Diamond Multimedia intros AMP2000 Android settop box, availability coming later this year

It’s been quite a few months since Diamond Multimedia announced it’s AMP1000 set-top box, so the company likely figured there was no better better time and place than CES 2013 to release its latest Android-based media offering. With the AMP2000, the multifarious company joins the likes of Roku and FAVI in the powered-by-Google streaming race — in which it’ll give potential users the ability to wirelessly view files on any HDMI-ready TV set, as well as offering support for applications like Hulu Plus and Netflix. Diamond Multimedia notes the AMP2000 comes “with Google TV,” though it doesn’t go into much more detail, and thus it’s quite unclear whether this means you get the actual Google TV experience — you know, the one found on devices such as that Vizio Co-Star — or if it’s something a bit more like Always Innovating’s HDMI Android dongle. Speaking of the lack of details, mum’s the word on how much the AMP2000 will run you when it ships “sometime in March or April,” but we can only imagine it to be around the same price as other similar offerings.

Corsair outs Voyager Air with WiFi storage, NAS, USB 3.0 and repeater all in one

Corsair launches Voyager Air with wireless storage, NAS, USB 30 and WiFi repeater in one

Corsair is very much associated with devices that need a physical connection to work, whether they’re thumb drives or memory sticks. It’s looking to cut the cord in style through its new Voyager Air. You’ll have seen some of what it does with a predecessor like Kingston’s Wi-Drive, with media streaming to Android and iOS devices, a WiFi repeater mode and USB 3.0 support, but Corsair’s drive goes the extra mile by serving as network attached storage through a gigabit Ethernet link. The 7-hour battery life when completely wireless certainly helps its prospects, at least among its immediate rivals. Corsair plans to ship the Voyager Air by early February in a 500GB version for $199 and 1TB for $229 versions; either price sounds reasonable for a home media server that ultimately doesn’t have to stay at home.

Slingboxes get My Media syncing to USB, Companion iPad app for at-home viewing

Slingboxes get My Media syncing for USB storage, Companion second screen app for iPad

The Slingbox news hasn’t stopped just because Dish made its big splash. An update to the Slingbox 500 at first, and the 350 later this year, adds a local My Media sync component that lets Android or iOS users offload photos or videos to a USB drive attached to the Slingbox — they just have to stream their content instead of chewing up their mobile device storage. Both Slingbox 350 and 500 owners are also promised the new Slingbox Companion app you see above. As long as they’re toting at least an iPad 2, they can find shows, share their tastes through social networks and use their tablet as a remote without the usual live video of the SlingPlayer app. My Media is arriving first, both as a firmware update and a new SlingPlayer release, in the weeks ahead. Would-be Companion users will need to wait until the app hits iPads in the spring.

Private WiFi VPN App Now Available For Mobile Devices

private wifi app Private WiFi VPN App Now Available For Mobile Devices[CES 2013] For the less discerning user, finding free public WiFi while in a shopping mall or at a cafe or even on public transportation is a great way to cut down on your mobile internet’s bandwidth usage, but at the same time it should be noted that by using public WiFi, it is possible for hackers to intercept the information being transmitted, meaning that logging into your bank account and emails while using public WiFi might not necessarily be the best idea. With that being said, Private Communications has announced that their Private WiFi VPN has now made its way onto mobile devices. (more…)

Sony VAIO T Series Updated With Touchscreen Option

T13 14 15 Silver Group shot Sony VAIO T Series Updated With Touchscreen Option[CES 2013] Thanks to the introduction of Windows 8, we are starting to see more computers come as a hybrid of sorts, allowing users to input commands the traditional way (i.e. keyboard and mouse), but also via a touchscreen display. Dell updates Inspiron R laptops for 2013

dell Inspiron 15R 5521 Dell updates Inspiron R laptops for 2013[CES 2013] One of the major pet peeves about using a laptop to work on the go is the fact that you can’t go long without plugging it into a power socket. Dell’s answer to this problem has been its Inspiron R laptop series: laptops with impressive battery life. Well, it looks like the company has decided to upgrade them for this year. While still maintaining its optical drive, Dell has managed to reduce the size of the Inspiron R to almost 1” thick, a huge difference from last year’s model.

What else is new? We’ve now got the option to purchase the Inspiron R with a touchscreen – which makes sense, since it’ll be running on Windows 8. However, for those who don’t want to spend the extra money, the extra large trackpad should do the job. The Inspiron R can also be powered by a variety of Intel processors (Celeron, Core etc) and even optional discrete graphics for those who want to game. The variety of customizable features and display sizes means there’s bound to be something for everyone.

No word on pricing or a release date at this time of writing, but expect to find out more in the near future.

Alcatel One Touch Tab7 And Tab7 HD Budget Tablets Revealed

ONE TOUCH Tab 7 HD Alcatel One Touch Tab7 And Tab7 HD Budget Tablets Revealed[CES 2013] Just like they did with the One Touch EVO7 and EVO7 HD, Alcatel has announced the One Touch Tab7 and Tab7 HD, with the main difference being in the display resolution, processor and its camera features. Starting with the One Touch Tab7 HD, this tablet will come with a 7” HD display with a resolution of 1280×800. It will be powered by a dual-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz and will be accompanied by 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 8GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, a 2MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. Available in Q3 2013 for the US market, the One Touch Tab7 HD will be priced at around $149, making this an affordable solution for those shopping for an Android tablet.

However if you’re looking for an even cheaper alternative, the One Touch Evo7 priced at $129 could be the answer. Powered by a 1GHz single-core processor with only 4GB of internal storage by default (still expandable via microSD), the Tab7 will only come with a VGA front-facing camera and a display resolution of a rather low 1024×600. The only consolation so far would be the fact that it run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, unlike the One Touch EVO7 which only comes with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Harman BMW Premium Infotainment System Unveiled

[CES 2013] I guess it would make plenty of sense when you shack up two premium brands together – after all, to have something like a pristine Ferrari parked in a junkyard does not make much sense, so we are not too surprised to see Bavarian automaker BMW team up with Harman, the premium global audio and infotainment group. Harman will deliver what they call as the “core” of the BMW “ConnectedDrive” experience, thanks to its premium infotainment unit that offers a seamless experience into the vehicle by merging wireless connectivity, enhanced navigation and productivity applications, turning your ride into a mobile office without compromising on safety. Marvell Powers The Google TV Experience

Hisense Pulse 640x438 Marvell Powers The Google TV Experience

At CES 2013, Marvel is showing a number of new Google TV devices powered by its Marvell Armada 1500 Series which was introduced last year with Google TV 2.0. Among the notable new clients (called “design-wins” in industry lingo), we’ve spotted ASUS, Netgear, Hisense and TCL: they are not really small-time manufacturers, so we can expect Google TV to be promoted like it’s never been before.

We’ve covered the Neo TV Prime in another post, but in this particular line-up of Google TV boxes, we find the ASUS Qube design to be particularly interesting and would love to see it next to a TV. We’ve talked to Weili Dai, Co-Founder of Marvell, about CES 2013, and she told us that all the technology elements are now in place for Google TV (and smart screens in general) to take off, big time. vizio soundbars ces 2013 Vizio 2013 Sound BarVizio has made a successful entry in the sound bar market and it intends to continue this trend for 2013. I have to admit the ratio between price and sound quality is very good. At CES, the company has laid out its course of action for 2013: first of all, all the sound bars will have a unified design. This is a change from the 2012 editions, and a welcome one in my opinion. While it may not make a huge difference in your living room, having a design consistency is great for Vizio’s brand and will allow the company to focus on delivering sound quality instead of managing more industrial designs.
