Nokia Normandy’s Death Has Been “Greatly Exaggerated”

Nokia Normandys Death Has Been Greatly ExaggeratedWe have recently been seeing several leaks of the Nokia Normandy handset which is supposedly Nokia’s attempts at making an Android device. Back then it was rumored that the handset was merely an experiment by Nokia to see what they could build if they were attempting to make an Android device, and that it most likely will not be released anytime soon, especially in face of Microsoft’s acquisition of the company which is expected to close this year. After all with Microsoft promoting Windows Phone, the last thing they’ll want to do is promote a competitor’s product, right? Not to mention the various “Scroogled” campaigns Microsoft has been running as of late.

Well as it turns out perhaps Nokia could still be looking to release the handset because thanks to a tweet by the ever-reliable @evleaks, he wrote that, “The reports of Normandy’s death have been greatly exaggerated.” @evleaks has been known to get most of his leaks correct, save for a one or two misses along the road, but for the most part he has been pretty spot on. This also corroborates earlier rumors that Nokia has decided to put the Normandy up for release, even in face of the deal with Microsoft. Assuming this is true, there’s no telling when Nokia would make such an announcement, but what do you guys think? Would you be interested in a Nokia Android device?

Nokia Thinks HTC’s New Year Resolution Should Be To Stop Infringing On Patents

Nokia Thinks HTCs New Year Resolution Should Be To Stop Infringing On PatentsAs you might have heard, Nokia has recently won a series of legal battles against HTC in which several of HTC’s products have since been banned from being sold and had to be taken off the shelves of retailers. Nokia has never been shy about making jibes about their competitors, as we have seen in the past from several of Nokia’s advertisements, and this time it is no different. In a statement released by the Finnish company over their latest win in Germany, Nokia was pretty much all business about how they were pleased with the results of the courts which basically ruled in their favor, only to end with a humored jab at HTC, stating, “HTC’s first New Year’s resolution for 2014 should be to stop this free riding and compete fairly in the market.”

Over the past couple of months and years, we have seen huge tech companies battle it out against one another in the courtrooms. The notable is probably the Apple vs. Samsung case which is still ongoing. We had also recently heard how Google had filed a complaint against the Rockstar patent consortium (owned by companies such as Apple and Microsoft) essentially likening them to the patent trolls that we have seen in the past. Will 2014 be any different in terms of legal battles? We doubt it, if anything the competition is just getting stiffer and we would be surprised if it were anything less.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo Could Be The Retail Name Of The Galaxy Grand Lite

Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo Could Be The Retail Name Of The Galaxy Grand LiteA couple of days ago we reported that a certain Samsung Galaxy Grand Lite had passed through the FCC. We have been hearing about this rumored handset for a while now, with the device speculated to be the slightly less powerful version of the Galaxy Grand 2 that was launched in South Korea. Well now according to new reports, we are hearing that the Galaxy Grand Lite could actually be known as the Galaxy Grand Neo upon its official release. Granted the Galaxy Grand Lite name was only speculated and for all we know it could have been a codename, or maybe Samsung wanted to jazz it up a bit, who knows?

In any case the specs of the Galaxy Grand Neo appear to be the same as what we have been hearing from before, so it looks like the only changes made are to its name, for now. As a quick recap for those who might have forgotten, the rumored specs of the upcoming handset includes a 5” 480×800 display along with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. It will also be accompanied by 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, and a 2,100mAh battery. Not the most powerful specs but we can also assume it will not be breaking the bank anytime soon. Still no word on a launch date but with CES 2014 around the corner, perhaps we will learn more then.

Snapchat Hacked: 4.6 Million User Names And Phone Numbers Stolen

Snapchat Hacked: 4.6 Million User Names And Phone Numbers StolenOne of the perks of Snapchat is how the media you send over gets deleted after a short period of time, meaning that you can rest assured that anything private you send will not be permanent. Unfortunately it seems that it was recently that Snapchat has experienced a security breach whereby they have managed to get ahold of Snapchat’s 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers and have posted it as a downloadable database a few days ago, although at this time of posting the website appears to have been suspended. Ironically enough Snapchat was alerted to several exploits by a security group called Gibson Security, but released a statement in which they claimed to have safeguards in place.

As it stands the hackers have blurred out the last two digits of each user’s phone number and have indicated that they might be willing to turn the data over to the right party, although it seems that their motives were just to let raise public awareness. According to the anonymous group of hackers, “Our motivation behind the release was to raise the public awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure on Snapchat to get this exploit fixed. It is understandable that tech startups have limited resources but security and privacy should not be a secondary goal. Security matters as much as user experience does. The company was too reluctant at patching the exploit until they knew it was too late and companies that we trust with our information should be more careful when dealing with it.”

Verizon Moto G To Be Sold By Best Buy For $100 Off Contract

Verizon has already confirmed that it going to offer the Moto G smartphone to its prepaid customers in 2014, but so far it hasn’t revealed any more than that. Big Red hasn’t revealed what it intends to charge for this smartphone. A photo of the Verizon Moto G was leaked recently which hinted at a $100 price tag. The price tag is surprising to say the least, because the Moto G is sold off contract and its regular price tag is already very competitively priced at $179. More information has emerged about the Verizon Moto G, with Best Buy spokesman Jonathan Sandler telling The L.A. Times that the phone is currently landing in the retailer’s stores and it will go on sale “as soon as it arrives.”

At a $100 price tag the Moto G will be an excellent option for someone looking to find a decent smartphone with decent specifications without having to sign a conventional service contract with any U.S. carrier. The Moto G has a 4.5 inch HD display, a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 8GB of onboard storage and an 8 megapixel rear camera. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is pre-installed on the Moto G. Verizon is yet to make an announcement about its variant of the Moto G.

Samsung Rumored To Increase OLED Panel Production Capacity By 33% In 2014

Samsung Rumored To Increase OLED Panel Production Capacity By 33% In 2014

There might be strong demand for TFT LCD technology in the market right now, but apparently Samsung is of the view that OLED will continue to tout the advantages of its technology in the market despite rising demand for TFT LCD technology. The latest from Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes suggests that Samsung Display is going to increase the OLED panel production capacity by 33 percent in 2014. Market observers cited in the report believe that the OLED market is going to be worth upwards of $450 million in 2014, up nearly $100 million from $350 million in 2014.

The report also claims that Samsung is planning to extend the use of OLED panels in its smartphones and TV, this might be true after all. It was reported a few weeks back that the company wants to bring back OLED tablets. Samsung is rumored to launch multiple OLED tablets in 2014, with display size as large as 10.5 inches. Market observers still expect demand for OLED TVs to be weak in the new year, they hold the view that Ultra HD LCD TVs will take charge of the high-end TV market instead. The 33 percent increase in OLED panel production capacity is expected to increase output from 140,000 substrates in Q4, 2013 to 177,000 substrates in Q4, 2014.

Apple Says It Has ‘Never Worked With The NSA’ On An iPhone Backdoor

Apple Says It Has Never Worked With The NSA On An iPhone Backdoor

Recently a barrage of highly confidential documents were leaked online which revealed that the NSA has backdoors that it can implement in products from a number of major technology companies, including but not limited to Samsung, Cisco and Juniper Networks. Then word broke about a backdoor called DROPOUTJEEP which apparently lets the NSA tap into an iPhone. In a statement provided to AllThingsD, Cupertino says that it has ”never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone.” The company also claims that it has been unaware of this NSA program that is supposedly targeting its smartphone, one of the most popular mobile devices on this planet.

For those who don’t know what DROPOUTJEEP does, its basically a software which when installed on an iPhone provides signal intelligence. This would enable the agency to retrieve files or even push files to the iPhone, extract text messages, emails, contact lists, find out the iPhone’s location and even turn on the camera and microphone. This isn’t the first time that Apple has been named in leaked NSA documents, the company was also named in the PRISM documents leaked by Edward Snowden. Apple reiterates its commitment to “defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who’s behind them.”

Sony Expected To Launch Windows Phone Smartphone In 2014

Sony Expected To Launch Windows Phone Smartphone In 2014

Sony is known for its Android powered smartphones, and it released a number of devices in 2013 that received rave reviews. The company hasn’t said anything about its smartphone plans for 2014 but rumor has it that Sony might release a Windows Phone powered smartphone in 2014. The device is expected around mid-2014, no technical specifications have been leaked as yet.

This rumor comes from The Information which claims to have heard from a person that has knowledge of Sony’s plans. It also claims that in order to bring more manufacturers on board, Microsoft is reaching out to potential OEMs and even thinking of cutting licensing costs to sweeten the deal. Sony’s entrance in the Windows Phone market might serve the platform well as it looks to increase its global market share to close up to Android and iOS, the company has only made Android devices for quite some time now. With Nokia’s hardware business almost under its belt, Microsoft effectively bought the largest WP vendor, a deal that was rumored have caused concerns for other OEMs that currently manufacture WP devices. However the company clearly wants to keep working with other OEMs as well, China’s ZTE and India’s XOLO have already hopped onboard to develop their own WP smartphones which will also be released in 2014.

LG G2 Android 4.4 Update Apparently Rolled Out To A Fraction Of Owners In Korea

LG G2 Android 4.4 Update Apparently Rolled Out To A Fraction Of Owners In Korea

We recently reported that LG Korea had started to roll out the much awaited Android 4.4 KitKat update for its flagship smartphone in Korea. It appears that the company might have been conducting a soak test. Usually OEMs conduct soak tests with volunteers, they seed the update to a few people in order to be absolutely sure that there aren’t any issues with the update. Reports coming in from Korea suggest that the Android 4.4 update was only rolled out to five percent of all G2 owners in the country.

It is claimed that LG found no bug after the limited roll out of this update and that it has now given the go ahead to start releasing Android 4.4 KitKat for the remaining G2 owners in the country. There have been some reports from those who received the update that they’re noticing battery and browser problems on their devices, but the issues don’t appear to be plaguing everyone who received said update. LG Korea is expected to start releasing Android 4.4 to all G2 owners in Korea from next week. It is still not known when the company plans to finally release the hotly anticipated update in other major markets such as the U.S., certainly G2 owners Stateside would be itching to get their hands on some chocolatey goodness.

Samsung’s Metal Smartphone Rumored To Launch With Galaxy S5

Samsungs Metal Smartphone Rumored To Launch With Galaxy S5

Time and again it has been rumored that Samsung is working on a smartphone that will tout a metal body. Initially it was believed that the Galaxy S5 will have a metal body, but rumor has it that Samsung is going to stick with plastic this time around as well. It is believed that the company is developing a premium line of smartphones under the Galaxy F branding which will feature a metal build. As per the latest reports coming in from Korea, it is likely that the company might launch two smartphones together in 2014, the Galaxy S5 as well as the premium Galaxy F smartphone.

There’s obviously no confirmation from Samsung at this point in time, so these rumors should still be taken with a grain of salt. It is claimed that Samsung expanded its manufacturing operations to Vietnam just to build metal smartphones, which is why some believe none of the company’s usual partners are involved in this project. It isn’t known when the Galaxy S5 is due, rumor has it that the smartphone might be released earlier than originally planned. This is certainly not the last time we will be hearing about Samsung’s metal smartphone, but right now its too soon to be absolutely sure that its on the cards for 2014.
