Alleged HTC Desire 8 Handset Leaked

Alleged HTC Desire 8 Handset LeakedAccording to our earlier report, HTC will be looking to launch mid-ranged devices in 2014. In 2013, the Taiwanese company did not exactly focus on mid-ranged devices, unlike in 2012 where we had phones like the HTC One S and HTC One V which were low-mid ranged handsets. Well it seems that HTC will indeed be keeping to their words, thanks to a recently leaked photo from Chinese website, MyDrivers, which apparently shows off an upcoming handset from HTC called the New Desire 8. The folks at Engadget have also managed to get their hands on the alleged original image, thanks to their source which you can see in the image above.

In any case HTC has yet to make an official announcement regarding the New Desire 8 handset, but according to the rumors, the handset is said to sport a 5.5-inch display along with a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, and will be available in a variety of colors such as white, red, yellow, orange, and cyan. It also looks like the design of the handset has taken some cues from the HTC One as it appears to sport front-facing stereo speakers as well. Also based on what we can see, it looks like the device will also feature on-screen buttons just like the HTC M8 is rumored to have as well. In any case the device looks pretty sleek and elegant and could make a worthy mid-ranged handset, but until we hear from HTC, take it with a grain of salt for now.

Nokia Rumored To Launch Multiple Android Devices This Year

Nokia Rumored To Launch Multiple Android Devices This YearWe guess by now everyone has learnt that Nokia could be set to debut an Android phone of their own come MWC 2014. It’s an interesting move considering that Microsoft will be acquiring the company, but then again we guess it could be like the case of the Nokia N9 which was Nokia’s first and last MeeGo efforts, and in a way a swan song before they are bought out by Microsoft. That being said, reports from the Chinese media have suggested that the Nokia Normandy/Nokia X will not be the Finnish company’s first and last Android efforts, but would actually be the first of several Android handsets the company has planned for the rest of the year.

According to the reports, the Nokia Normandy is a low-end Android device (as expected based on its specs) and that Nokia has plans for higher-end Android devices that could be released sometime in the May-June timeframe. The report cites inside sources from Artesyn Technologies, whom Nokia is one of their clients as the company deals with design, manufacturing and sales of embedded board solutions and power conversion for networking. Like we said the fact that Nokia could be going ahead with the Nokia Normandy is pretty interesting given their situation at the moment, but for them to release more Android devices? Take it with a grain of salt for now but what do you guys think?

Samsung Tops Smartphone Sales In China

Samsung Tops Smartphone Sales In ChinaThe advantage that Samsung has over Apple is that they have a wider range of smartphones, ranging from the high-end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3, to the lower-end devices that will appeal to shoppers on a budget or emerging markets, which is why it is no surprise to hear that Samsung has managed to get themselves ranked as number one for smartphone sales in China last year. According to the reports, Samsung took the first place followed by Lenovo, Huawei, and Coolpad, with Apple coming in fifth.

Interestingly enough despite Samsung taking the lead spot, reports claim that smartphone sales in China is actually on the decline. In Q4 2013, smartphone sales in China saw a rise of 21.9%, although on an annual basis, the number has been 15.9% year-over-year, which led to analysts suggesting that there could be a declining trend in sales of smartphones for the country. It is also interesting to see that Samsung is beating out local vendors like Huawei and Coolpad, showing just how dominant the South Korean tech giant really is, but what do you guys think? Are you really that surprised to find out that Samsung, and not Apple or any local Chinese company is doing so well over there?

iPhone 5c Rumored To Be Discontinued Post-iPhone 6

iPhone 5c Rumored To Be Discontinued Post iPhone 6The iPhone 5c can hardly be called a success. In fact Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, had admitted that sales of the iPhone 5c were lower than expected. We’re not sure why the iPhone 5c didn’t do well, perhaps it wasn’t cheap enough or perhaps it didn’t have as many features to justify its price, but if there’s one thing it did do was help drive iPhone 5s sales, at least that’s what the analysts seem to think. That being said, will there be an iPhone 6c later this year? We’re sure Apple had kicked off the iPhone 5c with hopes to continue it with every generation of iPhones they launch, right?

Well it turns out that the iPhone 5c will be dropped completely once the iPhone 6 is launched. This is according to a report from the South China Morning Post who claims that Apple will be discontinuing the iPhone 5c once the iPhone 6 is launched. The iPhone 5s on the other hand is expected to be kept around although it will be made from cheaper materials. We’re not sure what that means since using cheaper materials would essentially turn it into another device, but since nothing is confirmed for now, take it with a grain of salt. In the meantime what do you guys think? Do you think the iPhone 5c will be discontinued?

Sprint Added 682,000 New Customers Last Quarter

Sprint Added 682,000 New Customers Last QuarterSprint has recently announced its Q4 2013 earnings where they revealed that they have managed to add 682,000 customers during the last three months of 2013 alone, which admittedly is a pretty impressive feat. According to the breakdown, 322,000 of their new customers opted for Sprint’s prepaid plan, while only 58,000 were new postpaid customers. The remaining 302,000 were wholesale buyers, at least that’s what Sprint has revealed. Unfortunately despite the addition of new customers onto their network, the carrier has also announced that they experienced a loss of $1 billion which while a lot, is down from $1.3 billion which the carrier reported in the same period back in 2012.

This is apparently because the carrier was only able to sell 5.6 million smartphones during the three month period which is apparently not a good sign at all. That being said, with these numbers, perhaps the T-Mobile and Sprint merger might not be such a bad idea after all. With T-Mobile’s aggressive Uncarrier strategy and efforts to steal customers from competing networks, it would no doubt aid Sprint in expanding their reach. That is if regulators give their approval, of course.

    Xiaomi Announces New Redmi Brand

Xiaomi Announces New Redmi BrandEarlier this year word on the street was that Xiaomi was working on a new handset called the Hongmi 2. We’re not sure what has happened to the device since, but thanks to a post by Hugo Barra (formerly of Google), it looks like Xiaomi could have decided to change the name of the Hongmi to Redmi, although based on Barra’s post, it seems that Redmi is more of a brand rather than an actual device, like how Samsung has their Galaxy series of Android devices, Nokia their Lumia lineup and so on.

According to Barra, “Today we’re introducing our new brand #Redmi to the world (originally “Hongmi” in Chinese), and it’s soon coming to Singapore!” Barra also provides a link to Xiaomi’s website but unfortunately apart from the typical marketing spiel, not much is known about Xiaomi’s phone plans. Could the Redmi be talking about a lineup of devices or are we talking about a single handset? Could the Hongmi 2 be part of the company’s new Redmi brand? In any case it seems that the launch will be happening soon so perhaps we will learn more then. It is also unclear if this means that the launch will only see the release of the new device (or devices) in Asia or if it will rollout to those of us living in the US as well, but either way we will keep our eyes peeled.

Deutsche Telekom Taking Its Time To Exit US Market [Rumor]

Deutsche Telekom Taking Its Time To Exit US Market [Rumor]For those unfamiliar, Deutsche Telekom is the parent company of US carrier T-Mobile. As you might have heard, there have also been talks that T-Mobile could be bought up by Sprint and in the past we have seen how other carriers, such as AT&T, have attempted to purchase T-Mobile as well. All of this seems to indicate that Deutsche Telekom wants to exit the US market as they believe that by being fourth place, behind AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, it would limited their long-term profitability. Google Now Understands Your Relationship Connection

Google Now Understands Your Relationship ConnectionAt last, Google Now will enable you to refer to people by relationship whenever you want to make a voice call or a text, which is a good thing actually. For those who have tried to make use of Google Now voice commands in the past, you would run into limitations of voice commands if you want to call someone with a more unique name. Basically, not everyone has a name that is easy for the voice command system to understand, but you can be sure that voice recognition is moving in the right direction. Well, Google has introduced the ability for Google Now understand your referral to other contacts by relationship, thanks to the relationship descriptor. This would mean you are able to say, “Call dad” or “Text my wife”, and it will do so.

    eBay Removes Flappy Bird Listings

eBay Removes Flappy Bird ListingsAs you might have heard, Flappy Bird has been removed from various app stores, apparently for our own good. However there are several enterprising gamers out there who have decided to go on eBay and sell their phones for hundreds of dollars, claiming that Flappy Bird comes preinstalled. We thought that maybe these listings were made for fun, but apparently there were several bids made on some of these phones, suggesting that the need to own Flappy Bird is for real, but thankfully eBay has since removed these listings as it has violated eBay’s guidelines.

According to emails that eBay has sent out, the listings were removed as they had violated eBay’s guidelines on selling used devices. The guidelines state that, “Smartphones and tablets must be restored to factory settings before they are allowed to be sold on eBay,” before specifically mentioning, “Please remove all content from your device, including the game Flappy Bird, before you attempt to list your item again. Please be sure your current and future listings follow these guidelines, keeping in mind that additional listing violations could result in the suspension of your account.”

Samsung’s Rumored “Context” Service Will Collect Your Data

Samsungs Rumored Context Service Will Collect Your DataOne way of improving an app is by writing a review for it which provides feedback to the developer on what sort of changes should and could be made. However it seems that Samsung could be looking to make that a more automated process, thanks to a report from The Information who claims that Samsung is developing a service called “Context” in which it would allow third-party services to offer targeted features to a user based on what he/she likes. In a way this is kind of like how Facebook and Google offer users targeted ads, but instead of ads, what Samsung hopes to achieve with Context is to offer up improved app experiences.

Based on the information being collected, such as what you type, what apps you use, what kind of data is collected by your phone’s sensors, it will then allow developers to use that information to tailor apps to your liking. For example if you frequently search for vegetarian recipes, a cook book app might open up with vegetarian recipes listed by default since it knows that is your preference, or a restaurant-locator might list vegetarian restaurants first, and so on. In a way it is kind of creepy and sort of like an invasion of our privacy, and thankfully the service has reportedly been delayed as Samsung is debating as to whether such a service would actually help them sell more phones, but what do you guys think? Is this a service you would like to have on your phone?
