Razer Sabertooth Xbox 360 controller ups the ante on tourney gaming, we go handson

Razer’s Onza Xbox 360 controller is very, very nice. Sure, it’s got an unbelievably long, non-detachable wire sticking out of it, but its build quality is top notch and its ultra-clicky face buttons are a pleasure to use. In the company’s second Xbox 360 controller — the Sabertooth — Razer’s focusing on the tournament gaming crowd rather than simply outfitting its Onza with “Tournament Edition” specs. That aside, the Sabertooth retains the quality we’ve come to expect from Razer products. Oh, and that crazy long wire is thankfully detachable!

It’s apparent from first glance that the Sabertooth is intended as such, given the six extra (programmable) buttons found on the shoulders and back of the controller, and the tiny OLED screen found along the bottom (allowing for the programming of said buttons). Considering that a regular Xbox 360 controller comprises 12 (!!) buttons not counting the d-pad, adding another six and an OLED screen is … intense, to say the least. While we didn’t have occasion to test the programmability, we can definitively say that the Sabertooth’s other functions are just as solid as with the Onza. The analog sticks are as good or better than a standard Xbox 360 controller, the d-pad is an improvement over the Onza (which was already an improvement over the dismal d-pad included on most Xbox 360 controllers), and the triggers / shoulder buttons are appropriately springy and responsive. There’s even a silly backlight for several face buttons, should you be playing video games in a cave (you can opt to turn off the backlight, too — we certainly did).

Samsung Series 7 Chronos 640x426 Samsung Series 7 Chronos Laptop[CES 2013] Here is the Samsung Series 7 Chronos, a line of laptops that Samsung intends to present next week at CES 2013. The Samsung Series 7 is aimed at the professional market, an area where Samsung says it has expended in 2012 (according to David Song, Senior Vice President of IT & Mobile Communications at Samsung Electronics) and that it wants to accelerate in 2013.

The first Samsung Series 7 laptop for 2013 is the Samsung Chronos 770Z5E, a 15.6″ laptop with a full HD (1920×1080) 10-point multi-touch display. The specifications make it a dream 15.6″ Windows 8 laptop. In terms of industrial design, Samsung has chosen a full-aluminum body to increase the durability (a key decision factor for enterprises), but this has an influence of the weight which tops 5.18lbs which is not the lightest in the 15.4″ segment, but which remains competitive in the 15.4 touch-screen segment.

Samsung unveils the Series 7 Ultra, refreshes the Series 7 Chronos with a slimmer design

Samsung unveils the Series 7 Ultra, refreshes the Series 7 Chronos with a slimmer design

We’ve gotta hand it to Samsung: announcing new products before CES is a clever way of grabbing our undivided attention. With days to go before the show officially kicks off, the outfit’s already unveiled some new monitors, and put out teasers for at least three other items. Now the company’s PC division is getting a headstart as well: Samsung just added two notebooks to its high-performance Series 7 family of products. These include the Series 7 Ultra, a 13-inch Ultrabook, as well as a refreshed Series 7 Chronos with AMD graphics.

Starting with the Ultra (pictured above), this is the first Ultrabook in the Series 7 family, which emphasizes hearty performance more than other PCs in Samsung’s lineup. It’ll be available in two versions, one with a touchscreen and one without, but even then, you’ll find variants with different processors (Core i5 or i7) and different storage capacities (128GB or 256GB). Whichever configuration you choose, though, you’ll get a 350-nit, 1080p display, up to 16GB of RAM (!), a backlit keyboard, JBL speakers and a 1GB AMD HD8570M GPU. Other specs include three USB ports (two 2.0, one 3.0), HDMI, Ethernet, mini-VGA, a memory card reader and a battery rated for up to eight hours (we’re assuming that’s the non-touch model).

As for the new Series 7 Chronos, Samsung actually just teased it in a video earlier today. Based on that, we already knew the 15-inch version would be refreshed with AMD’s new AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU, whose RAMaccelerator technology claims to increase browsing and general application speeds by up to 150 percent. At the same time, Samsung’s also given the chassis a makeover so that it’s now thinner than the last-gen model (0.82 inches thick versus 0.94). Other than that, it packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU, a 300-nit, 1080p display, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, an optional touchscreen, a backlit keyboard, JBL speakers and 11 hours of battery life (in theory, anyway).

In any case, Samsung hasn’t announced pricing or availability for either of these models, but you can bet your Nexus 10 we’ll be getting hands-on at CES next week. Until then, we’ve slipped a photo of the Chronos after the break. You know, because we can play the teaser game too.

Samsung Refreshing Series 7 Chronos With New GPU, HD Display

It was back in 2011 when Samsung announced its Series 7 Chronos notebook that combined a nice, brushed metal exterior with an even nice interior stuff with an AMD Radeon HD670M, 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 750GB HDD to offer quite the impressive package.

This year, Samsung is looking to refresh its Series 7 Chronos with better hardware including an AMD Radeon HD8870M GPU, a full 1920×1080 HD display, JBL stereo speakers and RAMaccelerator, which promises to load applications 50 percent faster.

That’s all we have at this time for the upcoming refresh of the Samsung Series 7 Chronos. That and the CGI-tastic teaser video Samsung released today that makes its Series 7 Chronos look way more impressive than it probably will be. Unless the Chronos 7 actually is made by combining a metal eagle into a metal dog and performs like a metal bear. If that turns out to be the case, you can probably consider the Series 7 Chronos to be one of the most expensive notebooks ever as we’re sure capturing all-metal versions of those animals extremely dangerous and expensive.

Samsung refreshes Series 7 Chronos with AMD Radeon HD 8870M graphics

Just in time for CES 2013, Samsung has updated its Series 7 Chronos notebook with a few welcomed upgrades — the most notable upgrade being AMD’s Radeon HD 8870M graphics chip. There’s not too much information on the new laptop to go around, but it does have a RAMaccelerator, which promises 50 percent faster app loading, a full HD display, and JBL speakers.

series-7-chronos

Samsung posted up a video today showing off the refreshed laptop, and aside from the animal robots that take up most of the video, the company gives us a quick peek as to what the new Series 7 Chronos can do graphics-wise. We also get a glimpse at the keyboard and the outer shell, which both feature a brushed aluminum look.

While the full spec sheet is still a mystery at this point, the most notable bump in performance is the improved graphics. Since the company’s 17-inch model already has a full HD 1920×1080 display and JBL speakers, these improvements could be coming to the 15-inch model, and other features like the RAMaccelerator and upgraded graphics are also coming to the 17-inch version.

In the end, we don’t know what Samsung has up its sleeve, but you can bet big that the company will unveil more during CES next week. We certainly wouldn’t mind an Ultrabook with HD 8870M graphics, but we’re curious as to what other hardware will lie underneath those keys.

Samsung Reveals Robotic Vacuum Cleaner With Longer Reach

Samsung Reveals Robotic Vacuum Cleaner With Longer Reach

No – you’re not experiencing deja vu. We did report earlier today on LG’s upcoming Hom-Bot vacuum debuting at CES 2013, and here we are, talking about another vacuum this time from Samsung.  Apparently, it seems CES 2013 will be the location for the smart-vacuum battle to the death that we’ve all been waiting for.

Samsung has just announced its Smart Tango Corner Cleaner for CES which is disc-shaped, like the majority of robotic vacuum cleaners on the market, but what sets this one apart is its pop-out spinning brushes that extend away from vacuum’s body. The brushes are able to reach much farther than competing vacuums, which hopefully means cleaner floors for customers, especially in those hard-to-reach places.

No other details were given at this time concerning the Smart Tango Corner Cleaner, but we’re sure we’ll be hearing more about it next week at CES. Until then, you can be sure we’re going to look at our Roombas with a little bit more disgust as it dutifully cleans our apartment, not knowing it’ll soon be replaced by either LG or Samsung.

Hyundai to bring Google Maps integration to upcoming car models

Earlier today, Kia Motors and Google announced a partnership that would bring Google Maps to new car models. However, Hyundai has also made a deal with the search giant to bring Google Maps integration to their own vehicles as well, including some pretty awesome features, like Send To Car and voice search.

Hyundai

Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics platform currently offers a variety of features that make driving more convenient and information-packed, but the addition of the Google Maps and Places API should make the experience even more feature-filled. One of the coolest features is Send to Car, where users can look up a map on their computers, and then send it to their car’s navigation system.

Users can also voice search for a point of interest, as well as any other local search from the system. This will no doubt be a huge convenience for travelers, who now won’t have to fiddle with buttons on the navigation system, and simply just speak out directions or search for locations using just their voice.

Hyundai will demo the new technology and the Google Maps integration at CES next week. We’re guessing Hyundai will start implementing the new technology in 2014 models, but the company hasn’t yet announced what cars will receive the integration.
