Xiaomi to set up 18 stores in China by end of year, but not for selling phones or TVs

Even though Xiaomi’s been doing quite well in mainland China and Taiwan, you still won’t be able to find its products in brick-and-mortar stores, except for those of partner carriers and scalpers. This is why we got a bit giddy when we heard the company is now in the process of setting up 18 stores across China. But there’s a catch: you won’t be able to buy any Xiaomi Phones or Xiaomi TVs in them. Instead, you’ll only find accessories there, including the Xiaomi Box, phone cases, batteries, cables, RC toys, clothes and even dolls of the Xiaomi bunny mascot.

Oppo’s VP Resigns, Plans To Create The “Perfect” Android Smartphone With CyanogenMod

Oppos VP Resigns, Plans To Create The Perfect Android Smartphone With CyanogenModJust last week we had heard the rumors that the folks behind the CyanogenMod custom ROM for Android phone, now known as Cyanogen Inc., were planning to launch a phone of their own. This would be different from the Oppo N1 which would come with the ROM preinstalled. Well now it looks like things are definitely starting to heat up because Oppo’s VP, Pete Lau, has recently announced that he will be resigning from Oppo and that today would be his last day at the company. His future plans include developing an online brand from scratch and his company’s first product will feature top hardware specs and will run the CyanogenMod ROM.

According to Lau’s Sina Weibo post (China’s equivalent of Twitter), they are “plotting on something that may change the world of Android,” and that they are working on creating the “perfect” Android flagship device. In any case while Oppo might be a brand known mostly in the Chinese market, CyanogenMod is a ROM used by countless Android users all over the world. Together with Lau’s knowledge and experience building smartphones, and with CyanogenMod’s massive following, it is possible that this “perfect” Android device could appeal to users all around the world. What do you guys think?

Samsung To Begin Mass Producing High Resolution 560ppi Displays

Samsung To Begin Mass Producing High Resolution 560ppi DisplaysEarlier this month, we heard reports that Samsung was planning on launching phones in 2014/2015 that would feature high resolution displays, supposedly that of the 4K UHD variety. Well it turns out that Samsung’s plan could be on track and still on schedule as new reports have surfaced suggesting that the South Korean tech giant could be getting ready to mass produce their high resolution displays, and that the Samsung Galaxy S5 could possibly be the first smartphone from Samsung, and probably first amongst everyone else, to sport a display that could feature pixel density as high as 560ppi.

Assuming Samsung will not be increasing the display size of the Galaxy S5 and keeps it at 5” just like they did with the Samsung Galaxy S4, we are talking about a display resolution of 2560×1440, which is actually a bit higher than the Apple iPad Air. As it stands Full HD resolutions are pretty sharp and we doubt bumping it to 2560×1440 will yield any noticeable differences, but we’re not complaining and it will most likely be used as a marketing point at the end of the day. What do you guys think? Anyone looking forward to 560ppi smartphones in 2014? Or do you think that’s starting to get a bit ridiculous?

Samsung Galaxy J Could Be Headed For Markets Outside Of Japan

Samsung Galaxy J Could Be Headed For Markets Outside Of JapanBack in October, a leaked photo showed a certain Samsung Galaxy J which at that time appeared to be exclusive for Japan’s NTT DOCOMO network, but now thanks to a new benchmark sighting, there is a small chance the Galaxy J could be headed for international waters in the near future. According to the benchmark sighting, it reveals a certain device with the model number, SGH-075T. The Galaxy J for NTT DOCOMO has a model number of SGH-075, and by adding the “T” to the back of the name, it has been speculated that this could either arrive for T-Mobile in the US, or Telstra in Australia, where Samsung typically names their products for either carrier this case.

For those unfamiliar, the Galaxy J appears to be a cross between the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3, where the device will feature 5” display similar to that of the Galaxy S4, but will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset, 3GB of RAM, and will come with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean preinstalled, although we are hoping it could be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat in the near future. In any case there’s no telling when the device will launch, or if it will launch on either T-Mobile or Telstra, but we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for more information.

Oppo’s VP resigns amid rumors of building an online brand with Cyanogen Inc.

Recent years saw the birth of many new online brands in China, with Xiaomi being the most notable one with its complete ecosystem on top of aggressive pricing. And at last, it looks like local competitor Oppo wants a share of that pie as well. According to a rumor from just before the weekend, the company’s VP Pete Lau (pictured above) will be developing a new online brand from scratch, and its first product will feature top hardware specs along with CyanogenMod — the same renowned Android ROM that’s headed to Oppo’s flagship N1 and Find 5. More interestingly, Lau has just announced that today’s his last day at Oppo.

Moto X Hinted For Possible EMEA Release In The Future

Moto X Hinted For Possible EMEA Release In The FutureBack when Motorola first announced the Moto X, they also stated that the device would be limited to the US market for now. Given that the device is pretty unique in terms of how it can be customized, along with some of its features, safe to say there were plenty of users in overseas markets who were looking for a way to get their hands on the device. Well the good news is that it looks like the Moto X could make its way to other parts of the world in the future, although for now nothing has been confirmed yet.

This is according to an interview with TechRadar, where Motorola’s Senior Marketing Director, Marcus Frost, stated that there was a possibility of the Moto X heading to the EMEA region. Frost did not confirm a time when the device would launch, if at all, but simply stated that the company was curious about the region and how the Moto X would fare, saying, “The reception of Moto X has been fantastic and we’re continuously perusing opportunities in the EMEA region, so really watch this space.” Once again this is not a confirmation, but it’s still somewhat exciting news for our friends over in the EMEA region who were looking forward to getting their hands on the device.

    WhatsApp For Windows Phone Updated

WhatsApp For Windows Phone UpdatedJust how much of an impact do you think that WhatsApp has had on the SMS scene where mobile carriers are concerned? After all, you fork out just a small amount for the app (free in some cases), and with a data or Wi-Fi connection, you are able to communicate with everyone else on WhatsApp for free, including sending back and forth photos as well as audio clips, or videos in some cases. This has made WhatsApp to be one of the more popular apps across all mobile operating system platforms, and here we are with word that WhatsApp for Windows Phone has received yet another update, not it has not done so already in the past.

What would change in this latest WhatsApp update for Windows Phone? Apparently, WhatsApp has already killed off an issue in version 2.11.310, where it threw errors when some users wanted to register with the service, and these folks were faced with a “no routes” alert. If you are a Windows Phone user, how essential is WhatsApp to your smartphone? Is it one of those indispensable apps that you make use of each day, or are you all right without checking it out? Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

King Of Fighters 97 Hit The Android Scene

King Of Fighters 97 Hit The Android SceneDo you like to revisit the games of old once in a while, just to see whether you still “have it” when it comes to reflexes, as well as are able to remember all the little secrets of the game that once consumed your entire life? For those who have answered in the affirmative, then you would most probably be more than pleased to hear that King of Fighters 97 has now arrived to the Android mobile operating system, thanks to the folks over at SNK Playmore. If you have yet to be introduced to the King of Fighters genre, it is a team-based fighting game with a collection of 35 playable characters to choose from.

The Android version does come with access to hidden characters which were once available in the NEO GEO console. There are a couple of modes to choose from, including Advanced and Extra, where each of them would offer its own special killer moves as well as features. The asking price for this Android port? $4 a pop. Something tells me that a dedicated joypad would still serve a video game better in terms of controls, especially when it comes to beat ‘em ups, as a touchscreen display with virtual controls are simply not as reliable. Moto G LED Notification Light Glitch

Moto G LED Notification Light GlitchApparently, those who happen to own the Motorola Moto G might have noticed that their brand new smartphone arrived with a glitch that has something to do with the LED notification light. Apparently, there are no controls available for the light on the Settings page. There is a little bit of information from your Google account which will arrive over the cloud to the Moto G, where your Google account could also inform your handset to restore the notification light setting from your previous handset which would then disable it on the Moto G. It is then nice to hear that there is a solution, and this particular solution does not involve any kind of hacking. Rather, it is a snap to perform, where all you need to do is to download and install the Notification Light Widget that is freely available over on the Google Play Store.

This Notification Light Widget will endow the Moto G owner with the ability to be able to control the notification light on the device directly. Other users of Android-powered devices who are on the lookout for a smartphone which will be able to let you control the LED notification light, this widget is worth checking out.
