TSMC To Work On iPhone 6′s Touch ID Sensor [Rumor]

TSMC To Work On iPhone 6s Touch ID Sensor [Rumor]Touch ID was one of the new features that was introduced with the iPhone 5s and we can only assume that Apple will be bringing that feature to the iPhone 6. That being said, will Apple be making any changes or improvements to Touch ID for the iPhone 6? We guess we will just have to wait and find out, but thanks to a new report from DigiTimes, they are claiming that Apple will be turning to the 8-inch processing for the iPhone 6 versus the 12-inch fabrication process which apparently Apple was a little concerned over in terms of yield rates.

“Apple previously decided to have TSMC produce fingerprint sensors for its next-generation iPhone at the foundry’s 12-inch facilities using a 65nm process, the sources noted. However, acknowledging risks associated with 12-inch WLP technologies, Apple has finally chosen TSMC’s 8-inch processing which enables mature yield rates for WLP to produce the fingerprint sensors, the sources said.” So what does this mean for the end user? Well as you might recall, iPhone 5s units were in short supply when they were first released and this was apparently due to the Touch ID’s production. So with the kinks ironed out and with a more refined processed being used, perhaps iPhone 6 supply will be better than that of the iPhone 5s.

Nokia RM-1013 Could Be The Company’s Cheapest Phone To Date

Nokia RM 1013 Could Be The Companys Cheapest Phone To DateNokia has been known for putting out cheap and affordable handsets, from back in the day of the feature phone, to today where their low-end Lumia smartphones have proven to be their best seller. That being said, it looks like Nokia might have their cheapest smartphone in the works, thanks to a listing on Indian importation record, Zauba. The listing reveals a phone going by the model number Nokia RM-1013 which appears to be a Windows Phone device. It was also listed as being priced at INR 6,282 which when converted, is around $100. Imagine that, a handset so cheap and fully unlocked! If Nokia did not already dominate with the Lumia 520, we can only imagine that this handset will be a hit in emerging markets.

However in terms of specifications, not much is known about the device, but then again for a handset priced at around $100, don’t expect anything amazing. The device should be more than capable of getting the job done and then some. Microsoft had previously revealed their intentions of maintaining Windows Phone in both the high and low end markets, so with this handset, it looks like Nokia will be doing that for them ahead of the acquisition which is rumored to be closed at MWC 2014.

Samsung’s Unpacked 5 Teaser Hints At New UI

Samsungs Unpacked 5 Teaser Hints At New UICome MWC 2014, Samsung is expected to hold their Unpacked 5 event on the 24th of February. The company recently sent out invites and now thanks to a new teaser image that Samsung has posted onto Twitter, we might be getting our first official look of the new UI that will be making its way onto future Samsung Galaxy devices, namely the Samsung Galaxy S5 which has to be one of the more highly-anticipated smartphones of 2014. The icons don’t specifically mention any apps or devices, but they are reminiscent of the leaked Magazine UI that will allegedly make its way onto the Galaxy S5.

Samsung has in the past been criticized over its TouchWiz UI. They aren’t the first as there are many out there who feel that Android OEMs shouldn’t put their own interface on their devices as it would cause unnecessary lag due to the added features which may or may not be appreciated by the user. However with the new Magazine UI, it looks like Samsung will be shaking things up a bit as the interface does look a lot cleaner, although admittedly we are reminded of Windows Phone when it comes to that tiled interface. In any case it will be interesting to see what Samsung will be bringing to the table so check back with us during MWC 2014 for the details!

LG G2 Mini Might Be Bluetooth Certified

LG G2 Mini Might Be Bluetooth CertifiedDo you feel as though it is compulsory these days for companies to roll out a “mini” version of a current device? For instance, the folks over at Samsung has the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, while HTC has their HTC One Mini, with Sony jumping aboard the bandwagon with their Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. This leads to the question – what about LG? I guess LG is not too far away from releasing a “mini” model from their collection of smartphones, with whispers of the LG G2 Mini making its rounds since last December.

    New YouTube Web UI Tested

New YouTube Web UI TestedYouTube, a property of Internet search giant Google, has certainly done its fair share of work to improve the mobile versions of its products and services. In theory, these web versions of their products will be able to run on just about any HTML5 browser regardless of the platform, and it seems as though Google is now working on the mobile version of YouTube’s user interface. This particular user interface update for its YouTube app would most probably see the card UI which Google has been working on a whole lot in recent times.

    BlackBerry Losing Popularity In Indonesia

BlackBerry Losing Popularity In IndonesiaBlackBerry is the brand that was once loved by enterprise users around the world, and eventually it started to gain some traction with regular folks as well who loved the exclusivity of BBM and the feel of BlackBerry’s keyboard. However touchscreen smartphones started to become more popular  and BlackBerry failed to capitalize on that trend early, leading to them losing ground to Apple and Samsung in most markets. However BlackBerry did retain a few loyal markets, such as Indonesia where the handset was extremely popular amongst the younger crowd, but it looks like even then their loyalty has begun to wane.

According to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (via the Jakarta Globe), it seems that BlackBerry’s shipments to Indonesia only accounted for 14% of the 11 million smartphones shipped to the country last year. Of course shipped does not equal to sales, so even if BlackBerry consisted of 14% but managed to sell their entire shipment, it would still be a good thing, although in reality that rarely is the case. When asked why they would switch from BlackBerry to a different platform, Indonesians claimed that lag and lack of features were some of the reasons, with Darwin Lie, an analyst at IDC Indonesia echoing those sentiments by saying that other platforms offer up more apps, making it a more attractive option.

French OEM UCall Could Adopt The Windows Phone Platform

French OEM UCall Could Adopt The Windows Phone PlatformOne of the advantages that Android has is that it has many, many OEM partners. In fact due to its open-source status, there are manufacturers who create Android devices and not necessarily with Google’s blessing either (missing Google services and Play Store), but the fact remains that Google’s reach is helped by its many manufacturing partners who create a range of devices for customers. Well it looks like Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform will be getting a new partner in the form of French OEM company, UCall, who will be announcing their new Windows Phone smartphone at MWC 2014.

In fact this Windows Phone handset will be UCall’s first Windows Phone device as the company has in the past only released Android phones. UCall’s Windows Phone efforts will be that of a low-cost device that will supposedly cost less than €100, so it will definitely be interesting to see what kind of specs it will pack, and how well it will be received. After all devices like the Nokia Lumia 520 have gone on to do very well for itself for being a budget handset, so perhaps UCall’s product will be able to achieve the same amount of success as well. No word on whether it will see a release outside of France, but check back with us during MWC 2014 for the details.

A lot of people have been reaching out to him on Twitter in order to find out exactly why has he pulled the game. While Nguyen previously said his decision wasn’t due to any legal troubles, two of his friends tell Reuters that he had actually received a legal notice from Nintendo.

    BBM Head Leaves BlackBerry

    BBM Head Leaves BlackBerry

The top management at BlackBerry has been shuffled over the past few months, with several executives from the previous regime being shown the door, including ex-CEO Thorsten Heins. New BlackBerry CEO John Chen has brought on his own team, and has since structured the company into four major divisions. It was first rumored earlier today that BBM executive vice president Andrew Bocking had left the company, though it wasn’t entirely clear then if Bocking had left on his own or if he was shown the door, or if he had left at all. The company has confirmed that the former BBM head made the decision to leave BlackBerry.
