Xiaomi Mi3 With WCDMA Support Arriving 31st December

Xiaomi Mi3 With WCDMA Support Arriving 31st DecemberA few months ago, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi3 Android smartphone which made it the first smartphone in the world to feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 chipset. That in itself was pretty cool but unfortunately at that time, the launch of the handset with the Tegra 4 chipset also meant that the device could only place nicely on China’s TD-SCDMA networks, essentially meaning that if you lived outside of China, well you’d be out of luck if you were hoping to hook onto a 3G network, but if 2G or less is fine, then by all means go for it! However for those who are slightly more patient, you might be pleased to learn that Xiaomi will be launching a WCDMA version of their Mi3 handset on the 31st of December, New Year’s Eve.

This support means that the handset will be compatible with China Unicom’s 3G network as well as 3G networks in other countries. Perhaps not all, but most would be a safe assumption. This means that if you liked what you saw in the handset, you can rest assured knowing that if you were to import it after the 31st of December, you will be able to use it on your carrier’s 3G network. This also means that Xiaomi had to made some hardware changes and will see the device powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chipset instead, but the rest of its specs, such as its 5” Full HD display, 2GB of RAM, 13MP rear-facing camera, and its 3,050mAh battery should remain the same.

Jailbreak For iOS 6.1.3 And 6.1.4 Coming Soon

It was just the other day that the untethered jailbreak for iOS 7 was released which is great news for those running on iOS 7 at the moment. Unfortunately despite Jony Ive’s attempts at remaking iOS and giving it a fresh new look, not everyone is appreciative of his efforts, with some calling it cartoony and too bright, and we have even heard reports of how the parallax effect is actually causing motion sickness. In fact we won’t be surprised if some actually preferred the skeumorphic look of iOS 6 and the good news is that if you wanted to downgrade to iOS 6 and still have a jailbroken iPhone, you’re in luck as hacker iH8sn0w has revealed that a jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 and 6.1.4 is on its way.

There’s no telling when the jailbreak will be released, but presumably it will be soon, or at the very least it is progressing along nicely, thanks to a video (above) released by iH8sn0w which shows the jailbreak running on a fifth-generation iPod touch. Unfortunately iH8sn0w thinks that his jailbreak tool will most likely be a Mac-only release, meaning that those running on PCs might not be able to enjoy the fruits of his labor and might have to find someone with a Mac if they wish to jailbreak their phone, but we suppose it really depends on how badly you want to revert back to iOS 6. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more information regarding the jailbreak’s release, so check back with us later for more updates.

Nokia Lumia 920 Reportedly Jailbroken By Chinese Hackers

When it comes to hacking our phones, Android and iOS are quite popular either by rooting or jailbreaking, and while there are options out there for Windows Phone users, it is not as commonplace, but who knows, perhaps down the line Windows Phone could get popular enough where hearing about an upcoming jailbreak could be worth looking forward to! In any case if you’re the proud owner of a Nokia Lumia 920 and you were looking for a way to jailbreak your device, you’re sort of in luck as a group of Chinese hackers have recently posted a video in which they claim to have jailbroken the handset.

As it stands the aim of this jailbreak is to create a Cydia-like store, except for Windows Phone, in which apps that might not necessarily be approved by Microsoft will be able to be downloaded and purchased. This does not necessarily encourage piracy but as we have seen in the past for iOS and Android, piracy of apps is inevitable so we guess it’s up to the curators to help keep it in check. The hackers have not posted a guide yet on how to jailbreak the Lumia 920, but the video above certainly shows some evidence that a jailbreak has been achieved. We might see a guide released later but for now, you can check out the video above for more details.

Lumia 520/521 Account For 30% Of All Windows Phone Devices Around The Globe

Lumia 520/521 Account For 30% Of All Windows Phone Devices Around The Globe

As Nokia gears up to hand off its Lumia brand to Microsoft, one must look back and see what the Finnish manufacturer was able to do right. Time and again it has been reported that the low cost Windows Phone devices, Lumia 520 and Lumia 521, have proved to be major hits. Latest data from Ad Duplex reiterates that, with both variants accounting for 30 percent of all Windows Phone devices being used around the globe. In the U.S., the Lumia 520 has overtaken the Lumia 920 as the second most used Windows Phone device. Of the entire Windows Phone market in the U.S., the Lumia 520/521 command 30 percent.

The popularity of T-Mobile branded Lumia 521 has propelled the carrier ahead of AT&T as it now has the second most Windows Phone devices on a U.S. carrier. The future of these devices in the country is uncertain. While Nokia has launched the Lumia 525 which has roughly the same specifications as these two devices but comes with twice the RAM at 1GB, which makes it compatible with latest content on the Windows Phone Store. So far Nokia hasn’t said if it plans to release the Lumia 525 in the U.S. Nokia’s high-end smartphones still struggle in the market, with the new flagship Lumia 1520 down at 16th and Lumia 1020 at 12th on the list of most used Windows Phone handsets. The low cost strategy seems to have worked wonders for Nokia, the question is, will Microsoft go down the same road once it assumes control of the brand and of Nokia’s hardware business?

China May Use Microsoft-Nokia Deal As Leverage To Get Lower Patent Licensing Fees

China May Use Microsoft Nokia Deal As Leverage To Get Lower Patent Licensing Fees

Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services division hasn’t hit any major roadblocks. The deal sailed through Nokia’s shareholders meeting and it wasn’t held up by EU and U.S. regulatory bodies. There might be some trouble brewing in China though, which initially launched a probe into the deal. Just last week the country’s Ministry of Commerce launched another probe apparently after antitrust concerns was launched by local vendors. Rumor has it that China may require Microsoft and Nokia to lower their licensing fees before it approves the deal.

Nokia has sold its hardware business, but it hasn’t sold its patents to Microsoft. Technically speaking, both companies don’t have a joined patent portfolio. Nokia itself holds more than 7,000 patents and just last year it filed infringement complaints against ViewSonic, HTC and BlackBerry. Sources who spoke to Digitimes claim that while Nokia has been “reluctant” to file infringement complaints against local vendors in China, it may seek fees once it hands off the hardware division to Microsoft, presumably at the end of the first quarter of 2014. They claim that local vendors want the ministry to “force” both companies to make certain “concessions,” with regards to the licensing fees before the deal is approved, as they fear Nokia might file complaints against them as their global brand recognition grows.

HTC And LG Expected To Use Sapphire In Next Year’s Flagship Smartphones

HTC And LG Expected To Use Sapphire In Next Years Flagship Smartphones

This year we saw the trend of fingerprint scanners in smartphones pick up. It was rumored for months that the iPhone 5s would come with a fingerprint scanner, and it did. Then the HTC One Max was unveiled, which also had a similar scanner, albeit on the back. Even Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 was rumored to have it, but that didn’t pan out. Rumor has it that a number of flagship smartphones in 2014 will come with fingerprint scanner and the folks at Digitimes are hearing from “industry sources” that both HTC and LG are planning to use sapphire for home buttons of 2014 flagship devices.

Apparently the HTC One 2 and the LG G3 will come with sapphire home buttons, thus allowing both manufacturers to bundle fingerprint scanners. It has already been rumored that LG’s 2014 flagship is going to have the scanner. HTC already released one device touting said scanner this year, it seems likely that the company will introduce it into next year’s flagship as well. Both smartphones, the HTC One 2 and the LG G3, are expected to be launched earlier than originally planned in 2014. So far the companies haven’t confirmed anything about their smartphone plans for next year, perhaps things might be a bit more clear around the time when the Mobile World Congress is about to kick off.

Asus CES 2014 Teaser Hints At Handful Of New Smartphones

We’re just one week away from the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014, which takes place in the first week of January in Las Vegas. It is the biggest show of its kind with a wide variety of exhibitors showing off the latest technology which will be all the rage next year. Some companies have already started teasing the announcements that they are going to make, Asus is one of them. The company has released its second CES 2014 teaser today, this one hints that Asus might announce a handful of new smartphones at the event.

Titled “What’s Your Number,” the setting is Taipei, Taiwan where balls fall from the sky. Each ball has a number printed on it, either four, five or six. This could be a subtle hint that Asus is going to announce smartphones with the aforementioned screen sizes. Apart from this, no further hints have been given, so we’ll have to wait until CES 2014 to find out for sure. Asus released its first CES 2014 teaser last week, which contained subtle hints towards a hybrid device that would perhaps be able to run both Android and Windows. That particular device is expected to be a tablet, but obviously, nothing is confirmed at this point in time.

LG L Series II Receives Popular ‘Knock’ Feature Next Month

LG L Series II Receives Popular Knock Feature Next Month

LG announced today in Korea that its popular “Knock” feature, which was initially known as KnockON, is going to be standard in all key mobile devices in the future. The company also revealed that its L Series II smartphones are going to receive this feature sometime next month. The Knock feature debuted with LG G2, it allows users to turn the smartphone on and off by simply knocking twice on the display. Its a handy feature on the G2, considering the fact that its power button is located on the back. Knock for L Series II users will be rolled out through a global maintenance update in January, 2014.

The Korean manufacturer also introduced this feature in its G Pad 8.3 tablet. Its curved smartphone, the G Flex, also came with this feature because it too has the power button on the back. The company says that customer response to this feature was so positive that they made a version of Knock for the L Series II. Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics’ Mobile Communications Company, said that “Knock is distinctively an LG UX,” and that the company’s engineers found a way to improve the home button by turning the entire screen into one.

HTC Infographic Details Lengthy Process Of An Android Update

HTC Infographic Details Lengthy Process Of An Android Update

Whenever Google pushes out a new Android update, Nexus devices are always the front in line to receive said update. Android users that own devices manufactured by a plethora of other OEMs receive the update at a later date, whereas significant delays are involved if that device happens to be locked to a carrier. This often leads to customers venting about the inavailability of the update. HTC has published an infographic on its website which details exactly how an Android update is readied before it is ultimately pushed out to the end users.

Basically there are three kinds of Android devices, the unlocked or developer edition devices, carrier locked devices and Google Play Edition devices. GPE devices offer the “Nexus” experience, meaning that they are next in line after actual Nexus devices when an Android update is released. For carrier locked or unlocked devices a lot of complicated steps are involved which includes back and forth of code from Google to OEMs to carriers. A slight hiccup at any one step can result into a substantial delay, which can definitely aggravate anxious customers. The infographic is definitely a good read for all those who have wondered just how the entire Android update process works, since the relatively slow roll out of latest updates often tend to be one of the biggest issues that people have with Google’s mobile platform.

Encrypted Messaging Service Cryptocat’s iPhone App Rejected

Encrypted Messaging Service Cryptocats iPhone App Rejected

Earlier this year a fellow called Edward Snowden made some earth shattering revelations about the various electronic spying programs of the NSA. The leaked documents listed a number of globally recognized companies such as Apple, Google and Yahoo, though the companies initially denied having any knowledge of the agency’s programs. Interest in encrypted messaging services surged after these revelations, which is when Cryptocat’s popularity reached new heights. iPhone users waiting for an app should give up on waiting, Apple has rejected Cryptocat’s app for its smartphones.

Cryptocat is popular due to its ease of use, it simply lets two users exchange messages using end-to-end encryption. Nadim Kobeissi, who developed the app, was quite vocal on Twitter against Apple’s decision to reject the app. Since he’s bound to a non-disclosure agreement which is part and parcel of the Apple developer program, he can’t go into details as to why the app was not approved, but he believes that the reasons he was given were “illegitimate.” However, it is interesting to note that Cryptocat is available for download from the Mac App Store, which has similar guidelines for developers as the iOS App Store. So perhaps it really doesn’t have to do with Apple’s reluctance in approving Cryptocat for iPhone, perhaps it really has found something during the approval process which has compelled it enough to stop it from being listed on the App Store. Kobeissi, on the other hand, is “seriously considering lawyering up.”
