Qualcomm Ultra Sound NotePad Featured

[CES 2014] A stylus goes down pretty well with your smartphone or tablet, even more so if you are one who cannot bear the sight of fingerprints on your mobile device. Not only that, a stylus works a whole lot more accurately compared to your finger during those tense moments when you need to get the exact pixel touched or selected. Qualcomm, more famous for their mobile chips than anything else, has taken the plunge into a different world – by churning out a stylus which is able to play nice with a smartphone or tablet sans wires, using sound alone.

It sounds (pardon the pun) like magic, but in reality, it is actually plain old technology being put to good use. Known as the Qualcomm Ultra Sound NotePad, the demonstration video that you view above will depict just how a device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor as well as a set of special microphones are able to “listen” for vibrations which are made by a pen. Best of all is, this pen does not even need to touch the screen, but rather, to be near it. I admit, it will feel pretty weird at first since we are all infinitely more familiar with grasping a stylus as it dances across a touchscreen, but barriers are always meant to be broken. In a nutshell, you can now write notes, draw pictures, or doodle on a sheet of paper that is located next to your tablet, only to see it replicated digitally. This is still a proof-of-concept, and it might never make it to the real world. Only time will tell.

    Archos Helium Smartphones Unveiled

Archos Helium Smartphones Unveiled[CES 2014] Archos from France is still hanging tough in the extremely competitive smartphone market, and I clearly remember them for churning out some decent portable media players in the days before the iPod overtook all. Well, Archos also happened to be one of the first Android tablet manufacturers in the world, and they have now graced CES 2014 with a couple of smartphones from their Helium range. You will find that neither of these will be all hot air, where the Helium smartphones would make up part of Archos’ high end offerings.

Sony Sirius Smartphone Rumored To Make CES 2014 Debut

Sony Sirius Smartphone Rumored To Make CES 2014 DebutAt the end of last year right before we kissed 2013 goodbye and ushered in the lovely 2014, we did talk about how Sony might have made preparations to roll out a couple of new handsets (at the minimum, of course, this ain’t the mid 1990s any more) in 2014 with the Sony Sirius as well as Sony Canopus being lined up for an introduction. Here is additional information on the Sony Sirius that we talked about, with it being targeted to be a flagship device that should take over the likes of the Xperia Z Ultra.

Apparently, the Sony Sirius smartphone should come with a 5.2” smartphone display with 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution, running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset as well. Apart from that, other likely hardware specifications that should keep it ahead of the pack when it comes to its features would include 3GB RAM, a 20.7-megapixel camera at the back with their very own G lens, Android 4.4 KitKat as the mobile operating system of choice, and a 3,500mAh battery. Needless to say, this would mean that the Sony Sirius will be pretty pricey to begin with, and what better way to make a splash to the world’s consciousness than at CES which is all primed to kick off?

Caterpillar Cat B100 Rugged Phone Unveiled

Caterpillar Cat B100 Rugged Phone Unveiled[CES 2014] It is that time of the year again, and this time around, we have the Caterpillar Cat B100 introduced to the masses which will offer yet another option if you are in the market for a handset that is able to handle all the rough tumbles in life. Available immediately in Europe, the Caterpillar Cat B100 should also arrive in other markets some time in the first half of this year. Just to get a rough idea on how rugged this bad boy can be, here are some details to stoke your interest. The Caterpillar Cat B100 happens to be IP67 certified and comes with MIL 810G protection, where the former indicates that this handset is well protected against dust, and is more than capable of surviving on its own when immersed under water for up to 3 feet. Not only that, it should also be able to shrug off drops, extreme changes in temperature as well as additional accidents that might just spell the end of your average smartphone.

As for its hardware specifications, forget about a large display as the Caterpillar Cat B100 comes with a 2.2” 240 x 320 screen, running on a custom operating system. You will find a 3MP shooter on board, and a microSD memory card should be mandatory for any Caterpillar Cat B100 owner. A basic feature phone that can take all that life throws at it, but forget about using apps with this puppy.

Samsung Galaxy S5 And Galaxy Note 4 Concepts

Samsung Galaxy S5 And Galaxy Note 4 Concepts It has been “confirmed” not too long ago that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be making its way to MWC that is happening in Barcelona later next month. Well, having said that, it was also recently that Samsung has submitted yet another design patent which first saw light in August last year. Originally speculated to be the Samsung Galaxy Note 3’s design, it was no longer the case when the actual Galaxy Note 3 was introduced recently. Hence, what we see above could very well be the next generation of the Galaxy S series, which is the Samsung Galaxy S5, as well as the Galaxy Note 4 by extension.

What you see above happens to be the design based on the patent applications that were given some creative injection thanks to a certain Ivo Maric, having come up with such a concept. Similar to the sketches in the patent application, Maric’s smartphone or phablet would include a curved display on each side of the device. Just bear in mind that conceptual models would remain just that, a concept, until the real deal is released. All in all, we should expect the Galaxy S5 as well as the Galaxy Note 4 to be revealed to the masses later this year.

Bird Watchers Up In Arms Over Use Of Smartphone Apps

Bird Watchers Up In Arms Over Use Of Smartphone AppsDue to our smartphones essentially being tiny computers that we can easily slip into our pockets, it has led to a development of a variety of apps that can do just about anything, from splitting a bill and finding out the right amount to tip, to weird and novel games that have been designed to take advantage of our smartphone’s hardware. It has also led to a change in certain hobbies, such as bird watching, where there are apps designed to mimic the calls of certain birds in an attempt to lure them out so that we might photograph them or to better study their environment. Unfortunately these practices have not been well-received by avid bird watchers who feel that such methods are considered unethical.

In fact some scientists are worried that by artificially mimicking birds might have a negative effect on these creatures, where it might eventually condition these birds to stop responding which could lead to a loss of a potential mate, force them to leave their natural habitat, and could even unnecessarily attract a predator. Of course those who uses these apps claim that scientists have been doing it for decades which is a method known a “pishing”, a replication of a bird call. It’s actually interesting to see how a seemingly innocuous app could spark such a huge debate, and further shows how much technology is encroaching into nature. What do you guys think?

iPhone 5s Jailbreak Tweak Lets You Use Touch ID To Launch Apps

Apple’s Touch ID for the iPhone 5s was designed for security, although thanks to innovative developers, we’ve seen it used for other purposes, such as acting as a home button replacement. Now for those with a jailbroken iPhone 5s looking for an alternative use of Touch ID, you’re in luck as a couple of jailbreak tweaks will allow you to use Touch ID as a way to launch specific apps that you might not want random people to be able to access when they open your phone. These tweaks come in the form of AppLocker and BioProtect, both of which share similar functionalities in that they require the user to enter their fingerprint when attempting to open a specific app, say emails, or messages, or your photo gallery.

This is a great way for those who don’t really want to has a pass-coded lock screen, but want to have some protective measures installed for their privacy at the same time. Of course there are some concerns, such as where are the fingerprints being stored? With Apple’s own lock screen solution, the fingerprints are stored on a Secure Enclave of Apple’s A7 processor, meaning that no one should be able to read it.The developer of AppLock claims that the fingerprints are still secure and are stored in encrypted hashes that cannot be read or uploaded online, which hopefully is enough to assuage the fears of those concerned about their privacy and security.

Both AppLock and BioProtect can be found in Cydia and will require a jailbroken iPhone 5s, and given that these tweaks will rely on the Touch ID sensor, it’s safe to say that this will only work the iPhone 5s. In the meantime if you’d like to see the tweak in action, check out the video above which is a hands-on of the tweak put together by the folks at iDownloadBlog.

Future Nokia Phones Rumored To Sport Snapdragon 805 Chipsets With 2K Displays

Future Nokia Phones Rumored To Sport Snapdragon 805 Chipsets With 2K DisplaysFor a while it seemed that Windows Phone devices lagged behind Android in terms of hardware. While Android OEMs where busy putting out phones with quad-core processors and HD/Full HD displays, Windows Phone devices were still trudging along with dual-core chipsets and sometimes less than HD displays. To be fair the Windows Phone operating system never really needed such high-end specs as it had been optimized for its hardware, but on paper and in terms of marketing, it did not look good. Well if the rumors from Nokia Power User are any indication, 2014 could be where Nokia starts to catchup and maybe even out perform their Android and iPhone competition.

Based on a tip from one of their trusted sources, it would seem that 2014 is the year where Nokia could start introducing more quad-core powered devices courtesy of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor. Their source also claims that Nokia might make the jump to 2K displays, and even incorporate next-gen camera hardware that might sport 20-25MP sensors. Quad-core Nokia phones aren’t new, in fact they debuted last year with the Lumia 1520 which was also one of Nokia’s first Full HD devices. For Nokia to make the jump to 2K would definitely be a huge leap and does seem a tad sudden.

However based on what we know so far, there will be a few devices in 2014 to sport the revered 2K display, such as the Oppo Find 7, the Vivo Xplay 3S, and if the rumors are to be believed, even Samsung’s Galaxy S5 could sport a display with such high resolution as well. Of course rumors being rumors, do take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Do those rumored specs make Nokia’s Windows Phone devices more tempting?

    Typo Responds To BlackBerry’s Lawsuit

Typo Responds To BlackBerrys LawsuitTypo, the manufacturer of the Ryan Seacrest-funded iPhone keyboard case, has recently released a statement in response to BlackBerry’s intent to take legal action against them over the design of the keyboard.

According to the statement, “We are aware of the lawsuit that Blackberry filed today against Typo Products. Although we respect Blackberry and its intellectual property, we believe that Blackberry’s claims against Typo lack merit and we intend to defend the case vigorously.  We are excited about our innovative keyboard design, which is the culmination of years of development and research.  The Typo keyboard has garnered an overwhelmingly positive response from the public.  We are also looking forward to our product launch at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week and remain on track to begin shipping pre-orders at the end of January.” (more…)

Rudy Huyn Teases Unofficial Tinder App For Windows Phone

Rudy Huyn Teases Unofficial Tinder App For Windows PhoneWe’re sure many of you guys have heard of the dating app called Tinder. For those who haven’t, it’s basically an app that lets you scroll through profiles of the opposite/same sex, swiping right if you like them, swiping left if you don’t. What makes Tinder different from a majority of dating apps/services is that messages can only be sent if you and the other person have “liked” each other’s profiles, ultimately cutting down on unwanted messages from people you might not have interest in. The app is available on iOS and Android, but it looks like it will soon be making its way onto Windows Phone, albeit unofficially with the 6tindr name.

This is thanks to a post by its developer, Rudy Huyn, on Twitter where he showed off the app’s UI. According to Huyn’s post, it seems that the app is currently in development meaning that we might not be able to expect it soon, but at least we know that it’s on its way. For those wondering where and how have they heard that name before, it is because Huyn is a pretty famous developer in the Windows Phone community where he has released unofficial Windows Phone apps for services such as Snapchat, Instagram, and even Vine, gaining him a fair bit of recognition in the process.

In fact Huyn’s efforts, such as with his Wikipedia app, was so beautifully done that it even received the blessing of the Wikimedia Foundation in the process. Huyn has his own share of original work as well, although we guess his unofficial projects were the ones gaining him more attention. No word on when 6tindr will be out, but any Windows Phone users pleased by this? Or isTinder so 2013?
