Upcoming Nokia Phones Expected To Get Siri-like Functionality, New Imaging Flagship In The Works [Rumor]

Upcoming Nokia Phones Expected To Get Siri like Functionality, New Imaging Flagship In The Works [Rumor]The other day we reported that a bunch of Nokia codenames had leaked, suggesting that we had a few more devices that we could expect from Nokia before they were officially bought up by Microsoft. Well the last we heard, some of those devices had their features revealed, such as Goldfinger which supposedly will introduce the “3D Touch” technology which basically allows users to interact with the phone without having to actually touch the display. Now thanks to @evleaks, we have additional details about the upcoming devices, although we’re not sure which particular device these features correspond to.

In any case according to @evleaks, it has been suggested that one of the devices will feature a Siri-like assistant, which is essentially a voice assistant software that allows users to perform tasks on their device by telling it vocally, such as setting an alarm, reading out a message, searching for things on the web and etc. The other rumor claims that another one of those handsets is expected to be Nokia’s next imaging flagship handset, which at the moment is the Nokia Lumia 1020. We have heard how a certain upcoming Lumia 1820 could feature a Lytro-like camera, so it certainly corroborates what we’ve been hearing lately. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.

Nokia Black update to add Bluetooth LE across entire WP8 Lumia range

Bluetooth low energy compatibility arrived on select Nokia Lumia models (520, 620, 625 and 720) through the Amber update, but now it’s making its way to the rest of the line. A new FAQ entry on Espoo’s website has confirmed that the feature will come to all devices in the range (even the more high-end ones) via the upcoming Lumia Black update. The Bluetooth 4.0 mode mode uses less power than traditional Bluetooth data connections, and its arrival will allow all Lumias to connect with accessories and other gadgets that use the technology exclusively. Nokia has yet to reveal when Black will be released, but we’ll update you faster than a Bluetooth transfer as soon as we find out.

FCC Speed Test Debuts On Google Play Store

FCC Speed Test Debuts On Google Play StoreThe Google Play Store is host to many an interesting piece of software or app, and most of the time, you will find that one app is far more useful than the others. For those who have heard about the FCC Speed Test, we are pleased to say that this particular app has already appeared on the Google Play Store today, which will be kind of similar in nature to the Speedtest.net app. I guess having some kind of variety is always a good thing, don’t you think so? After all, with Speedtest.net being a staple on the app market for some time already, it is nice to see the FCC come up with an alternative for the masses. The FCC Speed Test will rely on information that has been collected via the app, where this information will then help it hunt down select patterns as it builds out a “map of mobile broadband” that will span through multiple states.

How about privacy concerns, and how will the FCC address them? The FCC has mentioned that “privacy is paramount,” which is why they will ensure that “significant measures” will be taken so that it will be nigh impossible to identify the volunteers who use the app. With the FCC Speed Test app, you will gain privy to real time performance data and historical records, in addition to participating in the FCC’s Measuring Broadband America program. I wonder what is the impact on your device’s battery life when you run the FCC Speed Test app all day long in the background. [FCC Speed Test App]

BlackBerry OS 10.2.1.1055 For Z10 And Z30 Leaked

BlackBerry OS 10.2.1.1055 For Z10 And Z30 LeakedFour days back, we did talk about BlackBerry 10.2.1 purported screenshots that dropped hints concerning Google Play Store access. Well, it seems that the BlackBerry OS 10.2.1.1055 has been leaked in its entirety, where it will cater for two different models of smartphones from the Canadian company – namely the BlackBerry Z10 and the BlackBerry Z30. So far, there was a similar operating system for the BlackBerry Q10 and BlackBerry Q5, but it was not the same case for the Z versions which did not feature radios or autoloaders. Good thing that with the leaked version of the BlackBerry OS 10.2.1.1055, all of that would have changed – and for the better, I might add.

Do expect a bunch of new updates to accompany the BlackBerry OS 10.2.1.1055 leak, where one of them would also mean you can down load APK files directly onto the device without having to walk through a tightrope. Needless to say, one should always pay extra attention and be careful with such updates especially since this is a leak, so it would be highly advisable for you to perform a full backup of your device via BlackBerry Link prior to the installation of the operating system. After all, you can never quite tell just when will Murhpy strike, can you?

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler tells carriers to get on board with his plan to let people unlock their phones… or else

Congress, the White House and the FCC’s new chairman Tom Wheeler have all come out in favor of setting our phones free, but the telcos who can actually grant our handsets liberty have been slow to heed the governmental call. Because of that, Wheeler sent a veiled threat letter to the CTIA imploring it to amend its Consumer Code to include a policy ensuring our rights to get our phones unlocked once we’re off contract. Apparently, the FCC has been working with the CTIA for eight months to craft a policy that requires telcos to:

    • provide a clear, concise and readily accessible policy on unlocking
    • unlock mobile devices for legitimate owners of those devices once their service contract has been fulfilled
    • notify customers when their devices are eligible to be unlocked and/or automatically unlock those devices for free
    • unlock devices or provide an explanation of a denial of any unlock requests within two days
    • unlock devices for military service men and women upon deployment

The two sides are in agreement with four of the five requirements, with the only sticking point being the bit about service providers having to notify us when our devices are eligible to be unlocked. Tom Wheeler, however, isn’t willing to see The Wireless Association’s side of things because “absent the consumer’s right to be informed about unlocking eligibility, any voluntary program would be a hollow shell.” Furthermore, he wants the new unlock policy put in place before the holidays this year, whether by the CTIA’s voluntary or the FCC’s regulatory action. Looks like we’ll be getting phone freedom for Christmas this year. We like the sound of that.

Samsung Rumored To Launch Device With Wraparound Display In 2014

Samsung Rumored To Launch Device With Wraparound Display In 2014So we know that Samsung has plans for curved/flexible displays for smartphones in the future, and the first of what’s to come came in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Round. While completely foldable displays are expected to make its debut in 2015, the folks at Bloomberg are reporting that according to their sources, it has been suggested that Samsung could be looking to launch a device with a wraparound screen come 2014.

We’re not sure what sort of features or functions this wraparound display will have, but supposedly it will allow users to quickly check on messages and notifications without having to look at the phone’s screen face on, kind of like the Galaxy Round which can be “tipped” towards you. This alleged device will make use of Samsung’s Youm technology that was showcased at CES 2013 earlier this year. No word on when this alleged device will make its debut, but take it with a grain of salt for now and hopefully more details about this device will emerge in the near future. In the meantime what do you guys think? Does this sound like a device you might be interested in, or is the concept of flexible displays still somewhat novel?

FCC launches speed test app for Android, looks to collect mobile broadband performance data

As expected, the FCC has launched a Speed Test app that measures mobile broadband performance for Android devices. Available as a free download from Google Play, the app runs periodically in the background and performs tests when you aren’t using your handset. There is a manual test option, for those of you steeped in the ways of Speedtest.net.

According to the FCC, the app is a “first step towards evaluating mobile broadband network performance, arming consumers with information to make fact-based, informed decisions about their wireless providers.” In practice, data gathered from FCC Speed Test will help build out visualizations and maps that compare speeds and technologies across the country. Android users can hit up the Google Play link below to try it out. iPhone users, meanwhile, will have to wait till early next year; the FCC says it will submit an iOS version by late 2014.

LG Reportedly Wanted Nexus 5 To Be Called Nexus G

LG Reportedly Wanted Nexus 5 To Be Called Nexus G

For the past few years, Google hasn’t highlighted manufacturers of its Nexus devices in their monikers. Take the Nexus S for example which came out in 2010, it was manufactured by Samsung and the “S” was an obvious reference to the manufacturer’s Galaxy S line. Now, even in the Play Store, device monikers don’t hint at their makers, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the Nexus 5 are fine examples. Google may have its own reasons of doing this, but apparently LG wanted it shift from this tradition. Chosun libo, a major newspaper based in South Korea, claims that LG wanted that the Nexus 5 be called the Nexus G, an obvious reference to its “G” line of devices.

LG changed its own naming policy for its premium devices this year, dropping the “Optimus” moniker in favour of the alphabet G. Since then, it has unveiled devices like the LG G2, G Pad and the G Flex. Perhaps the company might have thought that since Google has previously allowed Samsung to brand Nexus devices, the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S to be precise, perhaps it might extend the same courtesy to it. The newspaper claims that while LG did discuss the idea with Google, the company denied and went ahead with the Nexus 5. The rest, as they say, is history.

    Apple Releases iOS 7.0.4

    Apple Releases iOS 7.0.4

It was rumored last week that Apple might release an incremental iOS 7 firmware update in the near future. Web traffic from devices running iOS 7.0.4 started increasing last week, presumably because the update was being tested by Apple’s employees prior to its release. Today, Apple has released iOS 7.0.4, its an incremental update which does not bring any major features. It only brings a few bug fixes.

The official release notes state that this update, iOS 7.0.4 build 11B554a, comes with “bug fixes and improvements.” It also brings a fix for an issue that caused FaceTime calls to fail for some users. This update is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. All smartphones from iPhone 4 right up to iPhone 5s are covered, and so are all tablets from iPad 2 to the recently released iPad Air. iPad mini and the Retina iPad mini are compatible with this update as well, and the fourth generation and fifth generation iPod touch models are included too. Apple releases the updates over-the-air, so they can be downloaded and installed right on the device itself. No need to connect to a computer, simply head to the Settings app and go to the Software Update section. IOS 7.0.4 weighs in at 37.6MB.

Weak iPhone 5c Sales Expected In Q4, 2013

Weak iPhone 5c Sales Expected In Q4, 2013

Back when Apple hadn’t unveiled its two new iPhones, it was believed that the low-cost iPhone 5c might end up eating into the margins of the relatively expensive iPhone 5s, particularly in markets like India and China. This isn’t the case though, the iPhone 5c hasn’t performed as well as everyone believed it would in those markets primarily because its not as competitively priced as many thought it would be. There has already been a lot of talk about iPhone 5c sales being weak, and its expected to remain weak throughout the fourth quarter of this year. TrendForce estimates that the iPhone 5c will account for 24 percent of the total iPhones shipped during this quarter, whereas iPhone 5s sales are expected to account for almost 70 percent of all iPhone sales.

The firm’s recent research report estimates that Apple shipped 33.8 million units of the iPhone in Q3, 2013, with the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c making up for more than 50 percent of that combined. It also claims that Apple has adjusted the iPhone 5c’s Q4 shipments down by 11 million units, which seems plausible as there have already been a lot of rumors about Apple cutting down production of the iPhone 5c. TrendForce expects Apple to ship 46 million units of the iPhone in this quarter, resulting in a 2.2 percent year-over-year increase.
