Samsung rumored to show 5″ 1080p display at CES

Companies have already started to roll out 1080p smartphone displays, and HTC‘s recent DROID DNA announcement marks the first time a smartphone with a 1080p display will hit American soil. However, Samsung won’t be far behind if recent reports are accurate. It’s rumored that Samsung will show off a 1080p smartphone display of their own at CES 2013.

Korean newspaper Aisae reports that Samsung has developed a 4.99-inch 1080p display that is said to be used in the company’s rumored Galaxy S IV handset. The display is expected to enter the production stage sometime in Q1 2013, and will be on showcase at CES 2013. The display is said to have a pixel density of 441ppi, which just beats HTC’s DRIOD DNA by one pixel.

If the production details are true, we could see the Galaxy S IV arrive sometime in Q2 2013 possibly. We heard about the device back in September, and it’s aimed to be the Galaxy S III‘s successor. We were tipped with a March 2013 release date, which is right on track with the 1080p screen production estimates.

The new 1080p AMOLED display from Samsung is claimed to be very thin with low power consumption, and will feature high contrast and a high refresh rate. Whether or not the screen will display that kind of performance is still up in the air. We’ll certainly have to save any judgement for when we eventually see it at CES come January.

Samsung bringing 85-inch ultra high definition TV to CES

DNP Samsung bringing 85inch ultra high definition TV to CES

Samsung announced on Monday that it won 27 CES Innovation Awards for several of its products, but nested within a list of familiar honorees was a wildcard: an 85-inch ultra high definition TV. Bringing earlier prototypes (pictured above) to fruition, this massive up and comer cranks out resolutions of over 8 million pixels. Sammy is billing this titanic television as “the world’s largest commercialized UHD LED TV,” a claim that will likely be challenged soon. Thin on pricing and release details, the company did confirm that it will be on display at CES 2013. So, if you’re currently denying yourself luxuries such as hot water and warm meals in hopes of saving up to snag a certain 84-inch UHD set, you might want to pump your brakes until you see what Samsung has up its sleeve in the months to come.

Samsung brand reboot reported for CES 2013

The blue oval may be headed out the door sooner than later if those “in the know” with Samsung are to believed about a full brand reboot around the time of CES 2013. Reports come from Channel News in Australia where they’ve got some anonymous sources speaking to the idea of a “more vibrant international brand image.” They’ve made it clear that this new look and feel will be brought on by none other than Brandstream and its powerhouse CEO Scott Bedbury.

This fellow Bedbury is known for creating the Nike “Just Do It” campaign that turned the company into an international beast of a brand. He also made Starbucks into the beast it is today with the comfy chairs and CD sales we now take for granted in coffee shops around the world. Samsung’s rebranding is said to be taking on a bit of a “feel” change, concentrating no longer so much on the “features and benefits” of the devices they sell, but on “lifestyle activities” instead.

History images via Samsung Village

We had a conversation about this sort of shift just this past week in a column by the name of Device Specs are Over, Long Live the Ecosystem. Basically what appears to be happening here is the peak of excellence in smartphones and tablets – or the peak of what consumers could possibly want in a device without getting something to back these devices up. Backing them up – that means creating a software and brand ecosystem to make them all worthwhile.

It’s as if there’s a world without roads and manufacturers have been selling bikes without making enough effort to create the paths that people need to ride them on. If Samsung does indeed continue on the brand ecosystem path they’re on now, a complete rebranding around the time of CES 2013 would certainly not be out of the question. Here’s looking forward to it!

RIM tries to patent system-generated blog entries, we quietly update our resumés

Image

Research in Motion has applied to patent a system for automatically drafting a blog entry on your smartphone. In the examples, it would build out the bare-bones of an entry as soon as it hits a “trigger event,” such as taking a picture at a pre-determined set of GPS co-ordinates. Presumably, all you’d have to do is fill in the witty caption below and hit send, saving you valuable minutes on your road-trip. Of course, it may not even be granted, so don’t expect a CES trailer staffed solely with Bolds just yet…

Samsung: Galaxy S III’s universal search function ‘inadvertently removed’, will return to UK models in the next few days

After being unceremoniously stripped in a recent OTA update, Samsung has told TechRadar that the Galaxy S III’s universal search function will return — at least in the UK. A spokesperson for Samsung said that the “inadvertent removal” will be remedied in the “correct software upgrade” over the next few days. It sends a mixed message on why the feature was removed in the first place — and makes us wonder whether the search box will ever return to the Sprint iteration any time soon. Still, it’s good news for anyone that’s having trouble keeping tabs on all those Angry Birds iterations. Gotta finish ’em all.

Samsung’s Stephen Woo to kick off day two of CES with keynote

Samsung's Stephen Woo to kick off day two of CES with keynote

You might be thinking, “it’s too early to be talking about CES,” and we wish you were right, but you’re not. January’s consumer electronics extravaganza is inching closer, plans are already being laid and Samsung President Stephen Woo is filling in appointments in his calendar. The most important of those will be his keynote that’s set to kick off day two of the festivities in Vegas. The talk will largely focus on the little things, and we don’t mean unimportant things, we mean components. All those tiny slivers of silicon that make your gadgets go are really what is pushing the industry forward and Samsung is a major player — pumping out processors, memory, SIMs and camera sensors. The former Bell Labs and Texas Instruments employee will bring his 20-plus years of experience to bear on a vision of the future, presumably powered by Sammy’s chips. Will he also unveils something new… perhaps a next gen smartphone CPU? We’ll just have to wait and see. Guess it’s time to start booking those flights.
