LG Teases Possible Mobile Device Announcement At CES 2013

Earlier today we reported that come CES 2013, there was a chance that LG could be debuting the Optimus G2 with a Full HD display. While that remains to be seen, a recent video uploaded by LG onto YouTube suggests that LG could be taking advantage of CES to launch a new mobile device, although as to whether that is the Optimus G2 is unclear. What we can tell is that at the very least this looks like a mobile device, and it would seem that it looks more like a smartphone rather than a tablet. Considering that LG launched their new flagship phone, the LG Optimus G not too long ago, could the South Korean company be set to offer up a successor? Then again with its rumored 5.5” display, perhaps LG is catering the Optimus G2 to a different crowd, one that might prefer phablet-sized devices. In any case check out the video above, and be sure to check back with us during CES as we will be on hand and will bring you the latest news as we come across them.

MadCatz teases GameSmart peripherals: hardware that plays nice with multiple devices

MadCatz isn’t ready to divulge all it has in store for CES, but it’s given us a taste of what’s to come by teasing its new GameSmart initiative, which offers an alternative to futzing with a cornucopia of device-specific peripherals. Hardware carrying the GameSmart moniker uses Bluetooth Smart tech to pair with devices ranging from smartphones to tablets — and presumably other Bluetooth-equipped hardware. The firm says it’ll include an app to add functionality to peripherals and it expects the tech will help game developers bridge differences between platforms by offering standardized controllers. Though MadCatz is waiting for CES to pull the curtains back on a raft of GameSmart gamepads, keyboards, mice and headsets, it says the hardware will launch shortly after it’s unveiled.

ViewSonic 84-inch 4K Ultra HD Display Previewed At CES 2013

viewsonic ces ultrahd ViewSonic 84 inch 4K Ultra HD Display Previewed At CES 2013ViewSonic will take the opportunity to preview the 84-inch 4K Ultra HD display when CES 2013 kicks off next week, and of course, just in case you feel that you will not be able to afford such an expensive display by the time it arrives at a store near you, there is always a cheaper alternative, which would be the 32” version of the Ultra HD display. Just like how Full HD displays were all the rage a few CES’ ago, this time around, it would be 4K Ultra HD technology that will take centerstage this time around.

ViewSonic is proud to be one of the first companies to showcase this new 4K Ultra HD technology, thanks to the 32″ VP3280 desktop display. It will definitely appeal to folks like graphic designers, cinematographers and videographers, as this enables them to get closer than ever before to the native pixel resolutions which they are filming with on camera. As for the ordinary man on the street, they will be able to generate their own 4K Ultra HD content thanks to compatible high resolution video cameras.

As for the main event, the ViewSonic 84” two point touch 4K Ultra HD digital sign on the CES show floor is said to extend the possibilities of 4K Ultra HD beyond the cinema environment toward commercial applications such as mapping, GIS, the military and satellite imagery, and other business uses. It is not meant for private use, but rather, to be adopted in commercial markets from this year onwards. [Press Release]

Toyota releases sneak-peek of the Lexus advanced active safety research vehicle

On December 20, Toyota announced that it will show off its advanced active safety research vehicle on January 7, one day before the CES 2013 tech event. To get enthusiasts ready, the company has just released a sneak-peek of the car with promises of more to come during the press event it has scheduled for Monday. You can check out the video after the jump.

The vehicle is designed to “explore the use of autonomous technologies and high-level driver assistance systems” that pertain to Toyota’s Integrated Safety Management Concept. The video is little more than a 5-second tease, but gives us a nice glimpse of the vehicle in all its decked-out charm driving down the road.

Judging by the looks of things, the vehicle is adorned with an autonomous driving system, congruent with the company’s plans to show off that autonomous technology next week. The equipment allows the car to be aware of its surroundings, such as the guard rail seen in the video, and operate accordingly. The vehicle upon which the contraptions are perched is the Lexus LS 600h.

More details will be available on Monday, when Lexus’s Vice President and General Manager Mark Templin will introduce the technology, research, and other information we can’t wait to hear. We’ll be covering CES 2013 next week, and will certainly keep an eye out for the latest information on Toyota’s system. Be sure to check back regularly for the latest updates.

Gorilla Glass 3 To Debut At CES 2013

gg3 Gorilla Glass 3 To Debut At CES 2013[CES 2013] We first heard of Gorilla Glass from Corning some years back, and while it is not shatterproof or could be used to deflect a punch from the Incredible Hulk, Gorilla Glass is said to be far tougher and more rigid than the standard issue display that you find on portable devices such as smartphones, tablets and the like. Well, it seems that Gorilla Glass has received a sequel since then, and at CES 2013, we would be privy to the new generation of super-tough Gorilla Glass that will be formally known as Gorilla Glass 3. How creative, huh? Perhaps all the bananas that the team had eaten during its development had stunted the naming part.

Corning promises “a new glass composition with durability enhancements” which would mean your consumer electronics devices that feature Gorilla Glass 3 will be able to withstand even more abuse than ever before. Well, what is next for Gorilla Glass 4, something that even Wolverine is unable to slice through? [Press Release]

Polaroid unveils Android tablet for kids, will show it off at CES

Polaroid, best known for its beloved instant-film cameras, has unveiled an Android tablet for kids. The slate has a 7-inch display, fun white and blue design, and is crafted to be rugged enough to withstand the endless dangers young children will subject it to. The PTAB750 model tablet will be on display at CES 2013 in the coming days.

The tablet has decent hardware with a 1GHz Cortex A8 and 512MB of RAM. There’s 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, a 2MP rear camera, and 8GB of internal storage space, with an SD card expansion slot. The 7-inch display has a resolution of 800 x 480, and supports multi-touch. The PTAB750 runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and comes pre-loaded with more than 35 full-version apps. It’s priced at $149.99.

The pre-loaded apps include Music Studio, Draw, Kids Cam, and Kids Vids, the last of which is said to help children stream filtered, kid-friendly videos. In addition, apps are filtered via Free Play, which displays only applications that are appropriate for children. In terms of its durability, the PTAB750 has bumpers along its edges to help keep it safe from drops and bumps. Parental controls are integrated, allowing parents or teachers to control what their child can and cannot do.

Polaroid’s President and CEO Scott W. Hardy offered this statement. “Throughout our 75 year history, we’ve been known for creating innovative and easy-to-use products that are fun for all ages. The kids tablet is no exception. It epitomizes the Polaroid brand personality and brings together a host of features that will delight kids and parents alike.” The kid-friendly tablet was named a CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree.

Corning to show off Gorilla Glass 3 at CES 2013

The benefits of having a phone outfitted with Corning Gorilla Glass are already well known, but the company is about to kick it up a notch with a new iteration of the tough-as-nails glass. That’s right – Corning has an all new version of Gorilla Glass ready for the new year, and it will be making its debut at CES 2013. As you might imagine, Gorilla Glass 3 offers a number of improvements over its predecessor, with Corning boasting some particularly impressive statistics to CNET.

gg3prgraphics113012-11-540x417

Gorilla Glass 3 is not only the thinnest iteration yet, but it’s also Corning’s most durable. Of course, it isn’t going to do much if your device takes a spill onto a hard surface like concrete, but it’ll do quite a bit to keep your display scratch-free. That’s especially handy considering that scratches inevitably happen with everyday use, so if Gorilla Glass 3 can cut down on the frequency of those scratches even more than Gorilla Glass 2 did, then we have a lot to look forward to.

One benefit of making the glass thinner is that your display will be sharper, which is always welcome. Corning says that it has improved Gorilla Glass on a molecular level, improvements which the company is calling Native Damage Resistance. With everything tallied up, Corning says that Gorilla Glass 3 will be three times stronger than Gorilla Glass 2, 40% better at preventing scratches and hiding the ones that do show up on your screen, and 50% stronger once the display becomes flawed. That’s especially important, since deep scratches can lead to shattering later on.

Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing devices outfitted with Gorilla Glass 3 for a little while. Corning says that there won’t be any Gorilla Glass 3 devices available to check out at CES 2013, and they actually won’t begin popping until a couple of months after the show wraps. We’ll see if we can’t spend a little time with Gorilla Glass 3 at CES, but in the meantime, be sure to check out our hands-on with Gorilla Glass 2 for a bit of a refresher.
