White House Reportedly Testing Non-BlackBerry Devices For Use

White House Reportedly Testing Non BlackBerry Devices For UseBlackBerry isn’t doing so hot at the moment, but perhaps that might change with the release of the BlackBerry Z3 and the BlackBerry Q20, but for now things are definitely not looking up for the Canadian company.

However if there was one thing that they could count on was use of BlackBerry smartphones in government agencies, but even that seems to be going away. In fact recently according to reports, it has been suggested that the White House is trialing phones from Samsung and LG as a way to wean themselves and possibly the President off BlackBerry devices. Motorola Moto 360 Smartwatch, presented by Jim Wicks, Design Chief at Motorola

Two days ago, Motorola announced the Moto 360, its smartwatch powered by Android Wear. Except for the few pictures and the few Android Wear functions that Google and Motorola described in their official blog posts, we do not know much about the exact specifications. We were invited yesterday to a hangout with Jim Wicks, CVP Consumer Experience design at Motorola and we were hoping to learn a little more.

“TIME WAS THE INSPIRATION”   Unfortunately, except for the concept and the ideas behind the round shape and the Android Wear interface, he did not share the main information we are all waiting for: no pricing, no exact release date, no battery life, no display type, no processor type no resolution were provided.

We learned a few things though: the round interface is standard in Android Wear, the SDK for a choice of a square or a round interface, the Moto 360 will be compatible with Android 4.3+ devices, it will probably only feature wireless charging or a new type of connector-less charging system, the casing is made of stainless steel with a brushed finish and a gloss finish on the edges and you will be able to see the time constantly.

Last but not least, time was the inspiration for the round shape and since 80% of the traditional watches sold in the world are round (according to Jim Wicks), we predict that Android Wear will power watches made by traditional manufacturers in the future. To learn more details about what Jim Wicks had to say about the Moto 360, read the full article.

Possible BlackBerry Windermere 5-Inch Display Component Leaked

Possible BlackBerry Windermere 5 Inch Display Component LeakedAccording to a rumor we caught wind of back in February, there was talk about BlackBerry working on a device called the “Windermere”. The device itself look pretty standard, although it did have an odd screen aspect ratio, but what made it stand out was the rumors that the keyboard could feature gesture controls.

What this means is that users will be able to swipe on the physical keyboard to perfect certain actions, such as bring up special characters, switch languages, and so on. In any case thanks to a recent leak, it seems like what we might be looking at in the image above could be the display for the BlackBerry Windermere. (more…)

Nokia Lumia 930 And 630 Could Be Announced At BUILD [Rumor]

Nokia Lumia 930 And 630 Could Be Announced At BUILD [Rumor]Microsoft’s BUILD 2014 conference is scheduled to take place between the 2nd of April to the 4th of April. During the event, it is speculated that perhaps Windows Phone 8.1 could be announced, but according to MyNokiaBlog, they are suggesting that not only could Windows Phone 8.1 be announced, but it is possible that the Nokia Lumia 930 and 630 could be announced as well.

They cite a “trusted source” who claims that Microsoft/Nokia could be using the event to launch new Windows Phone handsets. This isn’t too surprising given that during MWC 2014, Nokia did not announce any new Windows Phone handsets. Instead the Finnish company chose to focus their announcements on their Nokia X series of Android handsets as well as some new Asha phones. (more…)

FireChat App Lets People Message Without Cellular Or Internet Coverage

FireChat App Lets People Message Without Cellular Or Internet Coverage

There used to be a time when cellphones were essentially useless if there was no cellular coverage. There was no alternative mode of communication, so the only other purpose they could serve back then was acting as a paperweight. This has dramatically changed over the last decade. Through the internet, one can now make video and voice calls, not to mention send instant messages and emails. Mobile communication is no longer solely dependant upon cellular network. But what if you were in a situation where there’s no cellular and no internet?

As horrifying as that may sound, there’s still a way to keep in touch, albeit only with the people around you. FireChat utilizes iOS 7′s Multipeer Connectivity Framework to enable offline chatting. Through the app, users can also share photos and participate in group chats. It won’t have a major impact on battery consumption and there are no passwords or logins to remember.

Possible use cases would be at the beach or in the subway, perhaps even at a big game or a massive trade show, places where connectivity can often be a problem. FireChat for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store. Offline chat works best when the recipients are within 10 meters of your location. And even if it doesn’t work, you can always try shouting.

Samsung Galaxy S5 ART Support Possible

Samsung Galaxy S5 ART Support Possible

Android 4.4 KitKat brought a major new feature that most users might not have come across yet. It came with a new runtime called ART or simply, Android Runtime. Since the early days Android has relied upon the default Dalvik runtime. Even though ART is currently in an experimental stage, the primary aim is to tweak it further to enhance app performance even more. A new image has surfaced online hinting at the possibility of Galaxy S5 ART support.

While ART is a permanent fixture in Android 4.4, many manufacturers such as Samsung chose not to include it in the KitKat update that they rolled out for existing devices. So even though the devices were updated to KitKat, they didn’t quite offer the performance bump that Android Runtime brings. Which is why it is much more plausible for the Galaxy S5 to come with ART support, since Samsung would have developed its firmware from the ground up.

In Dalvik runtime, whenever an app is launched, a part of its code required for its execution is immediately compiled into machine code. Whereas on ART, the required code is compiled and stored on the device itself during installation. This results in improved app launch times, and in some cases it might even improve battery life.

Most app developers have already started adding ART support to their apps and games. So if Galaxy S5 ART support really exists, its bound to make a lot of people happy. Users can currently choose between the Dalvik and ART runtimes on their device, though its expected that ART will become the default runtime in the next major Android update.
