Tapulous Bids Adieu To Tap Tap Revenge Franchise

When I got my first smartphone, the iPhone 3GS, one of the first few games I downloaded was Tap Tap Revenge. After all playing games like Guitar Hero on the PS3 was already so fun, imagine replicating that play style on a mobile device that you can bring with you on the go! Pretty compelling, isn’t it? Unfortunately it looks like all good things must come to an end as the company being Tap Tap Revenge, Tapulous, has announced that they will be officially shutting the franchise down for good and will be pulled from the app store starting from today, and that the game’s servers will be closed at the beginning of February.

According to the company, the reason behind the closure is due to the ever-changing mobile and music markets, which the company believes no longer makes sense for them to maintain the game. The good news is that those who still have the game will be able to keep playing them, but take note that if you were to reset your phone and lose any songs you might have bought/downloaded, you will not be able to restore them. This shutdown will also apply to the Android version of the game, although we guess there will probably be places where you might be able to download the APKs if you were to search hard enough. So, anyone sad to see such a classic iOS game disappear?

AT&T Does Not Believe Their Sponsored Data Program Violates Net Neutrality

AT&T Does Not Believe Their Sponsored Data Program Violates Net NeutralityThe other day we reported that the FCC would be keeping an eye on AT&T’s brand new Sponsored Data program, and rightfully so. After all, for those who are hearing about it for the first time, to be able to sell data to companies to use for advertisement does walk the line of being a very clever idea and also violating net neutrality laws. However AT&T does not believe that their new Sponsored Data program violates any net neutrality laws. Instead the carrier claims that this move will only benefit consumers and that AT&T is not forcing any companies to pay for data if they choose not to.

In a statement made by Jim Cicconi, AT&T’s senior executive VP of Exteral and Legislative Affairs, “AT&T’s sponsored data service is aimed solely at benefiting our customers […] It allows any company who wishes to pay our customers’ costs for accessing that company’s content to do so. This is purely voluntary and non-exclusive. It is an offering by that company, not by AT&T.” However there are those who do not believe it is as simple as that. After all data costs money, which means that on top of advertising their products, companies will have added expenses of sponsoring the data used by customers, which in turn could be passed on down to consumers.

AT&T’s Sponsored Data program was announced not too long ago, and basically what it does is that it allows companies to sponsor a portion of data to consumers. For example if an advertisement requires the user to download a video, the bandwidth used by that download would be paid by the company and would not eat into your data allowance. Like we said this is a clever idea but it also raises the question of net neutrality. Who’s to say that regular data won’t be throttled to make sponsored data feel more efficient, and so on. What do you guys think?

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite Pictured Next To Galaxy Note 3

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite Pictured Next To Galaxy Note 3We have been hearing rumors about a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite for a while now, and while we cannot be certain when the handset will be launched, we expect that MWC 2014 which is next month will be a good candidate. That being said, thanks to a newly leaked photo obtained by the folks at SamMobile, we now know how the handset might look like, at least when compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, its bigger brother. For those hearing about the Galaxy Note 3 Lite for the first time, the device is expected to be a slightly smaller and slightly less powerful version of the Galaxy Note 3.

As you can see in the image above, the handset will come with a slightly smaller display at 5.55” versus the Note 3’s 5.7” display. Interestingly enough despite the handset supposedly being a cheaper version of the Note 3, recent rumors have suggested that the handset will come with a hexa-core chipset, the first of its kind, that will continue to rely on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, meaning that there will be two 1.7GHz cores and four 1.3GHz cores which will alternate depending on how much processing power is needed, ultimately saving battery life in the process.

The Galaxy Note 3 Lite is also rumored to feature S Pen support, 2GB of RAM, an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 3,100mAh battery, and a microSD card slot for additional storage. No word on which version of Android Samsung will choose to go with the Galaxy Note 3 Lite, but hopefully we will see Android 4.4 KitKat or newer.

WiFi-only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Could Be In The Works

WiFi only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Could Be In The WorksBack in 2013, Sony launched the Xperia Z Ultra, a smartphone that defied the conventions of how big a smartphone should be, especially since it launched with a whopping 6.44” display, which at that time made it the biggest smartphone around (it has since been overtaken by the Hisense X1 which comes with a 6.8” display). Given the device’s size, it would make for a pretty nifty tablet as well, wouldn’t it? Granted it is smaller than 7” tablets like the Nexus 7, but that also means that it is more portable as we have seen instances of people managing to slip the Xperia Z Ultra into their pockets, not something you see often when it comes to tablets.

This is why it is not a complete surprise to learn that Sony could be looking to release a media version of the Xperia Z Ultra, which is basically the same device minus any radio capabilities. This is thanks to AnTuTu benchmarks which shows off the device’s Snapdragon 800 processor without radios on board. Of course this does not confirm anything but the rumors of a WiFi-only version of the device has been floating around for a while now, and perhaps Sony might come forward with an announcement of sorts during MWC 2014 which is expected to take place next month. In the meantime what do you guys think? Would a $350 WiFi-only version of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra be of any interest to you?

T-Mobile Will Continue Selling BlackBerry Devices, But Only As Direct Shipping

T Mobile Will Continue Selling BlackBerry Devices, But Only As Direct ShippingAccording to our earlier report, T-Mobile appeared to have stopped selling BlackBerry devices. We had heard rumors that the carrier was planning to remove BlackBerry smartphones from their stores due to apparent low demand for them, and the lack of BlackBerry products on their website seemed to corroborate those rumors. Well the good news is that T-Mobile has not dropped support for BlackBerry devices entirely. Based on what a T-Mobile representative told the folks at CrackBerry, it seems that those looking to get a BlackBerry will have to ask for it specifically and that it will be shipped to them directly as opposed to being able to pick one up from their stores.

“T-Mobile continues to support the BlackBerry platform. Current T-Mobile customers can buy BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 devices online at https://my.t-mobile.com through Care and B2B sales channels. New customers can order the smartphones via direct ship at T-Mobile retail channels or through telesales. The T-Mobile retail channel has moved to fulfillment via direct ship for BlackBerry devices, rather than in-store inventory.” This also means that new customers who do not know about alternative platforms, such as BlackBerry, will basically not know that they have to ask for it specifically, which definitely does not seem to help BlackBerry at all. At least they still have AT&T, right?

Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Test Build Leaks Out

Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Test Build Leaks OutSamsung’s flagship smartphone, at least for the moment, is the Samsung Galaxy S4, so what better way to treat your flagship device than to introduce the latest version of the mobile operating system for it? We have received word that the Android 4.4 KitKat test build has already leaked out, where this particular test build has targeted the Samsung Galaxy S4. The leaked test build of the new firmware is meant for the GT-I9505 version of the Galaxy S4, which so happens to be the model that supports LTE connectivity, and with it, the main change where looks are concerned would be the status bar alongside its all-white icons. These tend to be in line with some of the recently published Google guidelines, while the green shade that Samsung had stuck to for so long to depict its battery icon has been dropped.

Apart from that, a new camera shortcut now appears on the lockscreen to make it faster for you to enter camera mode from a locked position, but apart from that, it is pretty much the same TouchWiz experience that many would have gotten used to since Android 4.3. This does throw some light on another matter though – the recently leaked TouchWiz design might only arrive with the next version of the Galaxy S handset, and not in this generation. Only time will tell.

Tizen Handsets Are Unlikely To Make Their Way To The US

Tizen Handsets Are Unlikely To Make Their Way To The USHave you ever considered picking up a Tizen-powered smartphone instead of the usual Android, iOS or Windows Phone “argument”? If you have answered in the affirmative, you might be pleased to hear that Samsung has had some interest in Tizen, but they aren’t finding it to be the easiest of tasks to make Tizen a success. After all, liking a product and looking forward to a general release is really different from actually taking the bold step to purchase it, especially when the market is already pretty crowded. Having said that, Tizen-powered smartphones might not actually make their way to the US market.

Ryan Bidan, Samsung Mobile’s director of product marketing for the US, did acknowledged recently in an interview that to introduce a new software platform such as Tizen in the US would prove to be a challenge. Right now, Samsung finds it difficult to see the US as a great test market for Tizen, and hence will not set themselves up for failure. What do you think of this viewpoint – does Tizen have what it takes to be a success in the US? Smartphones aren’t the only devices that can run Tizen, as tablets, TVs and in-car infotainment systems do, too.

Meizu MX3 Spotted Running On Ubuntu

Meizu MX3 Spotted Running On UbuntuFor those of you who have been looking forward to the regular Meizu MX3 roll out to the masses living in the US, you might be pleased to hear that this particular smartphone will arrive in the US later in the third quarter of the year. This particular model will run on the Flyme 3.0 custom Android user interface, but here we are with a snapshot of what looks to be the Meizu MX3 that will run on the Ubuntu operating system instead.

The photo that you see above hails from Meizu’s official account on Weibo.com, which is a Chinese social networking site that many have attributed it to be the “Twitter of China.” It was not too long ago when Canonical, the people behind Ubuntu, made an announcement concerning Ubuntu mobile OS making a move from being an aftermarket solution to a full-fledged mobile operating system. In fact, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth did also talk about a potential hardware partner that will deliver a smartphone with Ubuntu right from the get go without specifying the name of that handset. I guess the mystery’s solved now, with it being the Meizu MX3. The Meizu MX3 should have enough processing firepower underneath the hood to be able to handle any kind of Ubuntu heavy lifting.

Sony Could Develop Windows Phone Handsets In The Future

Sony Could Develop Windows Phone Handsets In The FutureI know of one particular saying that holds true in just about any and every situation – “Never say never.” After all, who knows what will happen in the future? Nobody has a crystal ball that can allow us to indulge the happenings a few years down the road, so it is always best not to burn your bridges unless there is no other way around a particular situation. Sony knows this too, and while they have been rolling out nothing but Android-powered smartphones, here we are with word that Sony is also talking to Microsoft concerning the possibility of introducing a Windows Phone smartphone sometime down the road.

Pierre Perron, the Sony Mobile head for Europe, shared, “We don’t want to be a single OS manufacturer.” That is what Sony has been where their smartphone range is concerned all this while, camping happily with Google’s Android, but who knows? There might be a Windows Phone smartphone down the road sooner than we think. After all, it is not as though Sony has not been working with Microsoft before, especially with their VAIO range of Windows-powered machines in the past. What do you think of Sony shifting some of their smartphone attention to Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform?

NTT DOCOMO “Confirms” Tizen Device Availability In March

NTT DOCOMO Confirms Tizen Device Availability In MarchAccording to Samsung, they believe Tizen is a “simple alternative” to Android. Odd choice of words given that Samsung’s success can largely be attributed to Google’s Android operating system, but we guess due to reports of Samsung looking to reduce their reliance on Google’s Android platform for the future, the South Korean tech giant will be looking to launch Tizen-based devices in the future to help offer an alternative.

Based on the rumors, Samsung’s first Tizen smartphones are expected to debut this February, and according to a new report from a Japanese magazine, Mainichi, Japanese carrier NTT DOCOMO has reportedly confirmed that Samsung’s Tizen devices will be available in March, presumably following their announcement in February.
