Project Hera “Confirmed” By Redditor

Project Hera “Confirmed” By RedditorIt was not too long ago that a particular rumor concerning the upcoming update for Android, where it is known as Project Hera, was whispered about. Theoretically speaking, Hera might comprise of a system redesign, not to mention a deeper level of integration of the HTML5 functionality. Well, is there any other way to shed more light on the situation? Apparently so, as a new leak has appeared on reddit that “confirms” the actualization of Project Hera, although touted that the info leaked out earlier was not 100% correct.

According to an anonymous redditor, the so-called “confirmation” of Google’s Project Hera with Gmail hails from the screenshot that you see on your right. It does seem as though the post was put up using a throwaway account, so it remains just about impossible to follow up and get any more additional details. What we do know, however, is that the post specifically mentioned that “Project Hera is real, but AP leak is not.”

This post also failed to shed any light on the theory surrounding HTML5 functionality integration being accurate or otherwise, but it does mention that the mock-ups which were posted were inaccurate. Citing “proof”, said redditor put up a picture of a development version of a Gmail redesign in the works. We would advice everyone to just be extra cautious about whatever is being shared concerning Project Hera until something official comes out.

Samsung Galaxy S4 With Sprint Spark Gets Wi-Fi Calling

Samsung Galaxy S4 With Sprint Spark Gets Wi Fi CallingIf you happen to have picked up a Samsung Galaxy S4 with Sprint Spark, here is news for you that might just help you sit up and take notice. It seems that the Galaxy S4 with Sprint Spark would make it the fourth Wi-Fi Calling enabled smartphone from Sprint, and this is made possible via an over-the-air update that had started to roll out earlier today. This particular update notification will be pushed to all of Sprint’s customers automatically throughout the coming few weeks, so if you have yet to receive yours, fret not, and play the patience card.

For those who are not in the know, Wi-Fi Calling happens to be a free service which will allow you to use voice and messaging services over current home, office and public Wi-Fi networks. Thanks to the implementation of Wi-Fi Calling, one will be able to experience improved voice, data and messaging services in locations that did not have any mobile network coverage before, or extremely limited coverage ala dead zones.

If you are an existing customer with the said handset, you ought to be able to enjoy enhanced coverage when it comes to in-building coverage or areas with challenging network conditions, while setting up the entire shebang is a snap since everything would be seamless and happens in the background. Best of all, experience unlimited voice calling and messaging on Wi-Fi, but do bear in mind that standard CDMA international rates apply for international calls. [Press Release]

LG L70 To Be Launched By MetroPCS

LG L70 To Be Launched By MetroPCSFolks who are on the lookout for the LG L70, here is some good news for you. This particular smartphone is set to appear on MetroPCS later this April, where it happens to be a member of the new LG Series III which was unveiled earlier this year even before Mobile World Congress in Barcelona had a chance to kick off. The LG L70 happens to be an Android-powered smartphone that will cater to the low end and mid-range market, where an affordable price point delivers pretty decent hardware specifications to boot.

Why MetroPCS, and just which particular crystal ball did we gaze into? No palantirs from Middle Earth were used in the process, but it seems that the leaked image from @evleaks point to a MetroPCS branding spotted on the LG L70 itself.

In terms of hardware, the LG L70 will arrive with hardware specifications that should be more or less similar to its internationally available sibling. This would translate to a 4.5” IPS display at 800 × 480 resolution, an 8MP or 5MP camera at the back, a front-facing VGA camera, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB of internal memory, 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity; GPS support and a 2,100 mAh battery. Good thing the LG L70 will have Android 4.4 KitKat right from the get go despite it being a non-flagship device. Now to wait for MetroPCS’ official announcement.

Future Android Builds Could Remind You Where You Parked Your Car

Future Android Builds Could Remind You Where You Parked Your CarThere are some who after parking their car, will take a photo of the place they parked, like a pillar which shows which level and which zone they are parked in. This makes it easy for them to remember where they left their car. However according to a recent APK teardown by the folks at Android Police, it seems that Google could be planning something similar with Google Now.

According to the APK teardown, they discovered several strings that are seemingly related to parking. This includes strings that mentions where your car is and where is its location. At this point in time it is unclear as to how Google might implement the feature but given that there are apps like Auto Finder and Valet that offer similar features, it could be based on an activity that has already been built into Android that Google will leverage in order to make it a native feature.

The cards on Google Now have been designed to catered to your specifications and needs, or at least what Google thinks you need. For example it will be able to pull up local weather, currency conversion, some choice translations when it detects you’re in a foreign country. It is also able to curate a handful of news articles based on what it thinks you like, so it would not be a stretch of the imagination to think that the cards could also help remind you where you parked.

The image to the right is not the actual image of the card but rather a mockup by the folks at Android Police at what they think it could look like. So far it seems entirely plausible but there’s no telling if this is a feature Google will actually include in its next Android build/update, or if they might decide to omit it, but what do you guys think? Would you like to see that feature arrive in future versions of Android?

BlackBerry CEO Willing To Sell Handset Division If It Becomes Unprofitable

BlackBerry CEO Willing To Sell Handset Division If It Becomes UnprofitableIn the past we have seen how BlackBerry’s previous CEOs have expressed their willingness to sell off the company in the event that things don’t go well. Thankfully that has not happened yet as BlackBerry has managed to hold onto their handset division, but it seems that BlackBerry’s newest CEO, John Chen, is not shy about letting the division go if it proves to be unprofitable.

In an interview with Reuters, Chen revealed that he would consider selling off the handset division of BlackBerry in the event the division proves to be unprofitable. According to Chen, he was quoted as saying, “If I cannot make money on handsets, I will not be in the handset business.”

However Chen did not mention at what point in time or in which state the company is in before he would make such a call. Perhaps it might never come to that, or perhaps it will, but for now it’s just one of the strategies or moves that Chen has up his sleeves in the event that things turn sour for the company.

There are also other avenues that BlackBerry could explore, according to Chen. This includes various industries like healthcare, legal, and financial services that BlackBerry could leverage their experience to participate in.

In fact according to an earlier report, BlackBerry’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand revealed his plans to make the company a “trusted consultancy” for the Australasia region, where they would provide their experience and knowledge to companies looking to better manage their smartphones.

Apple’s Recent Broadcom Hires Corroborates In-House Baseband Rumors

Apples Recent Broadcom Hires Corroborates In House Baseband RumorsAccording to earlier rumors, it has been suggested that Apple could be looking to design their own baseband chips. These chips are expected to make their way into future iPhone devices and it could be another way for Apple to control the hardware and software from start to finish. At the moment, these baseband chips are supplied by Qualcomm but made by TSMC.

To corroborate those rumors, it seems that AppleInsider has noticed that Apple has recently hired several semiconductor engineers from chipmaker, Broadcom. Both engineers have worked at Broadcom for a very long time and have experience in building RF hardware which resulted in baseband transceivers used by Nokia and Samsung.

One of the engineers, a certain Paul Chang, had worked at Broadcom for the past 11 years and it was only this February that he joined Apple as a senior program manager, and his Linkedin profile confirms it.

Another engineer, Xiping Wang, had joined Apple as an engineer back in January as per his LinkedIn profile as well. Wang had previously spent a decade as a design engineer and hardware development manager at Broadcom. These two engineers aren’t the only ones hired from Broadcom, although they are some of the more recent hires.

AppleInsider notes that over the years, Apple has added more Broadcom and Qualcomm software and hardware engineers to their list of employees. Of course it is entirely possible that these engineers could be working on something else, but given their experience and expertise, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that their work could be related to Apple’s rumored in-house baseband chips.

Mobile Gamers Tend To Quit After One Day, According To Study

Mobile Gamers Tend To Quit After One Day, According To StudyA couple of weeks ago we reported on an interesting insight which found that for the most part, many gamers don’t finish the games that they’ve started. Perhaps they got bored, perhaps something new and better came along, who knows? However interestingly it seems that when it comes to mobile games, gamers have even shorter attention spans.

According to app testing firm Swrve, they have spent the past 90 days tracking 10 million players from last year, seeing how they reacted to games released by big name publishers like Activision, Epic Games, Gameloft, and so on. The results are actually pretty amazing because they found that most mobile game players tend to quit the game after only one day.

They also found that by the 30th day, only 5.5% of the gamers of the original gamers are still playing the game. The number of sessions played is also an interesting one as they found that 45% of gamers never had more than 4 sessions of a game, and that 19% only played the game once.

Personally I’ve been guilty of downloading games and trying them out and only to quit a couple of hours later. Usually this is because while the premise of the game is interesting, early parts of the gameplay haven’t been particularly engaging. Then again everyone has different play styles, some love to get as deep into a game as possible, while others just want quick entertainment while waiting for the bus or the train.

What do you guys think of this report? Are you guilty of quitting mobile games shortly after downloading it yourelf?

4.7-inch And 5.5-inch iPhone Models Could Feature Different Resolutions [Rumor]

4.7 inch And 5.5 inch iPhone Models Could Feature Different Resolutions [Rumor]We’re sure many are wondering about Apple’s iPhone plans for the year. If the rumors are to be believed, Apple could launch two iPhones this year – one in the 4.7-inch variety and the other in a 5.5-inch variety. The rumors are also suggesting that the phones will be launched separately which is a little odd but this sentiment has been echoed by KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, who has had a good track record when it comes to making Apple-related predictions.

According to Kuo, he believes that both phones will sport different resolutions. The 4.7-inch model will come with a resolution of 1334×750, while the 5.5-inch model will get a 1920×1080 Full HD display. Naturally with the higher resolution, the pixel density of the 5.5-inch model will be higher. The good news is that Apple is expected to maintain the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5 so developers won’t have to redesign their apps again. (more…)

Mailbox For Android And Mac (Beta) Launched

Mailbox For Android And Mac (Beta) LaunchedIf you’re an iOS user converting to Android, there are probably some iOS-exclusive apps that you might miss, one of them being Mailbox. Well the good news is that if you were wondering when the app would arrive for Android, wonder no more because Mailbox has since launched for Android is available for download for free via Google Play.

The app will function just like its iOS counterpart and for those unfamiliar with the app, Mailbox is essentially another email client that sports a very clean and simple interface. It makes use of gestures, like swiping, to either delete a message, archive it, or set it to snooze to remind you to check up on it later.

The app has also received a new feature called auto-swipe which is basically where the app will learn your preferences and actions and will be able to snooze or archive messages automatically to help you become more efficient at managing your email. Personally I’d rather manage my emails myself but for those who love automation, perhaps this is a feature that might be of interest to you.

This feature will take advantage of Dropbox’s cloud services to help sync your preferences across devices, so if you use Mailbox on other devices like tablets or a second smartphone, you won’t have to teach it all over again.

The developers have also announced that Mailbox will finally be arriving for the Mac albeit in beta form and if you’re interested in participating in the beta, hit up Mailbox’s website for the details.
