T-Mobile To Purchase Spectrum From Verizon Wireless For $2.3 Billion

T Mobile To Purchase Spectrum From Verizon Wireless For $2.3 Billion

Rumors started circulating last year that Verizon Wireless was looking to offload its unused A-block spectrum, and T-Mobile U.S. was said to be interested. Big Red also said that it was open to spectrum swapping, which worked out in T-Mobile’s favor. It acquired the spectrum back in 2008 for $2.6 billion through a government auction. T-Mobile has officially announced today that it is purchasing 700MHz A-block spectrum from Verizon Wireless for $2.365 billion in cash and will be sweetening the deal with $950 million worth of AWS and PCS spectrum licenses.

When combined with T-Mobile’s existing A-block spectrum holdings in Boston, this deal gives the country’s fourth largest mobile carrier important low-band spectrum in 9 of the top 10 and 21 of the top 30 markets in the U.S. Both carriers expect to close the deal in mid-2014 after regulatory approval has been granted by the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission. The deal isn’t expected to hit any roadblocks when its being scrutinized by the regulators. Not only does Verizon get the cash, it will be able to use T-Mobile’s AWS airwaves to improve its service in various congested markets, such as New York. Seems like a win-win for both parties involved, which customers should experience improved service and coverage.

However LG soon clarified its intentions of taking the G Flex around the world. Today it has finally been confirmed that the smartphone will be launched on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. The company hasn’t unveiled what the price is going to be, it only revealed that the smartphone will be available from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in this quarter.

Prospective customers in the U.S. who have been waiting for this device will be pleased to know that it will come with the requisite LTE-bands for all the aforementioned carriers. Only recently press renders of the LG G Flex for multiple U.S. carriers were leaked, hinting towards an imminent announcement, which has now been made. Market Research Indicates Fall In iPhone Market Share

Market Research Indicates Fall In iPhone Market Share

The two new iPhones, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5S, which were released late last year might have bumped up Apple’s smartphone sales, but appears that even they could not stop the smartphone’s market share from falling down. Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has released the latest figures which indicate that in the three months ending November 2013, Apple’s smartphone market share dropped in almost all regions as compared to the same time back in 2012. On the other hand, both Android and Windows Phone market share grew during the same period. Apple is down almost 9.9 percent in the U.S. whereas Android and Windows Phone are up 8 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.

Windows Phone was able to perform particularly well in Europe where its now the third largest OS with over 10 percent of the market share, double than what it commanded just last year. Dominic Sunnebo, insight director at Kantar, said that despite strong sales of its new iPhones, Apple found it increasingly hard to post year-on-year market share gains due to “resurgent performances” by LG, Sony and Nokia. Japan is the only market where Apple closed out on top with over 69 percent of the smartphone market share. This doesn’t come as a surprise, given the fact that Japan is one of Apple’s fastest growing markets.

Audience eS700 Series Voice Processor For Always-Listening Smart Devices

Audience eS700 Series Voice Processor For Always Listening Smart Devices[CES 2014] With the arrival of devices like the Moto X, a new class of phones that are always keeping an ear out for their master’s next voice command was born. We are certain that this trend will continue, but it will amplify as devices get smarter to the point of anticipating the needs of their owners. We’re not quite there yet, but along the way, it is crucial to have voice processors that are able to provide a clear signal for both humans and machines to understand, while consuming as little power as possible when they continuously listen to their surroundings. This is a feat that very few companies can deliver, but that’s exactly what the Audience es700 Series architecture was designed to do. (more…)

    Alcatel OneTouch POP C9 Announced

Alcatel OneTouch POP C9 Announced[CES 2014] The folks over at Alcatel has revealed yet another smartphone that will join their ranks, where it will come in the form of the Alcatel OneTouch POP C9. This is the largest Android-powered smartphone from Alcatel at the moment where the POP series is concerned, with the smallest member of the family being the POP C1 that has a small 3.5” display, while the largest model is the POP C9 which carries a 5.5” display. All in all, Alcatel intends to offer large screen goodness alongside a quad-core processor without breaking the bank.

Just what can we find underneath the hood of the OneTouch POP C9? Well, for starters, this is a colorful plastic device that will arrive in a shade of colors (Bluish Black, Cherry Red, Full White, Hot Pink or Fresh Turquoise) and at first glance, we would not fault you for thinking that it looks a whole lot like the Samsung Galaxy S3. Yes sir, a generation and a half (since the Galaxy S5 is about to be unveiled later this year) behind in terms of looks, but I guess that is the “price” that you pay if you want the best bang for your buck. Forget about Full HD resolution here, as the POP C9’s 5.5” LCD IPS display has a resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. This results in a pixel density of just 200ppi. Other than that, you will find a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, an 8-megapixel camera at the back that does Full HD video recording, a 2-megapixel shooter up front, and a 2,500mAh battery. Sony Xperia Z1S Image Leaked

Sony Xperia Z1S Image LeakedWhen leaks happen of a particular device, it goes to show just one thing – that said device which was leaked would most probably be released, and not too long afterwards, of course. @evleaks has come up with yet another look of what could very well be revealed at CES this year, which is the Sony Xperia Z1S. This particular smartphone is also known as the Xperia Z1 mini in other circles, where it happens to be the compact version of its flagship device, which is the Sony Xperia Z1.

So far, official images of the Sony Xperia Z1S as well as camera samples, live photos and user interface screenshots have all been spotted. Heck, it has even gotten the positive nod of approval from the folks over at the FCC, which means it is about to hit the market really, really soon. Its most recent official release to the masses happened to be the one in the Land of the Rising Sun, where it was known as the Xperia Z1F. Well, @evleaks has shown off the official T-Mobile render, so no prizes for guessing just which mobile carrier it will arrive on. Needless to say, we await with bated breath on the official hardware specifications when the embargo breaks.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Rumored To Use Sharp’s LTPS LCD Displays Instead Of AMOLED

Samsung Galaxy S5 Rumored To Use Sharps LTPS LCD Displays Instead Of AMOLEDIf there’s one thing we can be pretty certain about, is that Samsung’s flagship products will typically use the South Korean company’s AMOLED displays. After all what better way to show off your own technology, right? Interestingly enough thanks a new rumor that has surfaced, it seems that with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5, word on the street has it that Samsung might turn to Sharp for their displays, as opposed to using their own AMOLED panels which is typically the case and more or less to be expected from them. This rumor comes from Tencent who claims that Sharp could be the one to provide Samsung with LTPS LCD displays.

So why turn to Sharp when Samsung can easily make their own display panels? Well as it turns out, Samsung is having a hard time manufacturing 2K AMOLED displays that were rumored to be part of the Galaxy S5, and also because the company is apparently trying to focus on bringing more flexible displays into the market, meaning that their efforts could be focused elsewhere. Given that Samsung has invested into Sharp, we guess Samsung could be taking advantage of their investment by getting Sharp to manufacture their displays for them. It is unclear how much of a difference Sharps’ LTPS LCD displays will compare to Samsung’s AMOLED, but we guess we will have to wait and find out, which will be at MWC 2014 if the rumors are to be believed.
