Project Ara Demonstrated In Video

Google has shed more light concerning the Project Ara modular smartphone, despite the very first Ara Developers Conference being set to happen this coming April 15th. What you see above happens to be a video of the team behind the project, where it clearly lets the world know in no uncertain terms on how the smartphone of the future will stay together, in addition to the individual modules’ ability to arrive in different external textures and styles.

A trio of endoskeletons were shown in the video too, if you are eagle eyed enough to notice those renders. These endoskeletons will vary from one to another when it comes to pricing and capacity. For instance, the smallest of the lot is tipped to carry a $50 price tag thereabouts with at least the ability to hold half a dozen modules, while the mid-sized version should be able to tote eight or so, and the phablet-sized version in all probability will carry a minimum of nine modules.

The modules in question that will carry different items such as processors, storage, camera sensors, and others, will remain in place within the aforementioned endoskeleton thanks to an electro-permanent magnet. There will be an electrical current that will change the magnetic properties of a permanent magnet so that the module will remain stuck there even when there is no power available. Pretty neat, eh?

Atmel, Corning Work On Super Thin Capacitive Touchscreens

Atmel, Corning Work On Super Thin Capacitive Touchscreens Thin is in, and it does look as though thin is set to stay, too. At the very least, this is the impression that we have from all of the smartphones and tablets that have been released over the past few years. Having said that, Corning (of Gorilla Glass fame) and Atmel have worked together on a new generation of ultra-thin capacitive touchscreens that will not sacrifice form over function – this very same touchscreen will also boast of superior multi-touch performance, where it is meant for next-generation applications.

This particular collaboration would merge Atmel XSense flexible touch sensors with 0.4mm damage-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass, where the two of them work hand-in-hand to deliver outstanding capacitive touch performance despite having a thinner flat or curved cover glass. It is because of the unique circuit design of XSense that paves the way for design engineers to draw up ever narrower device borders, so that the user would be able to enjoy a more optimal viewing area. Smartphones and tablets look set to be the immediate beneficiaries from such an arrangement, but we would like to see it applied in other devices such as notebooks, too. What do you think of this new touchscreen display?

This particular beta has received yet another update this week, although it has been renamed to Windows App Studio. With this new name, there is also a new way to develop an app that will play nice with both operating systems.

AT&T Joins The Party, Offers BlackBerry Deal Of Their Own

AT&T Joins The Party, Offers BlackBerry Deal Of Their OwnThey say that sharks come when they smell blood in the water and it seems that is what AT&T has done in the wake of BlackBerry and T-Mobile’s licensing agreement ending. According to a report from Rimarkable, it seems that AT&T will be offering customers a good deal to make them switch to their network, presumably from T-Mobile’s network where the carrier will no longer be offering BlackBerry handsets in the future.

According to the deal, customers switching to AT&T’s network will qualify for a new BlackBerry handset for a $0 downpayment and no annual service contract with AT&T next. Alternatively they also welcome customers to bring their own devices or purchase a new device on a traditional contract if that is what they prefer. (more…)

Flipboard For Windows Phone Spotted At BUILDThe Flipboard app was originally designed for iOS devices in mind and unlike other apps that curates the news, Flipboard was designed to look like a magazine which gave it a more colorful and more interesting way of consuming news.

It was later released onto Android and was first launched as an exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S3, although the leaked APK basically put it up for grabs with anyone with a Android device. A release for Windows Phone has yet to be made but presumably it could be soon, thanks to a recent sighting at Microsoft’s BUILD conference. (more…)
