Slingplayer Windows 8 App Costs $15 After Free Trial Run Period

Slingplayer Windows 8 App Costs $15 After Free Trial Run PeriodAs far as we can remember, the release of Windows 8 (and of course, Windows 8.1 after that) has seen requests made by Slingbox customers for an app which will also be able to play nice on Windows 8 devices, and those will include a plethora of tablets, convertibles, laptops and desktop machines. Well, I suppose the gods of tech have heard you, since Sling Media recently announced that the SlingPlayer for Windows 8 app will be made available to interested parties over in the Windows 8 App Store.

As long as you own a Windows 8-powered tablet, convertible or PC, installing this app would let you use it for free, albeit with a time limit of 24 hours, tops. Once that time limit is up, you will have to make a decision as to whether to pick up the app for good at $14.99 a pop, or to just turn your back and wistfully hope that the price will be reduced one fine day down the road. Just for reference’s sake, $14.99 would be the same price as that of the other versions of the SlingPlayer app. Some of the new features that will arrive with the Slingplayer Windows 8 app include Gallery View, a touch-enabled User Interface as well as Windows RT support. Skype For Android 4.5 Rolls Out

Skype For Android 4.5 Rolls OutJust the other day, we read about how Microsoft rolled out a Skype for Windows Phone 8 update to the masses, and this time around, we have a little bit of something for Android device owners who cannot help but sneak in some Skype goodness into their everyday routine. We are looking at Skype for Android version 4.5 now, where there will be a couple of totally new features which will cater for Android tablet owners, in addition to general improvements across the board.

Skype happens to be the first Android application that will be able to deliver a picture in picture window, letting you check out your video call never mind the fact that you have already switched away to other applications. I guess some might say that this is an experience which would not be too different from Windows 8′s Snap View, albeit it comes with a touch of Android this time around, letting you multitask even when you are attending to a Skype video call. While this feature is available only on tablets, those using Skype 4.5 on your Android smartphone will still be able to catch out a message that performs a permission request to draw on top of other apps. Other bug fixes and quality improvements in Skype 4.5 would include better Video Instant Messaging functionality, compatibility for the Hudl tablet, crash issues on the Nexus 5 would be no more, as well as persistent drop down filter selections on the people tab. [Press Release]

Evernote For iOS Updated, Now Able To Scan Business Cards And Save As ContactsFor users who prefer keeping digital copies of notes, receipts, and the likes, chances are you might have heard of the app called Evernote which does exactly that, while syncing across a range of devices meaning that you will have access to them anytime and anywhere. Well the good news for business people who collect tons of business cards, you might be pleased to learn that Evernote has recently issued an update for its iOS app in which it will now allow users to scan business cards and converts them into a digital contact.

The app will rely on your iOS’ camera and will convert the data it scans from the cards into an editable contact card. Unfortunately it seems that this feature will only be available for Evernote Premium subscribers, so if you’re a regular Evernote user, you’d be out of luck. Apart from being able to store the card as a digital contact, it will also be able to pull additional data from social networks, allowing you to add more details to the contact, such as photo, email address, and etc. It will also allow users to automatically send an email to your new contact with your information, which can be pretty handy when you might not have your business card on your person.

India Courts Allows Nokia To Transfer Chennai Factory Assets To Microsoft

India Courts Allows Nokia To Transfer Chennai Factory Assets To MicrosoftWhile the Microsoft-Nokia deal has been largely approved by shareholders and regulators, there are still a couple of obstacles left in its path, such as the issue with the Indian government who claims that Nokia owes them taxes. Nokia has since offered the courts $369 million to unfreeze it assets, and it looks like the courts have decided to take Nokia up on their offer by allowing Nokia to finally sell its Chennai manufacturing unit to Microsoft, thus allowing the acquisition to proceed as per normal. Had the courts not accepted Nokia’s offer, the company would have been forced to exclude the factory from the deal, which could throw a wrench into the proceedings.

In any case it looks like everything is back on track for now, but Nokia is said to still owe the country of India around $3.4 billion in taxes, which includes penalties for non-payment of tax and interest. Nokia is currently contesting the amount, but if they lose, that’s the amount that the Finnish company would have to pay. It’s definitely not a small amount and it has been reported that Nokia’s shares actually took a 2% dive as the outcome of the case remained an uncertainty.

Cover Lock Screen App For Android Now Available For Download

Cover Lock Screen App For Android Now Available For DownloadWe spend a lot of time tinkering away on our smartphones, when in reality perhaps our smartphones should be working for us. We’ve seen attempts by developers to create smarter apps, such as IFTTT for the iPhone, and Chameleon launcher for Android devices, and now looking to help users create a more seamless user experience, the Cover lock screen app has been launched in open beta. The app has been around for a while now, but previously it was limited to a closed beta where not everyone could download the app just yet.

However for those who are interested in creating a smarter smartphone for themselves, the app is available as a public beta via the Google Play store. For those unfamiliar with Cover, it’s basically a lock screen app that tries to provide you with the best apps at the right time all from the lock screen itself. For example it will be able to detect when you are in the car and prepare apps such as Google Maps, TomTom, and etc. However when it detects that you might be at work or school, productivity apps such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Evernote, and etc. would be available.

As it stands the app is a free for download, so if you’re wondering what the fuss is all about, hit up the Google Play store for the details.

Batman Tumbler iPhone Case Comes With Built-In LED Projector

Batman Tumbler iPhone Case Comes With Built In LED ProjectorWhile the Batmobile might be one of the more classic vehicles of super heroes, Christopher Nolan’s take on the Batman franchise as raised interest in the Tumbler vehicle which was used by Batman in the movie as opposed to the more classic Batmobile. We have seen various interpretations of the Tumbler, like in the form of a golf cart, but if you’re looking for something a little more affordable and pocket friendly, how about a Tumbler case for your iPhone?

As you can see in the image above, this is a Tumbler case for the iPhone and at least from the top-down view, one would not even think that it was an iPhone case, but rather a model of the Tumbler itself. The case is currently being sold by Bandai, although given its Japanese website, we’re not sure if those living outside of Japan will be able to get their hands on it. Other features of the case, apart from the ability to deflect bullets and perform acrobatic movements (we kid), is how Bandai has incorporated a four-LED projector in the case itself that will be able to display the Bat-Signal, which we have to admit is pretty cool.

Priced at 5,775 Yen, the Batman Tumbler iPhone case is expected to go on sale come March 2014.
