Verizon T-Mobile Spectrum Deal Reportedly Being Finalized

Verizon T Mobile Spectrum Deal Reportedly Being Finalized

Recently there have been a lot of rumors circulating that Verizon is looking to sell its unwanted A-block spectrum to T-Mobile U.S., the fourth largest mobile carrier in the country. The Big Red has already said that it is open to spectrum swapping, and according to a new report by Bloomberg, that’s what’s likely to happen. It is reported that the deal might be announced as early as next week as the final details are in the process of being hammered out. As a result, T-Mobile will get its hand on frequencies that cover almost 150 million people in the country. Verizon will get cash and spectrum in markets where it needs the most.

BTIG analyst Walt Piecyk believes that Verizon is probably going to want $3 billion for the spectrum, which is acquired back in 2008 through a government auction for $2.6 billion. Such a deal would require approval from the FCC, and once the deal goes through, T-Mobile will get access to low-band frequencies that its network is currently missing. As a result of the swap, Verizon will be able to use T-Mobile’s AWS airwaves to improve its service in congested markets like New York. Spokespersons for both carriers have declined to comment on this particular report, so we’ll have to wait until next week to find out if both Verizon and T-Mobile have reached an agreement.

Verizon Droid MAXX Available For $12.49 On Contract

Verizon Droid MAXX Available For $12.49 On Contract

Sharing the same specifications as the Droid Ultra, Motorola launched the Droid MAXX earlier this year. It has a 5 inch Super AMOLED 1,280x720p display, 10 megapixel rear camera, a 1.7GHz dualcore processor coupled with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. The biggest selling point of this smartphone is its massive 3,500mAh battery which according to the company is good for 48 hours of use after a single charge. If all this has enticed you to pick one up, Amazon is the way to go as the retailer is offering it for $12.49 with a two year contract.

There’s a caveat though to this deal. Only those subscribers who are willing to sign a new two year contract with Verizon will be able to purchase the Droid MAXX for $12.49 up front. Existing Verizon subscribers who want to upgrade their device will have to pay $99.99. Customers who don’t want to get attached to a service plan have the option to pay the entire cost up front, off contract the Droid MAXX costs $679.99 from Amazon. If you really are enticed by the discounted price and have made up your mind to purchase the smartphone, it would serve your own interest to check out our review of the Motorola Droid MAXX, we have paid special attention to the battery life claims.

Google Removes Hidden Feature In Android Through Version 4.4.2 Update

Google Removes Hidden Feature In Android Through Version 4.4.2 Update

Earlier this year in July it was discovered that Android 4.3 had a hidden feature called App Ops. Through the feature users could tap in to permissions granted to apps that run on the device, something which they can’t do by default. While many users would argue about giving users the ability to control individual app permissions, Google is yet to officially launch such a feature. In its recent Android update, version 4.4.2 KitKat which was released shortly after Android 4.4.1 graced devices, Google has now removed the App Ops feature.

Google says that App Ops is an “experimental” feature that wasn’t meant to be public, the company claims that it could break app functionality, which is why users must not be given access to it. Google hasn’t said if it has any plans in the future of launching this feature, so it wouldn’t be right to assume that somewhere along the line App Ops could come back. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is of the view that Google should re-enable the feature, and that it should add a switch to restrain apps from collecting identifying information such as IMEI, user account information and phone number, it should better integrate App Ops in Android and that it should allow users to disable network access on a per app basis.

Verizon Galaxy S4 Mini Now Supports Galaxy Gear

Verizon Galaxy S4 Mini Now Supports Galaxy Gear

Earlier this year when Samsung released the Galaxy Gear smartwatch only a handful of the company’s devices were able to support it. Since then an update has been rolled out which widens the net, allowing more and more people to hook up their $299 smartwatch with their Samsung devices. Support is only limited to the company’s own devices, so its not like anyone with an Android device from another OEM can take advantage of the smartwatch. Galaxy S4 Mini owners on Verizon are in luck as the Big Red has rolled out an update which brings support for the wearable device.

Apart from that, Big Red also claims that the update is going to improve the performance of the Galaxy S4 Mini. A number of issues have also been resolved and exchange email server connectivity, Verizon 4G LTE connectivity, Isis Mobile wallet and Google Voice prompt timing have all been improved. The update also comes with a handsome amount of bloatware, apps that the carrier bundles with the update itself. Verizon’s MyInfoZone Widget, Verizon Cloud, and VMWare are baked into this update. The update is going to be rolled out over-the-air, that too in stages. So if hasn’t popped up on your Galaxy S4 Mini right now, don’t worry as you will definitely be receiving a notification soon.

Galaxy S4 And HTC One Google Play Edition Receive Android 4.4.2 Update

Galaxy S4 And HTC One Google Play Edition Receive Android 4.4.2 Update

Google rolled out the Android 4.4.2 update recently shortly after it had rolled out Android 4.4.1 for Nexus devices. Updates such as these are first rolled out for Nexus devices before they gradually make their way to devices manufactured by other OEMs. The benefit of owning a Google Play Edition device is that you’re much higher up the list, meaning that updates are rolled out for these variants soon after the Nexus devices have received their fix. The first two GPE smartphones released earlier this year, the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, have both received the latest release of KitKat, Android 4.4.2.

These incremental updates don’t bring any major features, however they do fix various bugs, including device specific bugs. Furthermore, a SMS related security exploit that was discovered recently has also been patched in Android 4.4.2. The updates have started rolling out over-the-air for both Google Play Edition smartphones, alternatively, users can download the firmware files from Google and flash their devices manually. Just recently a couple of new GPE devices were released, including the first ever GPE LG G Pad 8.3 tablet and a similar edition of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra. Both of these devices, the smartphone and the tablet, come with Android 4.4 KitKat preinstalled.

Verizon HTC One Android 4.3 Update Approved

Verizon HTC One Android 4.3 Update Approved

Verizon, the largest mobile carrier in the U.S., was actually the last major carrier to offer the HTC One. Ultimately, the Taiwanese manufacturer’s flagship smartphone was launched on the Big Red, finally allowing its existing and prospective subscribers to pick one up. Those who did would no doubt be waiting for the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update to drop. It was revealed recently that the update will take quite a bit of time to be released, so users could do nothing but sit around and wait. The good news is that the wait is almost over. Executive Director, Product Management At HTC has revealed via Twitter that the company has received technical approval from Verizon for the HTC One Android 4.3 update.

The update is going to bring a number of new features, including the Sense 5.0 user interface. Once Verizon updates the support documents, only then it will be fully revealed exactly what this update brings for Big Red’s variant of the smartphone. Over-the-air roll out of Verizon HTC One Android 4.3 update is pegged for early next week, so its really just a matter of days now before users are finally able to get their hands on the update. Once they do, the long wait for Android 4.4 KitKat to drop will officially begin.

NSA Could Decode Private Cellphone Conversations

NSA Could Decode Private Cellphone ConversationsThe NSA is definitely not in the good books of many people, even to the point where tech companies have already begun to sound the bell that calls for reforms in the organization itself. I am quite sure that even more people would be upset to read about what the NSA is capable of doing when it comes to our cellphone conversations. Apparently, their phone surveillance efforts do more than just focus on metadata instead of associated calls, but they are also able to eavesdrop on what is being shared by two people without those holding the conversation knowing any better. Yes sir, your complains about that aunt or uncle you absolutely cannot stand, can be gossip fodder for the NSA. Don’t you think that this is way too creepy?

The Washington Post received documents leaked by Edward Snowden which confirms that the NSA has the ability to decode GSM-based cellphone calls, without having to have the encryption keys in the first place. The NSA, in its defense, claims that this is a necessary move, considering how either side of the law rely on encryption in order to secure sensitive information. In the future, however, the NSA might not have such an easy ride in eavesdropping on conversations as and when they like, especially when the likes of AT&T and T-Mobile Germany among other carriers around the world are taking the step to introduce more secure encryption methods for their GSM service, not to mention with 3G calls already being a whole lot more secure. It is not foolproof, but at least it makes them sweat more to know what we’re talking about eventually.

Sony Xperia E2 With LTE Rolling Out In 2014 (Rumor)

Sony Xperia E2 With LTE Rolling Out In 2014 (Rumor)Sony has a brand new Xperia E2 smartphone that they intend to roll out sometime next year, and from the name of the device itself, it is a no-brainer that this particular smartphone will continue from where the Sony Xperia E left off. Needless to say, this particular model will come with upgraded features, which is a given, and one of the more noticeable improvements would be the inclusion of LTE connectivity, at least according to the folks over at EMSOne. Other than having LTE connectivity in the mix, do not expect it to come with a slew of high end specifications, especially when you take into consideration its predecessor that sports a 3.5” HVGA display, so we do not have too high hopes for the Xperia E2.

It does seem that the year 2014 is starting to shape up to offer more and more affordable smartphones that come with built-in LTE connectivity, and mobile carriers do seem to be the biggest winners if this is the case. After all, as more folks gain access to faster Internet on-the-go, logic dictates that revenue should go up, right? Considering how Google has more or less worked to make Android 4.4 KitKat run on decent hardware without having it reside on the high end spectrum, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the Xperia E2, too, will come loaded with it at launch.

Google Maps Navigation (Beta) For Android Arrives At Another 25 Countries

Google Maps Navigation (Beta) For Android Arrives At Another 25 CountriesHas the traveling and adventure bug bitten you yet this holiday season? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you might also want to make sure that you do not get lost – not to mention the rest of the folks who are depending on your leadership as much as your sense of direction. Fret not, you might be unable to fold a map to save your life, which is why Google Maps Navigation comes in handy. Google Maps Navigation has now made its way in another 25 more countries, where majority of these new additions lie in the continent of Africa, and would include Libya, Somalia and Tunisia.

As for the remaining coverage area that has also received the benefit of Google Maps Navigation, they would include Guadeloupe and Haiti from the Caribbean, with those who have a soft spot for Europe giving Andorra, Croatia and Serbia a go. Other rather more remote places than normal would include Bhutan and Vanuatu, and those are not excluded from the (soon to be) all-knowing Google Maps Navigation. Just bear in mind that if you want to get Google Maps Navigation (Beta) for Android up and running, you would need at least Android 1.5 and Google Maps for Android version 3.2 and higher.

Motorola Touchless Control App Update Unlocks Your Phone With But A Spoken Word

Motorola Touchless Control App Update Unlocks Your Phone With But A Spoken WordThey say that a spoken word can be extremely powerful, although it is also understood that a curse which has no place will not fall on anyone. Some people follow the school of thought of speaking things into reality, but why not let technology ensure that this happens every time, all the time? Motorola has recently introduced a new update to its Touchless Control app over on Google Play, which would ensure that your smartphone will be more versatile even when it is in a locked state, as extra Google Now commands should now be able to jive with your smartphone when it is idle and locked.

You will be able to unlock your PIN simply by speaking it out, and Touchless Control will do all the rest. A new tone is also introduced when you say “OK Google Now.” Apparently, this particular update does seem to be made available only to devices that have Android 4.4 KitKat as the operating system of choice, which pretty much rules out the recent DROID family, at least until Motorola and Verizon do something to remedy that situation soon. Speaking out your PIN is fine and dandy by me, but it seems to be a function that is worth using only in private, coming in most handy when you drive and need to concentrate on the road.
