BlackBerry Q20 Will Be Officially Known As The BlackBerry Classic

BlackBerry Q20 Will Be Officially Known As The BlackBerry ClassicDuring MWC 2014, BlackBerry unveiled two handsets, the BlackBerry Z3 and the BlackBerry Q20. Given the way BlackBerry has been naming their handsets, we guess we’re all pretty much used to referring to them by their name and model number, but apparently for the BlackBerry Q20, BlackBerry’s CEO John Chen decided to remind everyone that the handset will actually be named as the BlackBerry Classic.

Now Chen has tossed that name around for a while but everyone had assumed that “Classic” was just a codename for it, like how the BlackBerry Z3 is known as Jakarta, and how we have also come across devices codenamed “Kopi”, “Cafe”, and “Cyclone”. The folks at N4BB have since confirmed this with BlackBerry who has confirmed that the Classic name is here to stay.

In fact we can’t say we’re too surprised especially given how Chen has lauded the handset, claiming that it will appeal to BlackBerry loyalists and old-school fans who appreciated the way BlackBerry has designed their handsets in the past. Based on what we know so far, especially since there haven’t been any photos, the BlackBerry Classic will feature an integrated trackpad and a tool belt of buttons, similar to what they have done in the past with devices like the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

This definitely sounds like an old-school BlackBerry handset, albeit with BlackBerry 10 running under the hood. We’re not sure if this is the direction that BlackBerry should be heading, but perhaps in a world full of touchscreen smartphones, perhaps a little old-school is needed. The BlackBerry Classic is expected to launch in the fall of 2014, so we guess we will have to wait until then to see how well-receive it is. In the meantime what do you guys make of the BlackBerry Classic moniker, yay or nay?

Only PureView And High-End Nokia Handsets To Get Dedicated Camera Button [Rumor]

Only PureView And High End Nokia Handsets To Get Dedicated Camera Button [Rumor]Dedicated camera buttons on smartphones can be handy and can result in more stable images compared to having to press the on-screen shutter button. It also makes the camera feel more “natural” since a physical shutter button and the way it’s held is more familiar, at least for those who have been using cameras for a long time.

Now if there’s one thing that you’ve probably noticed is that Nokia seems to have done away with the need for a dedicated camera button, at least one some of its newer devices. Apparently this is because they are planning on reserving that hardware feature for its higher-end handsets and for future PureView smartphones as well.

This is according to the folks at Gadgethelpline who recently stopped by the Microsoft and Nokia booth at the Gadget Show Live in UK. According to them, “The Power and Volume controls on the right side of the device are the only controls situated on the case, with Nokia telling us that the lack of a dedicated camera button is now a feature of low end handsets, with only the higher ranged Nokia Pureview cameras coming with a dedicated button.”

We’re not sure why Nokia might decide to do this, perhaps it could that they want their high-end phones to stand out more from the lineup, who knows? In the meantime what do you guys think? Are you a little bummed that this feature may no longer show up in low-mid ranged Nokia Lumia devices?

France Offers Phone Contract Via Vending Machines

France Offers Phone Contract Via Vending MachinesAh, France, the land where your boss is no longer allowed to contact you by email once you have clocked out from the office. Of course, a whole lot of that remains as theory, as enforcing it is going to be a whole lot trickier than expected. While Japan is the country with the highest number of vending machines per capita, this does not mean that other countries, too, are able to have some of the more unique vending machines to serve the masses. Take France for example – Operator Free Mobile, famous for their extremely cheap phone contracts, will enable one to pick up a contract from a vending machine kiosk in a matter of minutes.

Such a machine will follow up your registration by spitting out a mini-, micro- or nano-SIM card that has already been activated, where all you need to do then is to place it into an unlocked phone and you’re good to go. Of course, this is not the first SIM card vending machine in the world, but it happens to be a unique one simply by the fact that it offers an all-inclusive, ready-to-go package from a major mobile carrier. That ought to count for something, no?

Kolibree First Electrical Connected Toothbrush on Kickstarter

Kolibree First Electrical Connected Toothbrush on Kickstarter
The Kolibree electrical connected toothbrush got a lot of traction at CES and today, the company launched its Kickstarter campaign with pre-orders available to the public.

The device features Bluetooth connectivity, sonic technology, an 8-axis accelerometer, a magnetometer, and a gyroscope. The companion application will show people how to brush their teeth more efficiently and will record their brushing sessions to show their progress in a user-friendly mobile dashboard.

Kolibree is also providing an API that will allow developers to create compelling games to motivate kids (and adults) to brush their teeth better, and turn a chore into a fun experience. See below two screenshots of future games, please note that we did not see any gaming demo.

Similar products have been spotted recently, such as the Oral-B electrical connected brush developed by giant Procter & Gamble, however the device I saw at MWC does not feature the same 3 sensors except for a pressure sensor, and no word was shared on the future plan to build a gaming ecosystem. Most recently, I met with Grush co-founder who showed me a prototype of a non-electrical connected toothbrush with an early stage demo of 3D games. Grush will be available for pre-order in 2015.

On Kickstarters the first 500 funders will be offered a Kolibree toothbrush for only $99, with a price point of $129 for the next 1,000 supporters. For only $149,  backers will be able to choose from a rnage fo nice colors: Feather White, Dove Gray, Berry Blue or Cerise Pink.

The development kit is available for $199 with beta access to API. The dentists can buy an educational software package for $299.

Google Expands Security Services For Android

Google Expands Security Services For AndroidIf you happen to be in possession of an Android-powered device that is capable of accessing the Google Play Store by default, then here is some good news for you in terms of security, where it ought to be able to give you a greater peace of mind, too. It does seem as though Google’s Android mobile operating system is about to be even more resistant to malware, and the best part of it all is, you do not have much to do in the first place. In the past, whenever you were about to install an app that hailed from questionable sources, a red flag will come into play, but this time around Google has improved things by a whole lot to have Android check up on your apps after installation.

The reason behind this is simple – it is entirely plausible (and human) for anyone to download apps of questionable quality and content prior to Google’s verification feature going live in 2012. This translates to a wayward app sneaking its way through, and as Google continues in their quest to learn more concerning mobile malware, they would be able to start cleaning up the mess of yesteryears automatically. Android Security Engineer Rich Cannings did admit that majority of Android users will not receive such a notification that they have a wayward app on-board, but at least we have a greater peace of mind now, considering how devices that still have Android 2.3 running on them will be able to gain that security feature.

Firefox OS 2.0 Begins To Take Shape

Firefox OS 2.0 Begins To Take ShapeIt does seem as though the appearance and features of Mozilla’s modernized mobile OS, Firefox 2.0, have started to make its way to news channels as it continues its trek to being fully realized. Among the new features in this mobile operating system would include copy and paste, a new and improved lock screen, find-my-phone tools, as well as a spanking a new app switching mechanism. Will Firefox 2.0 be able to cause a dent in the Android-iOS duopoly? Only time will be able to tell, but for now, let us revel in the fact that there is another challenger on the scene.

LG Odin Processor Expected To Enter Mass Production ‘Soon’

LG Odin Processor Expected To Enter Mass Production Soon

For long it has been rumored that LG is working on its own system-on-a-chip a.k.a SoC based on ARM architectures. A few months back it even got a name, Odin. Its believed to feature a big.LITTLE configuration with four 2.2Ghz Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.7GHz Cortex A7. Apparently based on the 28nm manufacturing process, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is reportedly going to handle production. Latest rumor suggests that the LG Odin process might be entering into the mass production stage “soon.”

Despite rumors that the homegrown SoC is expected to enter mass production in the near future, rumor has it that LG won’t be using it in its next flagship. Since most of its rivals have now come out with their flagships, all eyes are on LG to see what it comes up with in the G3. LG hasn’t confirmed which chips its going to opt for as far as its next flagship smartphone is concerned.

The delay in Odin’s mass production is attributed to LG facing issues with final design. It is now believed that the company will first test the waters with its new chip in low-end smartphones, and that it doesn’t want to take such a big risk with its 2014 flagship. LG Odin powered smartphones might show up in the market in the second half of this year.

Research Shows High Interest In iPhone 6 Due To Larger Display Rumors

Research Shows High Interest In iPhone 6 Due To Larger Display Rumors

Last month ChangeWave polled more than 4,000 people, who were asked if they would be willing purchase the next iPhone, a.k.a iPhone 6. The findings show that there is already high interest for Apple’s next generation smartphone, which is expected to debut in fall 2014. 14 percent respondents said that they are very likely to purchase it, while 26 percent responded they were somewhat likely.

This 40 percent together shows that there is significant buying interest than there was for Apple’s previous iPhones. ChangeWave conducted a similar poll in March 2013 when rumors about two iPhones being launched were circulating wildly. Back then only 26 percent respondents said they were likely to pick up the new iPhone, despite the fact that even at that time there were rumors about larger displays.

But the rumors seem to make sense now, given the fact that Apple decided to stick with the same size for yet another generation of iPhones. Many Wall Street analysts are now of the view that if Apple doesn’t want iPhone sales to fall flat it is going to have to adopt larger displays. This is presumably why people are now more likely to believe that iPhone 6 is going to follow current market trends, which evidently lean towards large displays.

ChangeWave’s parent company, 451 Research, said that “speculation over a larger screen iPhone is clearly striking a chord with consumers,” and that it is the highest level of demand for an unannounced iPhone ChangeWave has ever seen in its survey.

    ‘Selfie’ Gets Body Image Warning

Selfie Gets Body Image WarningI am quite sure that at one point or another in your life, you would have most probably snapped a photo of yourself, where it is otherwise known as a selfie, getting into trouble every now and then. Now, selfies are fine and dandy when it is just you, but try not to ruffle feathers by posing with your country’s leader next to you. Researchers at the University of Strathclyde, Ohio University and University of Iowa surveyed 881 female college students in the US, where the ladies were asked to answer some questions concerning their Facebook usage pattern, exercise as well as eating regimes, and one’s body image. Basically, the research suggests that if you spend plenty of time on Facebook to ogle and your friends’ photos, it has a high tendency of letting the ladies feel insecure about how they look like in the eyes of others.
