Nokia Normandy Could Be Android-Powered Device

Nokia Normandy Could Be Android Powered DeviceWhat you see above is an image leaked by @evleaks, and it has been touted to be the upcoming Nokia Normandy device. Leaked last month, very little was known about the Nokia Normandy, and the seemingly missing hardware shutter button, capacitive buttons and LED flash do point to this handset being an Asha device which is most likely produced to target emerging markets as well as those who are on a tight budget. The Verge’s Tom Warren has a different take on it though, as he has followed up with multiple sources, and has come away with the very real possibility of it being an Android-powered smartphone which is due for a release later next year.

An Android-powered device from Nokia? That does not sound quite right at all, especially when you consider how Nokia has been the champion for the Windows Phone 8 platform all this while, not to mention having it being acquired by Microsoft this year. Warren did share, however, that the Nokia Normandy could be an entry level Asha class handset that offers an alternative version of Android which will not be connected to Google services, giving Nokia a free hand to customize it according to its liking, pretty much in the same way Amazon has been doing with their Kindle Fire.

Sprint Offers Samsung Galaxy S4 With Sprint Spark

Sprint Offers Samsung Galaxy S4 With Sprint SparkSo, you think that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the bee’s knees ever since it came out, and cannot wait until the rumored Galaxy S5 hits the streets? Assuming you have been a Sprint subscriber all this while and have felt that LTE connectivity is insufficient for your mobile data needs in terms of speed, Sprint might have just the solution for you. The mobile carrier is offering the 16GB Samsung Galaxy S4 Spark edition, which is actually enhanced LTE, via its sales channels in the weeks to come. Of course, there is a price to pay for everything, and with the Spark edition, you will need to fork out $200 on contract, whereas the regular Galaxy S4 sells for $100 on contract.

Basically, Sprint Spark would offer you the option to take advantage of unprecedented speeds as it will merge all three Sprint bands (800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz) of 4G LTE wireless spectrum, which is touted to deliver a far greater performance level of video and other bandwidth-intensive applications. Just make sure that you happen to live in one of the cities that have Spark coverage, otherwise it would defeat the purpose of picking up this souped up handset. [Press Release]

Google Drive On iOS Allows File Sorting Now

Google Drive On iOS Allows File Sorting Now It has been quite a day for iOS users, as we have learned that the Amazon Cloud Drive photos app on the iOS platform has received native iPad as well as video upload support, which is a good thing, really. After all, as an end user of any product, would you turn down the wonders of additional features especially when you do not need to fork out a single cent more for them? The folks over at Google, too, have a little something for iOS users, as they have added a new function on Google Drive for iOS, allowing users who use the app on a compatible iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad will be able to sort the various items within the Google Drive application.

This feature is definitely far from groundbreaking, but it is useful in its own right, making it a snap to keep track of all your recently modified folders as well as files. Apart from that, you can also expect the customary bunch of changes and improvements made to the backend to accompany this particular update. All in all, it should be a whole lot more stable as well as smoother to work with. Have you noticed any improvements on your side after installation? [iTunes Link]

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Released

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition Released

A couple of exciting announcements have been made today. As if one Google Play Edition device wasn’t enough, we have been treated to two in one single day! After LG officially announced the very first Google Play Edition tablet, its vanilla Android touting G Pad 8.3, Sony too has made a similar announcement, though about a smartphone. The Sony Z Ultra Google Play Edition has been released today.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra smartphone was released earlier this year and it boasts impressive specifications. Up front, there’s a gigantic 6.4 inch HD Triluminos display powered by X-Reality for mobile engine, quadcore Snapdragon 800 processor from Qualcomm, NFC, 4G LTE, as well as IP55 & IP58 certification, proof of the Z Ultra being dust resistant and waterproof. Google Play Edition variants don’t have different hardware specifications, so the Xperia Z Ultra GPE has the exact same hardware under the hood. The only difference, a major one at that, is the software. This variant ships with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed, and since GPE provides the “Nexus experience,” these variants are further up the line whenever a major Android OS update is being rolled out. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition is available for purchase today in the U.S. through Google Play Store for $649.00, it hasn’t been revealed when this variant will be released in additional markets.

Ubuntu Touch OS Finally Has Its First Smartphone Partner

Ubuntu Touch OS Finally Has Its First Smartphone Partner

Next year might finally bring smartphones developed specifically for the Ubuntu Touch OS. Even though Canonical’s ambitious Ubuntu Edge smartphone could never reach its insane crowdfunding goal, its not like the team gave up on trying to get the OS on smartphones. Stable builds have already been released for Nexus devices, but a smartphone partner means that the OS will finally have a shot at other players in the global smartphone market. The announcement about the first hardware partner was made by Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth today at the LeWeb conference, he says that high-end phones powered by Ubuntu Touch OS will be available in 2014.

The company obviously isn’t settling for just one partner. Shuttleworth reveals that Canonical is also in board level discussions with a number of other potential partners as well, “four household brands” as he calls them, brands that “sell a lot of phone all over the world, in emerging and fully emerged markets, to businesses and consumers.” Unfortunately, he has not named the one hardware partner that they already have locked down, and neither has he revealed the names of other potential partners. Ubuntu Touch OS still has a long way to go, and its likely to receive competition from another new mobile platform that’s anxiously being awaited, Intel and Samsung’s Tizen OS. 2014 is definitely going to be an interesting year.

Galaxy S5 And Galaxy Note 4 Might Have PLS LCD Displays

Galaxy S5 And Galaxy Note 4 Might Have PLS LCD Displays

There has already been a lot of speculation about the flagship devices that Samsung is due to release in 2014. The company is expected to release Galaxy S5 ahead of schedule, and already we have heard quite a bit about what its likely to tout under the hood. Apart from the rumors of a 64-bit Exynos 6 processor and a 20 megapixel camera, a latest one coming out of Korea suggests that Samsung might not use AMOLED panels for next year’s flagship. In fact, the company is rumored to use PLS LCD displays for both the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4.

The company is apparently making this decision so as to reduce production costs by as much as 20 percent. PLS LCD panels are already used in a number of Samsung devices such as the Nexus 10 and Galaxy Note 10.1 tablets. It remains to be seen how consumers will react to this decision, that is if Samsung decides to stick with it and opt for PLS LCD displays. OLED displays are no doubt one of the biggest selling points of the high-end flagship Galaxy devices. On the other hand, recent rumors about the Galaxy S5 display suggest that it will tout a 2K resolution. So this is far from being confirmed at this stage, and with no official statement from Samsung itself, its best to take such rumors with a grain of salt.

Leap Motion Gesture Control Could Debut On Smartphones And Tablets Late Next Year

Leap Motion Gesture Control Could Debut On Smartphones And Tablets Late Next Year

Back in March, Leap Motion released a controller for conventional computers. The controllers are able to detect up to ten fingers and allow users to use gestures to control the computers. Since the initial launch, Leap Motion has gained a lot of popularity, it has even been shipping built-in to HP computers. The next frontier for this gesture control technology is smartphones and tablets, and that’s exactly what the company wants to achieve by the third quarter of 2014.

CEO Michael Buckwald revealed to TNW at a briefing in London that they have been able to overcome the hardware and technical challenges required to solve so that the technology can be incorporated in devices with smaller form factors, such as smartphones and tablets. While there’s no concrete roadmap for the products that are likely to come with Leap Motion technology, Buckwald says that the company expects tablets and phones in the market by Q3 or Q4, 2014. He sees Leap Motion in TVs, head mounted displays and “even things like cars” in the future. It remains to be seen which manufacturers and OEMs team up with the company to integrate its smart 3D gesture control technology in their mobile devices, hopefully we’ll hear more about potential partners in the next few months.

Moto Maker Will Be Launched In Latin America Next Year

Moto Maker Will Be Launched In Latin America Next Year

Alongside the Moto X smartphone, Motorola also launched its online smartphone customization studio called Moto Maker. Through the studio, customers can put an endless array of personal touches on their device, such as custom engravings and paint jobs. It was initially exclusive to AT&T subscribers before finally being opened up to all major U.S. carriers. At this point in time, Moto Maker is only available for customers in the U.S., however the company does have plans of expanding it beyond the States. Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has said that Moto Maker is going to be expanded to several countries in Latin America next year.

Latin America is going to be the first international destination for Moto Maker because the Moto X is already being sold there and due to the fact that its sales are quite strong there. However, the full range of customization options will only be offered to customers located in Brazil and Argentina, as the company has some component facilities located in those countries. Customers in other parts of Latin America are likely to have fewer customization options, but hey, something is better than nothing at all. Woodside also hinted at the possibility of Moto Maker being expanded into Europe, though he didn’t offer a timeframe of when that might happen.

Amazon Cloud Drive Photos iOS App Gets Native iPad And Video Upload Support

Amazon Cloud Drive Photos iOS App Gets Native iPad And Video Upload Support

Amazon Cloud Drive Photos app is one of the most widely used apps out there for backing up photos to the company’s cloud servers. Today, an updated version of the app for iOS has been released. The new Cloud Drive Photos iOS app brings native support for iPads as well as support for video uploading. Amazon initially launched this feature on Android over a year and a half ago, iOS users have certainly been waiting for a long time to be allowed to upload their videos to Amazon’s Cloud Drive Photos service.

Native support for the iPad means that both the full-fledged tablet and the iPad mini are now natively compatible with the app, users won’t have to run it in 2x magnified mode. Videos of up to 20 minutes in length can be uploaded, file size is limited to 2GB. While that might not seem much if you are looking to store professional videos in the cloud, the time and size limit is enough to accommodate most personal videos. The app also has an auto-upload feature, which when turned on, will upload the existing content in camera roll to the cloud. The company offers 5GB of free cloud storage to new users, the app itself is available as a free download from the App Store.

iPhone 5s Now Shipping Within 24 Hours

iPhone 5s Now Shipping Within 24 Hours

Amid recent analyst reports that Apple has finally managed to catch up with the intense demand for iPhone 5s, we now see that shipping times for the company’s latest smartphone have drastically improved. Just recently the online stores were providing a shipping estimate between 1-3 business days. Merely a few days after that improvement, it can now be clearly seen in almost all online Apple stores around the world that the iPhone 5s is ready to ship within 24 hours.

This means that customers simply need to head online, pick out a carrier of their choice and wait for the iPhone 5s to be delivered within 24 hours. Those who would rather purchase a GSM unlocked unit from the online store will have to wait for at least 3-5 business days, though that in itself is an improvement. Apple has been able to bridge the demand and supply gap in due time, with the holiday shopping season fast approaching, it would only serve the company’s interests to have as many iPhone 5s units to go ground as it can manage. While online shipping times have definitely increased, things are now also better for 60 Apple Retail Stores in the U.S. A recent survey of all of these stores revealed that there is 100 percent availability of the iPhone 5s in these stores.
