Sony Ends Software Support For A Dozen Android Phones

Sony Ends Software Support For A Dozen Android Phones

One major difference between iOS and Android is fragmentation, the latter being the perfect example of a mobile operating system which sees varied adoption of different iterations. Much of this is due to manufacturers ending software support for their devices. While most high-end Android smartphones are usually supported for up to 18 months, most low-end or mid-range devices often don’t receive any major updates after they’re launched. These devices do contribute to the global Android stats, even if they’re region specific, which is just one of the reasons why there’s so much fragmentation on Android. Sony has ended software support for a dozen of its Android smartphones.

iPhone 5c Catches Fire And Burns Schoolgirl

According to reports by various media outlets, in Kennebunk, Maine, a 14 year old school was treated for second degree burns after her green iPhone 5c apparently caught fire at school, while it was still in her pocket. As per reports, a “pop” sound was heard before “smoke starts billowing from around the student,” said Jeff Rodman, principal of the school. This led the girl to panic, knowing that her pants had caught fire, which was most probably caused by her iPhone 5c.

This probably won’t surprise a lot of people. Word on the street is that Samsung is also preparing multiple variants of its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5. The company has already sent out invites for its Unpacked 5 event, which is presumably where the Galaxy S5 will finally be unveiled to the public. Last year the Galaxy S4 was followed up by a few variants, which looked a lot like the flagship, but offered varying specifications. The company is expected to go down the same road again this year, by releasing multiple Galaxy S5 variants after the flagship hits the market.

Everything.me Moves Out Of Beta After 2M Downloads
It has taken more than a couple of million downloads of Everything.me, where this particular app will finally move out of beta, and is finally available as a full app in the form of its Android launcher. Apart from that, the new full Everything.me app will also come with a slew of new contextual features, including a new design and a new launcher name, no surprises that it is called EverythingMe. In this new version, it would also include the release of several tent-pole features such as a true contextual phone, where your handset will deliver just what you need, and when you need it, depending on your context (time, location, preferences, history and much more).

Sony Xperia Device With Thin Bezels Leaked

Sony Xperia Device With Thin Bezels LeakedWith the competition getting stiffer with each release, we don’t expect Sony to be resting on their laurels this year. According to the rumors, Sony is expected to announce a new handset at MWC 2014 in the form of the Xperia Z2. Now based on what we can see, the Xperia Z2’s design isn’t much to shout about, but thanks to a couple of newly leaked photos, what we have in the photo above is apparently a Sony Xperia handset with extremely thin bezels. Like we said, photos of the Xperia Z2 have been leaked in the past and the bezels in those leaked photos are definitely not as thin as the one pictured above, leading us to believe that this could be an unannounced Sony device that could be announced later in the year.

However given the photo quality and the fact that the entire photo itself is rather blur, it’s hard to tell if the photo is even genuine in the first place, although the icons and the background are distinctively Sony. In any case make what you will of it, but a device with such thin bezels is definitely something we wouldn’t mind checking out. Thinner bezels tend to lend itself to the illusion that the phone’s display is bigger than it really is, which is great for those who would prefer if their devices were not of the phablet variety. In the meantime what do you guys think? How would you feel about a handset with extremely thin bezels?

Android 4.4.2 For US Cellular Moto X Could Be Released Soon

Android 4.4.2 For US Cellular Moto X Could Be Released SoonLast we heard, Android 4.4.2 is said to be making its way onto T-Mobile’s Moto X in the near future, and if you’re wondering how soon is that, perhaps the next couple of days could be it. This new rumor is according to an anonymous US Cellular representative who claims that the carrier is ready to push out Android 4.4.2 KitKit to its own Moto X handsets in the US. Of course given that this roll out is for US Cellular customers only, we can’t speak for the availability of Android 4.4.2 KitKat for other carriers, but presumably they should be rolling out, at least that’s what the rumors seem to suggest.

Those of you who own a US Cellular Moto X, you will be able to check for the updates by going to your phone’s Settings, About Device, and Check for Updates to scan manually to see if there are any updates to be had. Of course we expect the updates will be rolled out in phases so even if your friend gets theirs first, don’t worry as we expect that yours should not be too far behind. In any case we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the US Cellular Moto X, but in the meantime take it with a grain of salt for now and try not to get your hopes up just yet.

LG G Pro 2 Will Feature OIS Plus Camera Technology

LG G Pro 2 Will Feature OIS Plus Camera TechnologyMWC 2014 is around the corner and we expect that many smartphone and tablet manufacturers will take the opportunity to announce something new. LG is one of those companies and we expect that the LG G Pro 2 will most likely be announced then. So far what we do know is the the handset does exist. The handset will also be a follow up to last year’s LG G Pro which was designed to compete with the Galaxy Note 2, meaning that we can expect something of the phablet variety with the LG G Pro 2 as well. Now as far as other specs are concerned, we have only heard the rumors, but thanks to a new post by LG Korea, they revealed the LG G Pro 2 will feature a 13MP camera with OIS Plus technology.

As we’re sure some of you guys know, OIS stands for Optical Image Stabilization which basically helps reduce blurred photos caused by movements from your hand. So with OIS Plus, it’s essentially the same thing but will combine software-based image stabilization with hardware-based stabilization, and will also reportedly help capture sharper photos in low-light situation as well, which was one of the notable features of the LG G2. Other features of the LG G Pro 2’s camera includes the ability to capture video at UHD resolution, so if making 4K videos is your thing, perhaps the LG G Pro 2 could be worth keeping an eye on.

Facebook Paper Name Disputed By Developers FiftyThree

Facebook Paper Name Disputed By Developers FiftyThreeJust last week Facebook announced its brand new Paper app which was basically a new way for Facebook users to view their News Feed. The app has since been made available for download but only to those using iPhones and are living in the US. Now if you’re wondering why you might have heard the name “Paper” before, it is because back in 2012, developers FiftyThree announced an app called Paper. The app is completely different from Facebook’s app in the sense that it is a drawing app and has nothing to do with social media (apart from the fact that you can share your drawings). (more…)

BlackBerry Wants You To Spread The BBM Word With Gifts

BlackBerry Wants You To Spread The BBM Word With GiftsWhile BlackBerry might not necessarily be doing too well in the smartphone department, there is at least one area that they might have some hope in and it is BBM. The app which was previously an exclusive for the BlackBerry platform was launched on iOS and Android devices last year, giving BlackBerry and even larger reach, although admittedly the app would have to compete with the likes of other messaging apps out there.

While the app itself is free, BlackBerry has not been shy about thinking on how to monetize the app, but if they are hoping to do that, they will probably need to get as many users as possible, which is why BlackBerry has recently launched a new promotion in the US and Canada where they will be giving away movie tickets and gift cards to users who share the app. (more…)
