Instagram To Launch Something New On December 12th

Instagram To Launch Something New On December 12th

Popular photo sharing service Instagram, which Facebook scooped up for $1 billion, has sent invites today to certain media outlets inviting them to “share a moment” with founder Kevin Systrom and the Instagram team. The invites were sent via courier and not email, wrapped with brown paper along with a white ribbon, the package had a wooden block on which an Instagram shot is printed. The block has a slot in the back, which can be used to hang it on a wall.

No further details have been provided in the invite itself. A spokesperson for Instagram declined to make any further comment, so its all pretty hush-hush as of now. Recent rumor suggests that Instagram might be working on a private messaging feature, perhaps it may elaborate more on those rumors on December 12th. However, given the peculiar state of this invite, it can be argued that perhaps Instagram is launching a service which would allow users to order prints of their filtered pet and food photos. The event has been scheduled for December 12, it will begin at 10 a.m. in Midtown Manhattan, New York. Any theories on what Instagram might have up its sleeve? Do share them with us by dropping a comment below. [Image via CNET]

Nokia Ad Depicts Tough Phone Quality

Nokia Ad Depicts Tough Phone QualityBack in the day, Nokia happened to be the 800lbs gorilla where mobile phones were concerned, and it seemed as though they could not put a foot wrong at all, being the main trendsetter and all that jazz. How the tables have turned over the years, but at least, they are doing a whole lot better than BlackBerry, as the latter seemed to have cornered just a few markets worldwide, dying a slow death. One thing that you have to hand over to Nokia for doing well, and that is the build quality of their phones, so much so that some classic handsets like the Nokia 3310 has become a famous meme breeding ground.

In one ad from Nokia, it depicts how Nokia has put through its low end Asha range to a whole lot of beatings and basically, a tough existence for any smartphone to follow through and emerge unscathed. I guess that the promo video has a certain element of truth to a degree, as Nokia has shown in the past how they used durable materials and manufacturing practices to churn out a longer lasting chassis in the long run. What are some of your most memorable moments with a Nokia handset, and do you agree that they generally last longer than other makes?

Apple Signs iPhone Deal With China Mobile

Apple Signs iPhone Deal With China Mobile

The much rumored iPhone launch deal with China Mobile has finally been signed. We heard a lot of rumors this year that the world’s largest mobile operator is finally going to start carrying some of the world’s most popular smartphones. Even though its rivals, China Unicom and China Telecom, have offered previous iPhone models in the past, China M0bile starts off with the two latest smartphones from Apple, iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c.

One major hurdle in the way of an iPhone launch on China Mobile was the carrier’s TD-LTE service. Just last week China finally granted 4G licenses to commercial carriers, meaning that the carrier can finally start its commercial 4G service. The country’s official news agency has already confirmed that China Mobile’s 4G service is going to be switched on December 18th. According to the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, both iPhones are likely to be launched on the carrier around December 18th as well.  Apple has already received the regulatory approval required to run its iPhones on China Mobile’s TD-LTE network. It received the approval back in August. Analysts expect that a decent penetration into the carrier’s over 750 million strong subscriber base could bring in an additional $9-$10 billion in revenue for Apple every single year.

Docomo Safety Mode Might Just Save Your Life

Docomo Safety Mode Might Just Save Your LifeWith the number of engaging apps on our mobile devices these days, it is extremely easy to get “lost” in them. For instance, just pay attention to any metropolitan area by sitting at the sidewalk with a cuppa, and see how many people actually do not really see where they are going. Rather, they would most probably be holding their smartphone with one or both hands, texting or sending some sort of update, or even talking on their mobiles, all without paying much attention to what is going on around. In fact, you can say that the minimal amount of attention is used to prevent bumping into another person on the street, but that’s about that. Docomo of Japan has something to offer that might just signal the end of texting while walking.

Bsically, Docomo intends to offer a “safety mode” that Android users can choose to activate if they want to. For those who enable this mode, a message will appear if you attempt to make use of your smartphone while walking. This message would read, “Using your smartphone while walking is dangerous. The phone senses you are walking. Please stop.” Should you choose the path of willful ignorance and tap “close”, you will be given another 10 seconds of use, while pressing the power button would result in another 5 more seconds of use before the device turns off.

    Samsung Galaxy Win Pro Spotted

Samsung Galaxy Win Pro SpottedThe Samsung Galaxy Win Pro might sound familiar to some of us out there, and for a very good reason, too. After all, we did talk about the Samsung Galaxy Win in the past, so it makes perfect sense for Samsung, a company that more or less caters to a wide range of customers with different needs and budgets, to roll out a better version of the Galaxy Win. It has not been officially announced at least until now, where the Galaxy Win Pro appeared on Samsung’s China web portal already. What kind of hardware specifications can we expect from the Samsung Galaxy Win Pro?

Well, the Win Pro would share some of its predecessor’s previous pedigree, where you will find a 4.5″ qHD display, a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera, and optional dual SIM support. Dual SIM support seems to be the big thing these days especially in China and some of the other developing countries, as it allows one to carry two different numbers on a single device in a convenient manner. You will get a longer lasting battery (just) with a 2,100mAh capacity, and it will be powered by Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice. Any takers?

Fleksy Keyboard For Android Leaves Beta

Fleksy Keyboard For Android Leaves BetaIt has been nearly one year after Syntellia’s Fleksy keyboard for Android debuted, and we are glad to say that there has been progress made to the situation as Fleksy is no longer in beta. Of course, some folks would point out the fact that Fleksy arrived on Google Play half a year ago, but do bear in mind that this was available only to those who had linked up with the company’s Google+ community as a tester. It is nice to know that whoever who wants to give Fleksy a go now will be able to do so, after downloading it from Google Play and installing it of course.

If you would want to give the Fleksy predictive keyboard a go, it will be free for the first 30 days so that you can try it out, but once that time period is over and you would like to continue using it, be prepared to hand over $3.99. Of course, this does not mean that Syntellia is done with improvements to the Fleksy keyboard, as they intend to make sure that the beta app remains around for testing purposes. The beta has just received a new update that adds multiple language support. For the iOS side, Fleksy 2.0 for the iPhone was introduced just two days back, boasting a completely revamped engine which is touted to deliver better responsiveness, a new user interface that will flow alongside iOS 7.

Samsung Could Be Working On Transparent Displays With Rear Touchscreen Controls

Samsung Could Be Working On Transparent Displays With Rear Touchscreen ControlsWe know that Samsung is working on devices with flexible displays. This is evidenced in the company’s display of its Youm technology earlier this year at CES 2013, and the announcement and subsequent release of the Galaxy Round, a smartphone with a curved display. However if Samsung’s patents are any indication, it seems that not only can we expect flexible displays from the South Korean tech giant in the future, but we might be able to expect transparent displays too.

According to the patent filed by Samsung, it describes a device in which how using touch controls on the back of the device, such as through a transparent touchscreen display can be used to perform different functions. For example during a video clip, tapping the back of the display can pause the video and sliding your finger on the back will allow you to capture a screenshot as well. The patent also describes how one can move to overlapping objects, with one finger on the front and the other at the back, with both fingers controlling either object.

The transparent touchscreen display can also allow for more elaborate unlocking mechanisms, for example. This is not the first time rear touch controls have been implemented. In fact Sony’s PS Vita comes with rear touch pads which can be used during games as well. As with the case of most patents, it’s hard to tell if and when Samsung will start making these displays a reality, but in the meantime what do you guys think?
