Research Finds That Freemium Apps Account For 98% Of Play Store Revenue

Research Finds That Freemium Apps Account For 98% Of Play Store RevenueEverybody loves free stuff, but would you love it as much if there were ads splattered all across it? Or if you had to fork out more money to progress in a free app like a game? There are some, like myself, who would happily pay full price for an app and leave it at that, but it seems that we might be a minority because according to the latest figures, it would seem as though freemium apps are currently dominating the Google Play store, with a whopping 98% of revenue coming from freemium apps alone. The remaining two percent go to paid apps, and paid apps with in-app purchases.

The numbers shared are worldwide as well and it appears that South Korea is currently leading the way as far as freemium apps are concerned. For those wondering what freemium apps are, they are basically apps that are free for download, but in order to unlock certain features or to remove the apps, the developers are asking users to pay a small fee. These in-app purchases can sometimes lead to the user spending more money on the app than they normally would had the app been a one-off purchase, which is why we suppose developers love the freemium model.

Companies like EA have expressed their belief that freemium is the way of the future, but companies like Nintendo have in past stated that they have no interest in freemium games whatsoever. However with analysts predicting that freemium games could rack up as much as $10 million a day, we can certainly see the lure. What do you guys think? Are you pro-freemium or wold you rather pay a one-time fee and be done with it?

    iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 Jailbreak Now Available

iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 Jailbreak Now AvailableYesterday we reported that a jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 and 6.1.4 would be coming soon and sure enough it has. It looks like iH8sn0w worked pretty fast as the jailbreak is currently available to download by hitting up the jailbreak’s website. As we had mentioned earlier, the jailbreak appears to be limited to those running on Mac OS X at the moment, but according to its website, the Windows version of the jailbreak should be coming soon, although no word on when that will be, so if you’re running on Windows, you’ll have to find someone with a Mac if you want to jailbreak your iOS device.

You might be asking, why would anyone jailbreak an older build of iOS, right? Well not everyone is a fan of iOS 7. The new look has been criticized as being too bright, and in some instances, cartoony. In fact some criticisms have taken it to the next level with users complaining that the parallax effect in iOS 7 has given them motion sickness, which is why there are still those out there who refuse to update to iOS 7, but still have to have the latest jailbroken iOS 6 running on their devices. As it stands an untethered jailbreak for iOS 7 has recently been released as well, so for those running on either iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 or iOS 7, you guys have some options.

Fitbit For iOS Updated With Support For M7 Coprocessor

Fitbit For iOS Updated With Support For M7 CoprocessorFitness enthusiasts probably rely on some accessories or apps which they use to track their progress, whether it be how long they’ve run for, how many calories they have burnt, or how many steps they’ve taken, there’s an app or accessory for that. The good news for Fitbit users is that if you were hoping for similar functionality that was introduced with the Nike+ Move and Runkeeper, you’re in luck as the app has been recently updated that has not only tweaked the app’s user interface a little, but has also introduced a new MobileTrack feature that takes advantage of Apple’s new M7 motion coprocessor in the iPhone 5s.

The new MobileTrack feature allows the app to track the user’s steps, distance, and calories burnt and will be a feature that will work only on the iPhone 5s, at least that’s what the company claims. However given that the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini also sport the M7 coprocessor, we don’t see why the app can’t work with those devices as well, although we guess it’s not very convenient to carry a tablet with you while you run. In any case the app itself is free for download so if you own the iPhone 5s and would like to take it for a spin, hit up the iTunes App Store for the download.

Microsoft Patent Hints At Possible 3D Mobile User Interface

Microsoft Patent Hints At Possible 3D Mobile User InterfaceThe tiled interface of Windows Phone and Windows 8 was an interesting choice by Microsoft. It was definitely a departure from the typical rows and columns of icons we might normally associate with smartphone or desktop operating systems and was a fresh new look. Unfortunately early users of the interface found it confusing, at least compared to older versions of Windows, which has since prompted Microsoft to reintroduce the Start button in its Windows 8 update, but what about Windows Phone? Is Microsoft planning on revamping the operating system anytime soon? According to a patent filing, it seems that Microsoft might have something new planned, or have at the very least toyed with the idea.

The patent describes what appears to be a new user interface for Microsoft’s operating system in which it takes advantage of a 3D look. As you can see in the diagram before, it removes the need for pages in which users swipe through to access different apps and features, but instead makes use of a 3D block that spins around where the icons are located on each side. It’s an interesting concept and given that it is a patent, there’s really no telling if Microsoft has any plans to actually implement them, but what do you guys think? Is the Windows Phone interface starting to get a bit old and do you think it’s about time it has gotten a visual overhaul?

Nokia Accounts For 92.1% Of Windows Phone Install Base

Nokia Accounts For 92.1% Of Windows Phone Install BaseA few years ago when Nokia announced that they would adopt the Windows Phone platform, many were incredulous and mocked them. After all Android was the best choice for the Finnish company given the reach and market share Android had compared to Windows Phone, but we suppose it sort of worked out for Nokia in the end. Not only did they managed to do well enough for Microsoft to acquire them, but it seems that Nokia has managed to make themselves the de facto brand when it comes to Windows Phone handsets.

This is according to the latest figures from AdDuplex which was revealed that Nokia is still leading Windows Phone 8 sales and now accounts for more than 92% of the Windows Phone 8 install base. This is based on information gathered from over 5,000 applications that uses AdDuplex’s services, so while it might be comprehensive, it might not necessarily tell the whole story. AdDuplex goes on to confirm the dominance of a particular Windows Phone handset, which is of the Nokia Lumia 52x family where the Lumia 520 and Lumia 521 account for 43.5% of the Windows Phone 8 install base.

It will be sad to see the Nokia brand go as far as phones are concerned once Microsoft acquires them, but hopefully Microsoft will be able to pick up where Nokia left off and take them to new heights.

Mugger In Central Park Hands Back Victim’s Flip Phone

Mugger In Central Park Hands Back Victims Flip Phone

They say that beggars can’t be choosers, but the saying doesn’t apply to muggers. A gun-toting mugger in Central Park, New York, accosted 25 year old Kevin Cook, of Brooklyn, when he was walking with his friend near the West Drive in the 60s at around 12:30 a.m. Threatening to kill Cook, the mugger and his accomplice wanted his phone, which he handed over. The mugger was disappointed because his victim was carrying an old flip phone, “Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, ‘What the [f-] is this?’ and gave it back to me,” Cook told the New York Post.

The mugger probably handed it back because he thought the old flip phone wouldn’t fetch enough money to go through the trouble of fencing it. Cook believes that this incident is “kind of humorous.” You can definitely look at it this way, given how easy it is to find someone with an expensive smartphone these days, even muggers’ standards have gone up. That aside, this is the 13th reported robbery to take place in Central Park this year, exactly the same as last year. Both the mugger and his accomplice were able to flee before the police could catch up with them.

Purported First-Gen iPhone Prototype Sold Online For $1,500

Purported First Gen iPhone Prototype Sold Online For $1,500

Back in 2007, Apple unveiled a product that transformed the global smartphone market. It was the first iPhone, announced by the late Steve Jobs himself, which went on to perform marvellously in the global market. Subsequent iPhones built on the success of the first-generation smartphone. That device was iconic, to say that least. Recently a purported pre-production prototype of the first generation iPhone was listed on eBay by a seller based in Australia. The unit ended up being sold for $1,500.

Nokia Lumia 635 ‘Moneypenny’ Screenshot Hints At 4G Support

Nokia Lumia 635 Moneypenny Screenshot Hints At 4G Support

Earlier this year in November codenames of a handful of Nokia devices were leaked. It was rumored that the company was working on all of those devices and that it is expected to release those devices over the next couple of months, presumably before the acquisition of its devices and services business by Microsoft closes. One such device is believed to have the “Moneypenny” codename. A purported screenshot of this device reveals that it might have 4G LTE support and a minimum of 1GB RAM.

One can clearly see the 4G logo in this screenshot, which would serve as an indicator that the Lumia 635 is able to connect to LTE networks. Given that a tile for the Asphalt 8 game is seen in the screenshot, it is likely that the 635 will have 1GB of RAM due to the fact that this game hasn’t been optimized for WP devices with 512MB RAM as yet. Recently another screenshot of the rumored Moneypenny Lumia device was leaked, it showed off dual-SIM support. Nokia hasn’t confirmed anything about this devices as yet. Both of these screenshots were leaked on Twitter by serial leaker @evleaks, who has a solid track record when it comes to leaking information about unreleased devices.

BlackBerry And Foxconn’s First Device Won’t Have A Keyboard [Rumor]

BlackBerry And Foxconns First Device Wont Have A Keyboard [Rumor]

If there’s one thing BlackBerry is known for, its the keyboards on its mobile devices. There was a time when BlackBerry smartphones with full QWERTY keyboards ruled the world, but then trends changed and the company didn’t evolve with them, so it ended up losing significant market share. Nevertheless, there are diehard BB users out there who would prefer a Q10 over a Z10 any given day, most of them would never want the company to completely give up on QWERTY keyboards. While that might not happen anytime soon, it appears that BB’s latest plan to kickstart the success of its hardware business might make use of fewer physical keys.

The company recently announced that it has teamed up with Foxconn to develop low-end devices geared towards emerging markets, where BB still enjoys popularity and where its keyboards are one of the biggest selling point. BGR claims to have heard that the first device to come out of this agreement, codenamed Jakarta, won’t have a physical keyboard. Instead it is said to tout a full touchscreen and run on BlackBerry 10 OS, which could mean that the Canadian manufacturer might finally be phasing out OS7. No additional details have been leaked about this device, perhaps we might hear more over the coming weeks. BlackBerry will continue to manufacture high-end devices, and its highly likely that one of them will definitely have a full QWERTY keyboard.

Samsung Reportedly Developing New LPDDR4 RAM Chip, Could Debut In Galaxy S5

Samsung Reportedly Developing New LPDDR4 RAM Chip, Could Debut In Galaxy S5In the computing world, more RAM isn’t a bad since it allows your computer to run smoother. However when it comes to mobile phones, while more RAM can’t hurt, is it truly necessary? It would seem as though our smartphones these days are catching up in terms of hardware to computers and if the reports are to be believed, there is a chance that Samsung’s Galaxy S5 could feature a whopping 4GB of RAM as part of its hardware. According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung is expected to begin production of its 8Gb LPDDR4 chip sometime in 2014, which has led to speculation that if the production could be completed on time, there is a good chance it could debut in the Galaxy S5.

As it stands we have been hearing a lot of rumors regarding the Samsung Galaxy S5 these days. Last we heard Samsung could adopt a 5.25” QHD display and also a metal body which is a nice change of pace from the plastic material Samsung typically favors. Samsung has also recently teased a possible Exynos announcement for CES 2014, which some believe could be about a new 64-bit Exynos chipset which would compete with the likes of Apple’s own 64-bit chipset, the A7. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Is 4GB of RAM really necessary in our smartphones these days? Or do you feel like it might be overkill?
