Alcatel One Touch Tab8 HD 8” Tablet Unveiled

ONE TOUCH Tab 8 HD Alcatel One Touch Tab8 HD 8” Tablet Unveiled[CES 2013] Alcatel has unveiled several tablets for CES 2013, but if 7” tablets aren’t your thing and you’re looking for something a little bigger, then maybe the One Touch Tab8 HD might be worth checking out. Featuring an 8” IPS display with a resolution of 1024×768, the Tab8 HD will be powered by a dual-core 1.6GHz processor with 1GB of RAM accompanying it.

It will also come with 8GB of NAND flash memory which can be expanded via microSD, a 2MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera and will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. If all of this sounds familiar, it’s because Alcatel announced the One Touch Tab7 HD which shares similar specs save for the display size.

It’s not the most powerful Android tablet we’ve seen and in all honesty there are better tablets that can be had for its price, but if you think that paying $179 is justifiable for a tablet of this caliber, then you might be interested to learn that the Alcatel One Touch Tab8 HD will be available in the US come Q3 2013.

Dell refreshes its mainstream Inspiron R laptops with optional touchscreens

Dell refreshes its mainstream Inspiron R laptops with optional touchscreens

So far at CES, Dell has announced that its XPS 13 Ultrabook will finally get a higher-res screen. Now it’s shifting its attention to the lower end: the company just refreshed its mainstream Inspiron R line with optional touchscreens and a slimmed-down form factor. All told, the line includes three screen sizes: 14, 15 and 17 inches. Now that they’ve all gotten a bit of a makeover, the smaller two measure about an inch thick and weigh in at less than five pounds. Still, they’re all just thick enough to accommodate a tray-loading optical drive, and the 15R and 17R also have enough room for a numpad on the keyboard.

Spec-wise, you can trick them out with Core i7 processors, up to 8GB of RAM, Intel Wireless Display and discrete graphics (either a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT640M or a 2GB AMD Radeon HD 8730M). Still, there’s a considerable gulf between the top-end options and the base specs. Though you can choose a Core i3, i5 or i7 CPU, for instance, they actually start with Celeron. Ditto for storage: you could get 1TB, but you’ll get just 320 gigs at the entry level. The 14R and 15R top out at 1,366 x 768, while the 17-incher comes standard with 1,600 x 900 resolution. 1080p displays are also available for the 15- and 17-inch models. Sounds reasonable to us: these systems are mid-range at best. Speaking of the sort, prices start at $430 for the Inspiron 15R and $500 for the 17R. However, if you want that touchscreen, the prices start at $650 for both the 14R and 15R.

Dell’s Project Ophelia: an Android 4.0 stick that turns any display into a PC

Dell's Project Ophelia an Android 40 stick that turns any display into a PC

Dell Wyse, the company’s cloud services arm, is worried about your security. It’s also thinking that it’s time you didn’t need to drag that laptop wherever you go. As such, it’s working on Project Ophelia, a chunky Android stick that turns any HDTV or monitor into a display. What’s different to devices like FXI’s Cotton Candy, for instance, is that the hardware is a gateway to a cloud server where all of your content lives. Users can play games, display presentations or finish the last few lines of that essay wherever they are. The company isn’t talking about details (or how you’d control such a device), but it’s expecting to have it ready for prime-time by the summer.

NEC revamps its MultiSync lineup with new 24inch IPS monitor

NEC’s MultiSync monitor lineup is well-known for offering a slew of versatile choices — as such, this year’s CES isn’t too bad a time for the Lavie creator to introduce a new member of the family. The newly announced 24-inch LED EA244WMi looks pretty good on paper, boasting a 1920 x 1200 resolution with IPS technology and a 16:10 aspect ratio, plus there’s also built-in speakers four USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, DVI-D, VGA and, similar to that EA231WMi, a DisplayPort. Naturally, NEC has added plenty of its own customization options to the rather adjustable monitor, including ControlSync to help with multi-screen setups, ECO Mode and a “smart” sensing feature which adjusts depending on “ambient light and human sensors.” The EA244WMi will go on sale later this month for $379; in the meantime, we have a press shot gallery after the break to hold you over until the monitor eventually hits shelves.

The camera also comes with built-in WiFi, allowing the transfer of photos to smartphones or tablets, or even social networking sites in a short amount of time. The added GPS feature will allow you to share the location of where you took your photos from as well.
