Pantech’s Vega Secret Note Off To A Good Start In South Korea

Pantechs Vega Secret Note Off To A Good Start In South KoreaBack in October, Pantech announced their own phablet for the South Korean market in the form of the Pantech Vega Secret Note. The device appeared to take on the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 and according to the latest figures, it shows that despite the device seemingly looking like a copycat, it has gone on to do pretty well for itself and has managed to sell about 200,000 units in just a month from its launch. This is compared to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which according to reports was not as well received in their own country, although its sales figures of 5 million units in a month is still pretty impressive.

We’re not sure if Pantech ever plans on bringing the Vega Secret Note to the US, and while 200,000 compared to 5 million is a pretty huge gap, we reckon it should be enough to give the company enough confidence to improve and perhaps release an even better successor. For those wondering, Pantech’s phablet offering will pack a 5.9” Full HD display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset under its hood. It will also be accompanied by a 13MP camera, 3GB of RAM, and stylus support. Not too shabby, huh?

LG G Flex For AT&T And T-Mobile Pass Through The FCC

LG G Flex For AT&T And T Mobile Pass Through The FCCIt wasn’t too long ago that the LG G Flex was announced and while we were a bit worried that the device might be limited to a South Korean release, as is with the case of the Samsung Galaxy Round, it turns out that the handset could be making its way onto major US carriers, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Well the good news is that the rumor turned out to be true, at least according to a recent FCC filing which shows the device being compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile’s LTE network. The rumor claims that a Sprint version should be arriving as well, but so far we have not seen Sprint’s version hit the FCC yet, so perhaps it will at a later date.

However for those who don’t want to wait for any of the major carriers to make the official announcement, or would rather not be tied to a contract, you’re in luck because the handset has also gone on sale in the US, at least on Negri Electronics’ website where you can pre-order the handset unlocked for $1,100, although these appear to be imported units, so compatibility with US networks are not necessarily a guarantee. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information, but who’s planning on picking up an LG G Flex upon its release?

Huawei President Confirms Octa-core Ascend P6S

Huawei President Confirms Octa core Ascend P6SMost phones these days are of the quad-core variety, and are usually running either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chipset, NVIDIA’s Tegra 4, or Samsung’s Exynos 5-series (these are usually exclusive for Samsung’s products). However it seems that we might be able to look forward to an octa-core phone from Huawei in the near future, as it was recently confirmed by the company’s president himself. According to Huawei President, Xu Xin Quan, he has recently confirmed that the Ascend P6 will be getting a successor in the form of the Ascend P6S that will feature a true octa-core processor which will be powered by MediaTek.

As it stands Samsung has their own octa-core chipset, but instead of all eight cores used at once, Samsung instead relies on the big.LITTLE technology which essentially swaps between 2 sets of four cores, with one set being a less powerful version that is used to accomplish less demanding tasks, while the more powerful set will be used when more power is needed. No word on pricing or availability of the Huawei Ascend P6S, but with CES 2014 and MWC 2014 taking place early next year, perhaps we will find out more then.

Broken iPhone Components Get Recycled Into Furniture

Broken iPhone Components Get Recycled Into FurnitureGadgets can be pretty fragile and they do break occasionally, especially if one is particularly butter-fingered, but what do we do with our broken gadgets? Do we throw them away? Replace them? Fix it? Well iPhone repair company, Twice Used, is used to coming across broken components during their business and instead of simply throwing away things like broken screens and whatnot, they have decided to do the green thing which is to reuse those broken components by finding a new use for them and giving them a new lease on life.

The image above is one of the many projects that Twice Used has done and as you can see, it involves the screens of the iPhone, which when combined have transformed those components into a rather stylish looking clock. Apart from clocks, they have come up with coffee table ideas, picture frames, and etc. which are all pretty clever. The downside is that there aren’t that many screens to go around which is why the company has launched a Kickstarter campaign in which they are seeking partnerships with other repair companies to take their broken components off their hands. If you’d like to learn more or perhaps pledge your donation, hit up their Kickstarter page for the details!

21% Of Smartphones Shipped In Q3 2013 Are Phablets

21% Of Smartphones Shipped In Q3 2013 Are Phablets

A couple of years ago, Samsung took the wraps off the original Samsung Galaxy Note. The device featured a 5.3” display which at that time was considered to be massive, at least for a phone. The term “phablet” has since been coined (although Samsung wants to change it). Many had expressed their opinion that such devices were a novelty and it would not catch on, but fast forward to 2013, new numbers released by the IDChas suggested that 21% of all smartphones shipped in Q3 2013 were of the phablet variety, indicating and perhaps putting to rest once and for all, that phones with large displays are here to stay.

According to the IDC, their definition of phablet are devices whose displays measure between 5-7” diagonally (Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra’s 6.44” display is cutting it pretty close!), and while they did not mention names, chances are Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3 is leading the way, although 2013 saw many phone manufacturers release some pretty decent devices that could technically fall into the phablet category, such as the LG G2 and the Sony Xperia Z. What do you guys think? Will the number of phablets shipped see an increase year-on-year, or do you think that while devices with large screens are popular, they aren’t for everyone?

AT&T Offering 50% Off Several Devices Priced Under $199

AT&T Offering 50% Off Several Devices Priced Under $199So we reported that AT&T was offering the Nokia Lumia 1520 at $99, which was essentially the price of the device if it were at 50% off. Well it turns out that the deal applies not just to the Lumia 1520, but a handful of other brand new devices as well, such as the Apple iPhone 5c. It turns out that AT&T is offering a 50% deal via its online store, although this 50% deal appears to be limited to its devices that are priced $199 or lower on a two-year contract. What this means is that devices like the iPhone 5c, which is priced at $99 normally, will go for $49 on contract instead, which we reckon seems like a pretty good deal!

Other devices include the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, and the LG G2, just to name a few, all of which have received their 50% discount and are priced at $75, $99, and $49 respectively. AT&T has stated that this will be a limited time offering, but they did not specify how long will this go for as there is no cut-off date. We can only assume it will be until the devices run out of their initial stock before AT&T decides to replenish them, or it could simply be a deal catered for the holiday season, either way if you were holding back due to pricing, perhaps now’s as good a time as any to get your hands on those devices. Hit up AT&T’s online store for the details.

BlackBerry Wants Your Help Designing New BBM Emoticons

BlackBerry Wants Your Help Designing New BBM EmoticonsEmoticons are used daily when we chat over instant messenger, with some messengers coming bundled with their own set of emoticons instead of relying on third-party alternatives. BBM is one of them and the messenger platform has had its own set of emoticons that they have been using for a while now. However if you think that some of the emoticons are dated, or perhaps could use a couple of new ones since the old ones don’t really express how you feel, you’re in luck because BlackBerry is now calling for users to submit their ideas for new BBM emoticons!

According to the post on Facebook, BlackBerry is asking users to submit their ideas by leaving a detailed description of what they have in mind in a message replying to the post. Unfortunately it does not look like they’re accepting files at the moment, so graphic designers will have to describe what it is they have in mind. If you don’t have an idea of your own, BlackBerry has suggested that you like some of the posts whose idea you think makes sense. This deadline for submissions is set for the 20th of November, so if you’d like the chance to see your emoticon idea incorporated into BBM, time to start brainstorming!

Nokia Lumia 929 Rumored For 21st November Release

Nokia Lumia 929 Rumored For 21st November ReleaseIt’s been a couple of weeks since we heard about the Nokia Lumia 929 whose leaked photos suggested that the handset would be arriving on Verizon in the near future. Well thanks to recent rumors, it has now been hinted that perhaps the device will be making its way onto Verizon’s network come 21st of November, which looks to be a day earlier than the Lumia 1520 which is pegged for a 22nd of November release, although given that both handsets are for different networks, we guess it’s a good thing that one will be released earlier for the sake of competition.

We’re not sure how much the Lumia 929 will be priced on Verizon’s network, although given its specs, it should be priced similarly to the Lumia 1520. According to the rumors, the Lumia 929 is said to be a smaller version of the Lumia 1520, in the sense that it will pack a slightly smaller 5” display, but maintains its Full HD 1080p resolution. It will also be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, a 20.7” PureView camera with ZEISS lens, dual-LED flash, and will come with the Nokia Camera app bundled.  Take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully we’ll know the details come 21st of November.

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Being Rolled Out

Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone 8 GDR3 Update Being Rolled Out

The GDR3 update is the latest Windows Phone 8 update that brings a number of improvements and enhancements. This update has already been rolled out for a few WP8 devices, and now Samsung’s flagship device is finally receiving it. That’s right, Samsung ATIV S, which is the only flagship Windows Phone 8 device from the Korean manufacturer, is now receiving the WP8 GDR3 update.

The biggest improvement that GDR3 brings is support for 1080p displays and faster processors such as the quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 800. Users won’t be able to make use of this support unless they buy a Windows Phone device that actually has those things, Nokia has a new device out that has a 1080p display. Apart from that, the GDR3 update brings features such as a new driving mode, option to use Wi-Fi for setting up a device, ability to close apps from the multitasking screen as well as the ability to lock orientation of the display to portrait or landscape mode. The update also lets users select custom ringtones for a wide variety of items such as instant messages and calls or texts from certain contacts. Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for Samsung ATIV S is being rolled out in phases, so it might take a while before the update becomes available in your particular region.

Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 XXUEMK4 Build Leaked

Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 XXUEMK4 Build Leaked

It was reported earlier this week that Samsung may start rolling out the Android 4.3 update for Galaxy Note 2 in the near future. Apparently the final build has already reached Samsung service centers, which might mean that an OTA update release just might be around the corner. While Samsung hasn’t released the update as yet, the Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 XXUEMK4 build has leaked online. November 10th is the build date. This test build is said to be pretty close to the final build that’s still expected to be released soon.

It is said that this is one of the final builds and that nothing major will be included in the future builds except bug fixes and performance improvements. The update brings a number of changes, such as a new user interface that’s quite similar to the Galaxy Note 3. A number of features have been ported over from the Note 3 as well. Samsung Wallet and Samsung Knox enterprise security suite are also present on Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 XXUEMK4 build. Flashing this firmware build won’t void your warranty but do keep in mind that this isn’t an official release from Samsung. Full changelog and download link for Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.3 leaked build is available at the leak source.
