Nokia Lumia 525 Announced

Nokia Lumia 525 AnnouncedIt’s probably common knowledge by now that the Nokia Lumia 520 is Nokia’s most popular Windows Phone handset to date. In fact it seems that it is probably the most popular Windows Phone handset so far, so we guess it’s to no surprise that Nokia has announced a successor in the form of the Lumia 525. We had heard rumors about the Lumia 525 for a while now and even had its specs leak not too long ago, but we guess it looks like things are official at last.

While there’s no word on pricing or availability, it seems that for now the Lumia 525 will be headed for Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific region, but it is unclear as to whether those of us living stateside will be seeing it. Then again the Lumia 520 was launched in the US as T-Mobile’s Lumia 521, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Nokia decided to release a variant for the US as well. In terms of the specs, the earlier leak appeared to be on point.

The Lumia 525 will feature a 4” display and will sport a 5MP rear-facing camera without a flash, similar to the Lumia 520. The main difference would probably be its RAM which has since been doubled to 1GB. It will be powered by a dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor and will feature swappable covers like previous Lumia models.

BlackBerry Announces BBM Partnership With Several Android OEMs

BlackBerry Announces BBM Partnership With Several Android OEMsWhile BBM is pretty established as far as messaging apps are concerned, it does have some pretty stiff competition in the form of WhatsApp, LINE,Viber, and etc., all of which have established themselves on iOS and Android operating systems for years. Well it looks like BlackBerry could be making up for lost time as the company has recently announced that they have managed to partner up with several Android manufacturers who will ensure that the BBM app, as far as Android devices are concerned, will come preinstalled on said devices.

According to BlackBerry’s press release, these OEMs are from the Africa, India, Indonesia, Latin America and the Middle East region, with names that some of you guys may or may not be familiar with such as, Be, Brightstar, Celkon, EVERCOSS, IMO, Micromax, Mito, Snexian, Spice, TECNO, TiPhone and Zen. While BlackBerry would undoubtedly benefit greater from partnering with companies such as Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG, and Sony, who are some of the bigger names in the Android industry, we guess this is a good start and perhaps in the future more Android OEMs will be hopping aboard the BBM bandwagon.

Verizon’s Redbox Instant now supports AirPlay streaming

Verizon’s subscription streaming TV service, Redbox Instant, now supports Apple’s AirPlay thanks to a new version 1.4 iOS app update — with some caveats. For starters, though you’ll be able to play streaming content on your iOS 6 device, the app doesn’t support downloaded material as yet. Also, your viewing may be broken off if you receive texts and certain notifications, if you lock the device or if you quit Redbox to use another app. Meanwhile, AirPlay Mirroring, which lets you play from your device with your TV as a second screen, will still work just fine. Other tweaks include the usual bug fixes and improvements to the recommendations engine. So, if you’ve got Apple TV and want to give it a whirl, hit the source — just make sure to tell your pals not to contact you mid-film.

Nokia’s Lumia 525 upgrades its bestselling Windows Phone with more memory

Nokia’s Lumia 525 popped up in a Chinese regulatory filing earlier this month, but now we have official information about this new budget Windows Phone 8 device. In lieu of fanfare or a Middle Eastern press event, it’s appeared via a YouTube video (embedded after the break) and a simple product page. Appearing as a successor to the popular Lumia 520, the 525 keeps the swappable covers (orange, yellow or white) like previous Lumia models and the polycarbonate style-jacking iPhone 5c, while doubling the amount of RAM inside to 1GB. Just like the earlier model, it has a 4-inch screen, the 5MP rear camera is still without flash, microSD storage expansion, and it’s powered by a dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor. It will arrive with Nokia’s usual Lumia apps, but with that extra memory it can run more of them at once.

There’s no release information yet on the page yet, while the website only lists Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific. However, Nokia has said it will not be coming to the US or the UK. Fortunately, Engadget Chinese reports the 525 and 526 have been announced for China Unicom and China Mobile, respectively, at an off-contract price of 1,099 yuan ($180 US), shipping in December. This pricing is in line with the 520, aligning this as the pay-as-you-go WP8 option it appears to be, but we’ll keep an eye out for domestic carrier release info just to be sure. %Gallery-slideshow123399%

Nokia Lumia 520 Continues To Dominate The Windows Phone Market

Nokia Lumia 520 Continues To Dominate The Windows Phone MarketIt’s safe to say that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform is best represented by none other than Nokia, who according to the latest figures, has managed to dominate about 90% of the Windows Phone market worldwide, and according to the figures, it looks like this is largely thanks to the Nokia Lumia 520, a seemingly low-mid ranged device that surprisingly turned out to be a pretty huge hit. Back in August we had reported that the Lumia 520 accounted for the majority of Nokia Lumia devices out there, but according to the latest figures, it looks like that number might have gone up a bit.

The figures released by AdDuplex shows that the Lumia 520 commands about 26.5% of the market at the moment, but when you combine it with T-Mobile’s Lumia 521, which is essentially a Lumia 520 variant, that number could be around 29.9%, which is like saying that a third of all Windows Phone devices used at the moment are that of the Lumia 520 family! Unsurprising given that last we checked, the Lumia 521 was actually the most used Windows Phone in the US. What do you guys think? Anyone else surprised that Nokia’s higher-end devices aren’t doing as well as their low-end ones?

Samsung Galaxy S5 Might Have Multiparty Video Conference Call Feature

Samsung Galaxy S5 Might Have Multiparty Video Conference Call Feature

It was rumored a few weeks back that Samsung might release the Galaxy S5 earlier than expected. Since then, rumors about the Galaxy S5 have started to circulate. It is believed that the smartphone will ditch plastic this time around for metal, and that it will come with Samsung’s new 64-bit Exynos processor. The company is known to unveil new software features with its devices as well which are meant to enhance user experience. Galaxy S4 brought few new software features, so its not a long shot to assume that Galaxy S5 might have software features of its own. Rumor has it that the upcoming smartphone might have multiparty video conference call feature built-in.

An interface for this feature can be seen in a document that has been filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service. It looks like the feature will allow users to use both front and rear cameras during multiparty video conference calls, while video feeds from other participants are displayed in the bottom. It isn’t entirely clear at this point in time if this feature will be exclusive to the Galaxy S5 or if it will be added to ChatON through an update. If Samsung does add it to ChatON, then its messaging app will definitely get a leg up on the competition. [Image via Galaxyclub]

Moto G review: an affordable smartphone, done right

Moto G review: an affordable smartphone, done right

Since Motorola was acquired by a certain tech giant last year, its new owner hasn’t had a particularly strong impact on the way it does business. Not too long ago, in fact, Motorola dealt another brag-hand of Droids, but there was something distinct about the Moto X that followed them. The first evidence of a change in direction, perhaps. In the same vein, the recently announced Moto G feels very much like a Google phone, and it makes a ton of sense.

If the Nexus 5 is for smartphone aficionados, and the Moto X is for upgraders who can’t resist the offer of a custom handset, then the Moto G is for those who want a functional device at a reasonable price. At $179 or £135 unlocked, the Moto G slots into the low-cost niche Samsung and others have been steadily cashing in on. That price tag, however, includes an unwritten disclaimer: Sacrifices were made. It’s certainly true with the Moto G, but with expectations in check, it’s hard to not be impressed with what Motorola has managed to achieve.%Gallery-slideshow122931%

BlackBerry Reportedly Overtakes Samsung In South Africa

BlackBerry Reportedly Overtakes Samsung In South Africa

Over the past few years BlackBerry has bled market share. It used to dominate North America once, but then iPhone and Android happened. The company’s devices then thrived in emerging markets, but earlier this year it was revealed that BlackBerry has been struggling in those markets as well at the hands of low cost Android smartphones. Though it looks like the Canadian manufacturer just might be doing well in South Africa. According to statistics released by World Wide Worx and Dashboard, BlackBerry’s market share in South Africa is up from 18 percent to 23 percent from 2012 to 2013, whereas Samsung stayed put at 18 percent.

Though the stats don’t reveal if this bump is due to BlackBerry’s new BB10 devices or if its legacy devices are performing particularly well in South Africa. Overtaking Samsung doesn’t mean that BlackBerry dominates that particular market. Nokia rules the cellphone market in South Africa, holding some 44 percent, down from 50 percent this time last year. It is not known if majority of that share is accounted for by Windows Phone powered Lumia devices or Nokia’s low-end feature phones. Anyway, this is perhaps the first positive report related to the performance of BlackBerry devices in months, so fans of the company can rejoice, even if the company continues to struggle in crucial markets like Europe and North America.
