6%. In a way this is “good news” as a previous report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners have put BlackBerry at 0% last month.

Of course we doubt that it is truly 0%, but perhaps the numbers were so low that it might not have been worth mentioning. However this is still bad news for BlackBerry as the IDC had put BlackBerry’s marketshare at 3.2% a year ago, suggesting that the company’s marketshare had fallen by 2.6% over a year. Like we said things aren’t looking so hot for the Canadian company at the moment, but everyone loves a good comeback story and hopefully BlackBerry and its new CEO will be able to oblige the masses with a good one. In the meantime what do you guys think of BlackBerry’s situation for 2014? Or will John Chen need more than a year to turn things around?

Nokia Teases Possible Valentines Day Announcement

Nokia Teases Possible Valentines Day AnnouncementDoes Nokia have more announcements they plan on making ahead of MWC 2014? Perhaps. The Finnish company has recently posted a photo on Snapchat (pictured above) in which a string of numbers was revealed, “63,0,87,0,14,02,2014” The last set of digits seem to suggest that something will be revealed on the 14th of February 2014, which is Valentines Day, but unfortunately the first 6 digits remain a mystery. Some have speculated that the first 3 digit – 630 – could be talking about the upcoming Lumia 630/Moneypenny that was hinted at back in December.

The Lumia 630, for those unfamiliar, is rumored to be a upcoming dual-SIM handset from Nokia, but apart from that not much else is known. Unfortunately the next 3 digits – 870 – are a mystery as there has not been any mention of a Lumia 870 to date. Could it be the upcoming Nokia Normandy which might get the “870” moniker? Or could it be a different device entirely? The Nokia Lumia Icon was just recently (and finally) announced so we can scratch that off our list, but either way check back with us on the 14th of February to see what Nokia has in store for us as it will be interesting to see what sort of devices Nokia might announce ahead of MWC 2014.

Alleged Xiaomi Mi4 Specs Revealed In Benchmarks

Alleged Xiaomi Mi4 Specs Revealed In BenchmarksXiaomi might not necessarily be a name known to many outside of China, and unsurprisingly so as the company’s products have typically been limited to a release in China. However they have been getting some attention as of late as they have managed to hire ex-Googler, Hugo Barra. That being said, we expect with Barra’s expertise in Android that we can look forward to better Android products from Xiaomi, and perhaps that might come in the form of the Xiaomi Mi4, the company’s rumored upcoming flagship smartphone.

Just recently the handset was spotted on the AnTuTu benchmarks and assuming that the results are accurate and that this is the Mi4 we are looking at, it certainly looks like it will be packing quite a punch. The benchmarks have revealed that the handset will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chipset clocked at 2.46GHz, a Full HD display, 3GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera, and an 8MP front-facing camera, and will be accompanied by 16GB of onboard storage. The benchmarks also revealed that the Xiaomi Mi4 was running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, although hopefully it will be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat upon its release. No word on when Xiaomi plans on unveiling the Mi4, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.
