Confide Is The Snapchat For Business Users

We’re sure many of you guys have heard of Snapchat by now. If you haven’t, it’s basically an app that allows users to send photos to one another which are deleted automatically after a certain amount of time, making it the perfect app for sexting and for photos you’d rather not have seen by others. Well if you thought that making photos disappear after a short period of time was a good idea, what about disappearing text? That’s where an app called Confide comes in. Launched on Tuesday, some are calling this app the “Snapchat for professionals”, due to the apps ability to automatically delete text messages after they are read.

Sure, one could always manually delete messages and photos but what if you forgot? We guess this is where automation comes in. Put together by Jon Brod, a former AOL exec, and Howard Lerman, CEO of Yext, the duo are hoping that Confide will appeal to business executives who might want to discuss sensitive information, such as upcoming products or services, or financials, without the information being seen by others snooping around their phone. According to Lerman (via Businessweek), “Confide doesn’t store any messages on its servers, it doesn’t have the ability to retrieve them if a company, or the National Security Agency, comes knocking.”

Just like Snapchat, Confide has built in safety procedures preventing screenshots from being taken. Of course we expect that due to its secretive nature, the app will bound to find use outside of business circles. In the meantime to see how the app works, check out the video above.

Acer Chairman Dismisses Rumors Of HTC Merger

Acer Chairman Dismisses Rumors Of HTC MergerIt is no secret that HTC is not doing too well for itself at the moment. Not only is the company suffering financially, but on the legal front they are not having much luck either against the likes on Nokia whereby the Finnish company has successfully managed to obtain injunctions against several of HTC’s products in different parts of the world. That being said, what are HTC’s options? Sell themselves off to the highest bidder? Take themselves private like Dell did? Maybe merge with another company? All of these are possible scenarios although it seems that there have been rumors making their way around the internet which suggests that HTC could be looking to merge with another Taiwanese company, Acer.

Acer has a long history of producing computers, although it was only in the past couple of years did the company attempt to break into the mobile market with tablets and smartphones, so for them to acquire HTC who has a wealth of experience makes sense. Well as it turns out the rumors were just that, rumors, and that neither company will be merging, at least not for the foreseeable future. This rumor was dismissed by none other than Acer’s chairman, Stan Shih, who told the Taiwanese media that the company had no plans and no intentions of merging with HTC. Of course it is entirely possible for HTC to turn things around in 2014 with new products, so we guess we will just have to wait and see what the company has in store for us.

In the meantime what do you guys think? Will HTC be able tot turn things around for themselves in 2014? Or is the company headed downhill?

Samsung Responds To KNOX Security Concerns

Samsung Responds To KNOX Security ConcernsBack in 2013, security researchers discovered a vulnerability in Samsung’s KNOX security suite (Samsung’s answer to BlackBerry Balance), leaving many Samsung owners a little paranoid over privacy and safety concerns. Well the good news is that Samsung has finally managed to address the issue, and according to the South Korean tech giant, it seems that this is nothing to worry about. For those learning about the vulnerability in KNOX for the first time, it seems that hackers who know about the exploit will be able to monitor data communications and also access emails, which for some users could be costly as their emails might contain highly sensitive information.

According to Samsung, they claim that the “exploit uses legitimate Android network functions in an unintended way to intercept unencrypted network connections from/to applications on the mobile device.” Basically what they’re saying is that this is not an issue with KNOX or Android, but rather a  “Man in the middle” attack which Samsung’s KNOX will most definitely protect again. For the layman all the use of this technical jargon does seem a little confusing, but we guess what Samsung is trying to say is that KNOX users will not have anything to worry about as far as the security of their data is concerned.

Considering that government bodies like the Pentagon had approved the use of Galaxy devices as long as they had KNOX installed should also offer some measure of assurance of its security, right?

Microsoft Will Update All Windows Phone 8 Devices To The Latest Version

Microsoft Will Update All Windows Phone 8 Devices To The Latest VersionThere was a lot of controversy a couple of years ago when Microsoft revealed that Windows Phone 7 handsets would not be upgradable to Windows Phone 8. This was surprising given that for the most part, Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android updates were made available to all, if not the majority of devices out there. Well the good news is that Microsoft will not be making that mistake twice as the company has revealed that they will be updating all Windows Phone 8 handsets to the next Windows Phone update when it is expected to be made available in the spring of 2014. Microsoft has not set a firm release date yet, but we guess Windows Phone 8 users will be pleased to know they will not be left hanging.

This is according to a Microsoft official who spoke to the folks at Computer World. This also seems to echo Microsoft’s sentiments from back in 2013 that Windows Phone 8 devices will not be left in the lurch. Like we said given Microsoft’s move with Windows Phone 7, many were worried that they would repeat it with the next update, and there were rumors that Microsoft would be doing that as well, but we guess Windows Phone users can breathe a sign of relief. Of course we expect that there will be plenty of new Windows Phone 8 devices later this year, but for those who don’t plan on upgrading their handsets anytime soon, we guess this is good news.

    32GB Lumia 1520 Appears On AT&T’s Website

32GB Lumia 1520 Appears On AT&Ts WebsiteSo the other day we reported that the 32GB version of the Nokia Lumia 1520 would be made available on AT&T’s network on the 10th of January, and sure enough it has. If you thought maybe a default storage of 16GB was too little for your tastes, you can now head on over to AT&T’s website where you will be able to order the handset, which at the moment is priced at $249.99 on a new two-year contract. This is compared to the 16GB version of the Lumia 1520 which at the moment is still priced at $199.99 on contract.

It should be noted that the Lumia 1520 does come with expandable memory but we guess there are those who store a lot of movies and music on their phones and find that the default storage and microSD might not be enough. Users will be able to expand via microSD for an additional 64GB, meaning that if you were to get your hands on the 32GB version of the Lumia 1520, you should have a maximum storage of 96GB! That’s a lot of movies and music you will be able to keep on your device. Interestingly enough AT&T’s website lists the device as unavailable at the moment and might require the customer to go into a store to purchase.

This seems to contradict earlier rumors that suggested the phone will be only available online. Perhaps AT&T has yet to make it available, but the listing suggests that you should be able to purchase very soon.

Xiaomi Looks To Future With $50 Smartphones

Xiaomi Looks To Future With $50 SmartphonesThe folks over at Xiaomi has plans to double their smartphone sales this year, and just how are they going to achieve that particular target? Well, either you come up with a handset that is highly desirable that folks are willing to sell an arm and a leg to procure one, or to drop the entry price point to such insanely reasonable levels, that everyone would not mind picking one up even though they already own a decent smartphone to begin with. Xiaomi of China looks set to take the latter route, where they are touted to be working on a $50 smartphone that ought to be released sometime down the road.

I guess this $50 smartphone will be part of this year’s target of rolling out 40 million handsets, and to be able to own a handset that does not cost more than a tank of gas? That would be pretty cool to come up with. One of the target markets that Xiaomi is looking at would be Southeast Asia, where Hugo Barra, the former Android chief at Google who happens to be heading Xiaomi’s expansion efforts now sid, “I’m trying to find markets and get to them as quickly as possible.” Would you pick up a $50 handset just for fun since it is so cheap?

Motorola Throws In Free Chromecast With Moto X Purchase

Motorola Throws In Free Chromecast With Moto X PurchaseI am quite sure that many of us would like to get something free once in a while, as there is nothing quite like getting the most bang for your hard earned buck. Of course, a lot of it also depends on the seller, and Motorola must still carry the spirit of Christmas with them, as they are now offering the Chromecast dongle for free with every single Moto X smartphone that you decide to pick up. One ought to take note that the Chromecast had been left out of recent deals which Motorola did offer to the masses throughout the holiday season, but all of it has changed now.

There is a catch, however. In order to be eligible for this particular deal, you will first need to purchase your Moto X as an unlocked unit, which means you will have to pay the full price via Motorola. That would translate to forking out either $399 for the 16GB model Moto X, or $449 for the 32GB version of the Moto X. Needless to say, those who want to customize their device even more are able to do so, but if you are running short on cash, you can just stick to the tried and true black or white shades.

Google Play Services 4.1 Delivers Turn-Based Multiplayer Support

Google Play Services 4.1 Delivers Turn Based Multiplayer SupportIt seems to be the trend that some of the best software updates for Android tend to be part of either app updates or updates to the Google Play services framework, compared to the full system update for Android. Well, from today onward, Google has begun to introduce Google Play Services version 4.1, where those who apply this particular update would be able to enjoy the wonders of turn-based multiplayer support when it comes to games, among others.

With turn-based multiplayer, this would mean that game developers are now able to make use of Google Play services in order to deliver asynchronous multiplayer in games. In a nutshell, this would make Google function as the middleman when it comes to transferring turn data between players. This particular service will also add support for multiplayer games of anywhere between 2 to 8 players. Turn data will also be sent to Google and automatically routed to other players. Apart from that, there is also a developer preview of a new Google Drive API which is currently in the pipeline, where this particular API will enable any app to read and write Google Drive files, not to mention offer offline editing capabilities to boot. Do expect to see more advertising support in the Play services update as well, where DoubleClick for Publishers, DoubleClick Ad Exchange, and Search Ads for Mobile Apps are now part of the family.

@evleaks: Rose Gold Galaxy Note 3 Headed For Verizon

It was not too long ago when the Rose Gold color of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was made official. Well, @evleaks has tweeted that this particular Rose Gold version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be making its way over to Verizon Wireless, although there was no specific release date revealed for this particular device. It does seem as though this color could end up being in demand as various parts of the world ramps up for Valentine’s Day that is happening this coming February 14th. After all, with February 14th falling on a Friday this year, you can be sure that holiday resorts and hotels would most probably run out of rooms on that particular evening as couples take the opportunity to escape and celebrate their love for one another.

Instead of jewelry, how about giving a Rose Gold colored model of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3? You can, of course, throw in that customary box of chocolates into the mix if you want to, and KitKats would be extremely appropriate since this particular phable could very well arrive with the Android 4.4 KitKat build. Would the color of a particular device actually play a strong influence in your purchase decision?

    WiTricity Charges iPhone Sans Wires

[CES 2014] We have already moved on forward in a clear manner when it comes to wireless connectivity. Go to any decent restaurant or cafe, and apart from serving up good food, another prerequisite would be the presence of Wi-Fi connectivity. Well, wireless charging has yet to catch on in a big way at this point in time, but there are efforts being made to make sure that the tide changes in its favor. Take for instance, the video above that you can view. WiTricity has come up with a wireless charger for the Apple iPhone 5s as well as the older generation Apple iPhone 5, where this particular system will make use of magnetic resonance. This translates to the ability to juice up a particular device at a distance, and you do not need to have to line up the iPhone on a wireless charging pad, too. Should you decide to throw into the mix a wireless power repeater, you are then able to place the latter in your top drawer under your nightstand, and following that, any device that has been placed on that nightstand will recharge.

CES 2014 is the platform where this wireless pad from WiTricity is demonstrated, although it remains a reference design as at press time. There are plans to sell this particular pad in the months ahead for $99, while the case will retail for $49 a pop.
