US carriers no longer let premium text message services bill customers

Facebook girl is mad!

Among the many surprise costs that annoy cellphone owners, unwanted text message service fees can be the worst; they’re hard to stop, and not always worth the effort. Those fees may not irk many US subscribers after today, though — AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile now stop “problematic” premium SMS services from billing their customers. Donations and those all-important talent show votes will still go through. Verizon isn’t part of today’s announcements, although the company’s General Counsel William Petersen tells us that Big Red is already “winding down” premium SMS services. There’s a good chance that these shady messagers will simply change tactics, but they’ll at least have a tougher time scamming phone owners.

FCC Considering Allowing Cellular Calls To Be Placed In-Flight

FCC Considering Allowing Cellular Calls To Be Placed In FlightPreviously we had reported how the FAA had decided that it would be OK for passengers to use their personal electronic devices (PEDs) during all stages of the flight. However there were limitations, such as the type of device being used (laptops were a no-go), and that calls were not allowed to be placed, although in the case of Southwest Airlines, they will provide WiFi so presumably VoIP is still good to go. In any case it seems that in light of this recent development, the US FCC is considering lifting restrictions on placing calls and allowing cellular voice to be used above 10,000 feet, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

This proposal is expected to be presented at a meeting in December, and assuming it is approved, airline companies will be able to allow passengers to use their devices to place calls mid-air. However it seems that despite the possibility that this rule could be relaxed, not all airline companies are enthused by the idea as they claim that this could affect passenger comfort, such as having to deal with a passenger yakking on the flight non-stop for the next 3-hours. Airlines would also be required to install special equipment to communicate with cell towers, which is an added expense that they might not deem to be worth it. Either way we guess we will just have to wait and see, but in the meantime are you for or against this proposal?

BlackBerry Acquires ScrOON To Help Make BBM Profitable

BlackBerry Acquires ScrOON To Help Make BBM ProfitableBlackBerry’s BBM app is free to use and comes bundled with BlackBerry phones, and has also made its way, also for free, onto iOS and Android devices. With the app being free, how does BlackBerry plan on making money from it? After all WhatsApp has a subscription service and LINE has in-app purchases to help generate revenue, so what can BBM do to help make money? While that remains to be seen, it looks like BlackBerry has recently made an acquisition in the form of ScrOOn that is a company that helps to manage the social media pages of large companies, such as Warner Bros. Entertainment, LVMH, and etc.

According to ScrOOn’s founder, Alexandre Mars, he states that the acquisition is part of BlackBerry’s bid to make a profit from their BBM platform. One of the ways could be from dedicated BlackBerry channels focused on a specific theme, and like we can see from the companies that ScrOOn helps to manage, these channels could range from entertainment to fashion and luxury goods, where companies can pay to have sponsored posts in these channels that target a specific group of customers. It sounds like an interesting idea and we have to wonder when such an initiative will kick off, but if anything it looks like the wheels are already in motion with this acquisition.

Google Engineer Details How Updates Are Rolled Out To Nexus Devices

Google Engineer Details How Updates Are Rolled Out To Nexus DevicesHave you ever wondered how Google rolls out its updates to its Nexus devices? Well for those unfamiliar, updates are typically rolled out in phases, but thanks to a thread on Reddit that has been answered by Google engineer, Dan Morrill, he has shed some light on how the rollout process works, which hopefully will let you have a better understanding of updates done OTA and why sometimes you have to be patient and just wait it out, instead of mashing the “Check for updates” button, which he claims will do absolutely nothing in terms of bringing you the update faster. Huawei Ascend W2 To See A November Release

Huawei Ascend W2 To See A November ReleaseWhen it comes to Windows Phone devices, Nokia is probably the name that most people are familiar with, but let’s not forget the folks at Huawei who also make such devices, like the recently announced Huawei Ascend W2. The handset was officially announced earlier this month, although Huawei did leave out certain details, such as when the handset would be made available, and how much it will cost. The latter will presumably depend on where you are, but in China it is reportedly selling for around $150, so we don’t expect it to deviate too much from its price.

As for availability, Huawei has announced that the handset will be made available  in Russia and the Netherlands later this month, and is expected to roll out to markets such a India in the near future as well. The Huawei Ascend W2, for those who might have forgotten, comes in a variety of different colors, such as black, blue, yellow, or red. It will feature a 4.3” IPS WVGA LCD TFT display with Magic Touch technology. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.4GHz (dual-core), 512MB of RAM, and will come with 8GB of onboard storage with microSD support. It will also feature a 5MP rear-facing camera and will not come with a front-facing camera, unfortunately.

Nokia Makes Snide Remark About BlackBerry On Twitter

Nokia Makes Snide Remark About BlackBerry On TwitterAs it stands both the BlackBerry and Windows Phone platform are duking it to secure the third spot in the smartphone market, and recently BlackBerry had posted an image on its Twitter page which reads, “If you don’t know who’s got one, you don’t know the right people,” presumably referring to ownership of BlackBerry phones. The message seemed innocent enough, until Nokia decided to respond on Twitter with a barb of their own, saying, “You don’t know who’s got one because everyone has made the #SwitchToLumia”.

Admittedly it does seem a little arrogant of Nokia to post such a response, but we can’t but agree. So far as far as making the news is concerned, BlackBerry has been making the headlines as a company that’s fighting to survive and has recently received a $1 billion injection from Fairfax Financial, as opposed to Nokia who has been coming out with some pretty impressive products, stealing market share, and was recently bought up by Microsoft for a whopping $7.17 billion. Of course who’s to say the situations won’t be reversed next year, or the year after, but what do you guys think? Does Nokia have the right to be this cocky about their position at the moment?

Samsung Galaxy Mega coming to MetroPCS on November 25th, for $399 at launch

Samsung’s other behemoth of a smartphone, the Galaxy Mega, is most definitely not one of the newest on the block. Still, we can’t imagine why MetroPCS users would complain about having yet another Android device to choose from. Starting November 25th, the carrier is making the 6.3-inch handset available on its network, complete with LTE support (where available) and a $399 price tag at launch. It’s worth mentioning that the MSRP is actually $499, but in the spirit of the holidays, MetroPCS is marking it at $100 less to kick things off — new customers, meanwhile, can get it for as low as $349. You’ll be able to snag one for yourself online or from the nearest brick-and-mortar store — if big, really big smartphones are your thing, that is.

FCC reportedly proposing that passengers can use cellular service in mid-flight (update: confirmed)

    Device use on a plane

While the FAA has cleared the use of electronics on US passenger airplanes at all stages of flight, there’s still one major restriction in place: you have to shut off all cellular access. That rule may not exist for much longer if the FCC has its way, according to sources for the Wall Street Journal. The agency will reportedly use its December meeting to propose letting passengers make phone calls and use cellular data whenever they’re flying above 10,000 feet. Don’t be too eager to start chatting in mid-air, though. The FCC hasn’t publicly confirmed the proposal, and any new policy wouldn’t be mandatory — carriers could still ask for radio silence, and special equipment would need to be installed in order for each plane to communicate with towers on the ground. If implemented, though, the relaxed rules could make your phone’s airplane mode seem like more of a relic than a necessity.

Update: Chairman Tom Wheeler has issued a statement about the earlier report:

“Today, we circulated a proposal to expand consumer access and choice for in-flight mobile broadband. Modern technologies can deliver mobile services in the air safely and reliably, and the time is right to review our outdated and restrictive rules. I look forward to working closely with my colleagues, the FAA, and the airline industry on this review of new mobile opportunities for consumers.

Tumblr For iOS Gets An All New Design

Tumblr is a popular blogging platform that’s now owned by Yahoo. The team has updated Tumblr for iOS app which now has an all new design that’s much more in sync with the look and feel of iOS 7. Apple made some drastic user interface changes in its latest iOS version, since its release quite a lot of apps have been updated and redesigned to be more consistent with iOS 7. The dashboard, where posts from followed blogs are displayed, has received a total makeover and its now much more refined, clean and easy to navigate.

There’s also a new compose screen which contains post creation options in a grid layout. The app has a new activity tap which makes it easier to stay on top of all reblogs, followers and likes. Users also have the option to reblog faster than ever before, a feature that’s quite likely to be appreciated by Tumblr users. Another new feature in this update is autocomplete for tags, making it much faster to add relevant tags to posts. Tumblr for iOS works natively on both the iPhone and the iPad, so users on the tablet’s big screen get to use the new interface as well. WhatsApp For Nokia Asha 501 Released

WhatsApp For Nokia Asha 501 Released

Its no secret that instant messaging applications have become quite popular than texting, because while the latter incurs charges, IM apps allow users to send messages around the world for virtually no cost at all. WhatsApp is one of the most widely used IM applications out there, and it is available for a number of platforms. Originally announced at Nokia World 2013 in Abu Dhabi, WhatsApp for Nokia Asha 501 has been released today.

Before users can install the app, they will need to install an over-the-air software update that starts rolling out this week. Without first installing the update WhatsApp for Asha 501 can not be downloaded on the device. When users log in for the first time, the app will automatically locate contacts who’re already using WhatsApp. The app can be used to send text messages, photos and videos as well as voice messages. Messages are either routed through the 2G cellular connection or through Wi-Fi. The app is available as a free download for Nokia Asha 501. The Asha 500, 502 and 503 phones, which were recently announced, will have WhatsApp pre-installed when they start selling in the coming weeks. The app opens up a whole new communication channel for Asha users, who will be able to communicate with friends and family even if they are on different phones made by different manufacturers.
