LG G Flex Global Release Reportedly Slated For Early December

LG G Flex Global Release Reportedly Slated For Early December

LG appears to be much more serious about its flexible smartphone, the G Flex, as opposed to the Samsung Galaxy Round. The latter is said to be a prototype of sorts which has only been released in extremely limited quantity in Korea, global launch is not expected. On the other hand LG has already talked about its plans of taking the G Flex around the world, and the release might kick off from early December. Latest reports suggest that LG is holding a launch event of the device on December 3rd in Hong Kong which will mark the global release of the device. Invitations for this event have reportedly been sent out.

The timeframe sits around Orange’s proposed timeframe for selling the G Flex in France, and possibly in other European markets as well. The global release will not bring the device Stateside immediately, it is likely that the G Flex might become available from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in early 2014. By then, it is possible that LG might roll out the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the G Flex. LG’s flexible smartphone is the first commercially available device that has a 6 inch 1,280×720 pixels curved flexible display as well as a “self-healing” back that even survives knife attacks. Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 Leaked

Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2 Leaked

Another day, another Galaxy smartphone. Samsung has already launched a plethora of “Galaxy” branded smartphones this year, from high-end devices to mid-range and low-end devices, the company has all bases covered. Apparently its not quite done yet as another Galaxy smartphone has leaked online and is expected to be launched soon. The Galaxy S Duos 2 will be the successor to last year’s Galaxy S Duos, the defining feature of this device being the dual-SIM compatibility. Its highly likely that this device will be exclusive to emerging markets only, where substantial demand for dual-SIM smartphones exists.

The Galaxy S Duos 2 is said to have a 4 inch 480×800 touchscreen display, a 1.2GHz dualcore processor, 768MB RAM, 4GB of onboard storage, 5 megapixel rear camera, microSD card slot and a 1,500mAh battery. It is said to run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. The promotional materials that have leaked alongside the images indicate that Galaxy Duos 2 is going to have the Multi-Window feature as well, one that we normally see on high-end Samsung devices. It wouldn’t be much more than a marketing ploy given the fact that the Multi-Window experience wouldn’t be as good on a 4 inch display as it is on phablets like the Note 3 and Galaxy S4. iPhone Location Tracking Lawsuit Has Been Dismissed

iPhone Location Tracking Lawsuit Has Been Dismissed

Back in 2011 a team of British security researchers discovered that iOS on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch was building a record of the device’s location history, Wi-Fi network and cell tower location data to be precise, data which would allow the device to track itself faster than a GPS alone could. The data was also being copied over the computer if the device was connected to it. This obviously caused a lot of security concerns, though the late Steve Jobs denied at that time that Apple was not deliberately collecting location information, rather the company attributed the behaviour to a bug which was fixed through a firmware update. A class action lawsuit was eventually filed against Apple which has now been dismissed.

The plaintiffs argued that iOS had allegedly been designed to transmit iOS devices’ location to third-party app developers without the approval or consent of the users, and that this transmission of location data harmed the device’s performance by taking up storage space and reducing battery life. Plaintiffs also argued that location information would be collected anyway even if users turned off Location Services in the Settings app, Apple said this was due to a bug and fixed it through iOS 4.3.3. Judge Lucy Koh ruled that the plaintiffs “failed to show that there is a genuine issue of material fact” which is why the court has concluded that there is no standing to pursue the claims against Apple.

China Mobile Might Launch Samsung’s Flagships Alongside The iPhones

China Mobile Might Launch Samsungs Flagships Alongside The iPhones

It was recently confirmed by China’s official state news agency that China Mobile is going to switch on its commercial 4G service on December 18th. On that day it will also finally launch the new iPhones, over the past few months it has been rumored quite a few times that China Mobile is going to carry both iPhones this year. If reports coming out of China are true, the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s might not be the only TD-LTE capable devices that the world’s largest mobile carrier launches on December 18th. Samsung’s flagship devices might be there to give the iPhones a run for their money.

Local media in China reports that the country’s version of the FCC has approved TD-LTE compatible Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, model numbers GT-I9508C and SM-N9008V respectively. Given the reports that both devices have already received regulatory approval, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they’re launched alongside the new iPhones on December 18th. China Mobile’s move to carry the iPhones will no doubt be beneficial for Apple, as its iPhones have never before been carried by the world’s largest mobile operator that touts over 750 million subscribers. For consumers, it would be a welcome step, as they get to choose between Android and iOS devices before climbing up the 4G ladder.

Samsung’s Marketing Budget Stands At $14 Billion

Samsung’s Marketing Budget Stands At $14 BillionThe advertising industry certainly has its fair share of ups and downs, but one thing’s for sure – there is plenty of money to be made in this particular industry. From what we know, Samsung is tipped to spend a whopping $14 billion in 2013 alone when it comes to advertising and promoting its consumer electronics to the masses. That would make Samsung be on top of a list that they most probably would not want to, that is, having the largest percentage of revenue compared to any of the other top 20 companies (by revenue) when it comes to splurging on advertising.

For comparison’s sake, Apple spends just 0.6% of its revenue on advertising, while Samsung themselves have forked out as much as 5.4%, which is nearly ten times more than what its rival Apple spends. J.K. Shin claims that splurging all of that money has helped them end up at where they are today, with Samsung being one of the names sought after where smartphones are concerned. How has all of that advertising money from Samsung influenced the way you purchased products down the road? One thing’s for sure, spending more does not necessarily mean earning more bottomline.

US Carriers Able To Block Activation Of Stolen Smartphones That Are Abroad

US Carriers Able To Block Activation Of Stolen Smartphones That Are AbroadAccording to the good people over at the US wireless industry group CTIA, they have recently made an announcement that will bring a smile to the faces of smartphone users. In this announcement, the stolen phone database which was first launched in 2012 by AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon will kick into action, where it will in fact be integrated with carriers from outside of North America. In other words, we are looking at a collaboration with international carriers, where it would allow foreign operators block stolen US device activations. Stolen smartphones from the US that are activated abroad have long been a thorn in the flesh for law enforcement officials in the US, where the stolen phone database is seemingly a white elephant, as it is unable to be of any use should the stolen smartphones be sent outside of the US, since the respective serial numbers remain undetected.

The law enforcement officials will most probably want to see the inclusion of kill switches that are then installed in handsets so that phone theft will be crippled, at least to a certain extent, but most carriers are not too happy with such a suggestion. What do you think of the whole situation, and how would you remedy it?

Dual-SIM HTC One Goes On Sale In The UK

Dual SIM HTC One Goes On Sale In The UK

We often don’t see dual-SIM variants of flagship smartphones being released in the West, they’re usually released in markets such as India and China where substantial demand for these variants already exists. HTC One was launched earlier this year and despite the fact that it brought in raving reviews, the device didn’t exactly do wonders for the company in terms of generating revenue. HTC released dual-SIM variant of its flagship in both China and Russia now it has brought the variant over to the UK, a move that’s likely to make carrier partners a bit angry.

The reason why carrier partners may find fault with this move is because dual-SIM phones can’t be locked to one single carrier. That’s the entire premise of a device being able to run two SIMs, the user is free to switch networks. The dual-SIM HTC One is now available for pre-order through HTC UK’s website, it costs £494.99, exactly the same as an unlocked single-SIM HTC One. The dual-SIM variant does come with a microSD card slot, something that’s not present on the other variant. It also has a removable back cover but the battery is not user replaceable. The dual-SIM variant also lacks 4G LTE support. Its definitely a major shift for HTC to offer a dual-SIM variant of its flagship device in the UK, it remains to be seen if the company has any plans of doing the same over in the U.S.

Nexus One Receives Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROM

Nexus One Receives Android 4.4 KitKat Custom ROMMany smartphones are definitely doing their bit to jump aboard the KitKat bandwagon these days (those that are powered by Android, of course), and we have also seen our fair share of devices that have already made the plunge. Among them include the HTC One Google Play Edition, AT&T’s Moto X, not to mention T-Mobile’s version of the Motorola Moto X as well, in addition to the Nexus 4. Well, for those of you who have not upgraded your smartphone for the longest time, the Nexus One will now have its own Android 4.4 KitKat update, although you would do well to take note that this is but a hacked version, meaning that it is a custom Android 4.4 ROM, and is not official.

Hence, there might just be issues with the ROM after installation, so go ahead at your own risk, assuming you have the appetite for that. Needless to say, this custom ROM for a device that is already three years old does come with its own fair share of issues, with one of the being a known bootloop error as well as the lack of capturing a screenshot as and when you need it. Oh yeah, the camera does not quite function as you would have expected, too.

It currently lacks automatic camera syncing but that will come, along with iPad support, in a future update. What’s next for Mega? It’s on course to launch its Sync tool for Windows, Mac and Linux in the coming weeks, giving it time to concentrate on adding new security and messaging features to the cloud service in the new year.
