Meet The Future Of CES Reporting: The Double Robotics Telepresence Robot

double

Ignore all the noise at CES and just get a Double, a Telepresence robot with an iPad for a face. Pay someone to turn it on at CES and enjoy all the sights and sounds from the comfort of your home. Sounds like paradise to me.

In fact, just for a lark, that’s what John Biggs did one cool CES morning. Instead of slumming it on the CES showfloor with Jordan and Greg, John joined the live streaming crew without leaving our CES booth.

As Jordan notes in the video, the Double looks and acts like a small Segway with an iPad mounted on top. It’s controlled by an iPad or iPhone on the other side. Essentially, as long as both ends are connected to the Internet, the Double becomes your eyes and ears. And if the connectivity can work deep within CES, it will likely work anywhere.

“People are buying them faster than we can make them,” says Double Robotics’ Jay Liew revealing that there have been 900 orders placed in 45 countries. “We are trying to scale up production. 90% are businesses.”

The Double is currently available for pre-ordering for $2,000.

Synology DiskStation Manager makes jump to version 4.2 beta

While most companies seem to use CES to unveil new products and hardware, some use the show to launch new software. Synology is one such company, bringing its DiskStation Manager up to version 4.2 beta during the show. DiskStation Manager, as pretty much every Synology user already knows, is the operating system the company has developed for its network attached servers.

IMG_3612wtmk-w1024

The list of new features found in DiskStation Manager 4.2 beta is absolutely huge, so Synology users are definitely in for a treat. Some of the major highlights of this release include an expansion of QuickConnect to cover DS Photo+, DS File, and DS Audio. This upgrade should make it easier for new users to set these features up, which is always a plus.

iOS users now also have a DS Cloud app at their disposal, which seems to essentially be Synology’s in-house version of Dropbox. DSM’s Package Manager is also getting a pretty major overhaul with this release, and it adds a bunch of new ease-of-use features and new apps that users have specifically been asking for. If you’ve been bugging Synology for new apps and functionality in the Package Manager, there seems to be a pretty good chance that your wishes have been granted.

IMG_3640wtmk-w1024

Jumping back to the Cloud-related features, Synology has done quite a bit with syncing in this latest release. For instance, Cloud Station is being brought up to version 2, and with this new version, the size limit for files is doubling – now users can sync files up to 10GB in size, rather than just 5GB. DiskStation Manager 4.2 beta is available for download right now from Synology’s website, with the full release following in another month or so. Be sure to check out our CES portal for all of our coverage from the show!

Archos announces Titanium tablet lineup with Jelly Bean starting at $119

The folks from Archos revealed their new 97 Titanium tablet back in December with a Retina-like display and Jelly Bean for a low price, and today they’ve added three new tablets to the lineup. Here at CES the Archos crew just unveiled three new tablets will join their Titanium offering.

titanium

While the 97 Titanium is the most expensive of the pack and features a 2048×1536 resolution display, the rest are rather affordable and should make for some good budget tablets. Today Archos took the wraps off the entire family. The models will include the 70 Titanium, 80 Titanium, 101 Titanium and the previously mentioned 97 Titanium HD.

Just like all tablets from Archos the models represent their respective sizes. So we have a 7-inch mode, 8, 9.7, and 10.1-inch to rock out all with dual-core processors and Android Jelly Bean — starting at $119. The full specs haven’t been released but Archos confirms they’ll all have IPS HD displays, and 1.6 GHz dual-core processors to keep things smooth. Obviously we have sleek aluminum or “titanium” designs, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Archos specifically mentions the 7-inch will also include an HD display, yet will still start at just $119 so we’re guessing this will be a pretty impressive price/performance tablet. Then you’ll be paying $169 for the 8-inch, $199 for the Titanium 101, and $249 for the Retina packing 97 that was announced last year. Archos states their 7-inch is similar to Amazon’s offering at a better price, the 80 competes with the iPad mini, and their 9.7 Titanium is half the price of the new iPad. Obviously build quality won’t be on par, but what are your thoughts on these new tablets?

Archos Titanium Tablets Unveiled At CES 2013

archos titanium Archos Titanium Tablets Unveiled At CES 2013 [CES 2013] What better way to launch a device, or a range of devices, than to use the platform known as CES? Archos has just introduced the Titanium line in its Elements range of tablets, and just as the element’s name suggests, the Titanium line delivers high-end specifications in a bang-for-your-buck experience. In fact, all Titanium range tablets will come with a High Definition IPS display capacitive multi-touch screen, a dual-core 1.6GHz processor that is accompanied by a quad-core GPU with 1080p video decoding capability, running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, all crammed into a sleek aluminum design.

The Archos 70 Titanium (measures 7” naturally) is priced at $119 a pop, while those who want a larger display can settle for the 8” Archos 80 Titanium at $169 – making it an iPad mini competitor. As for the 10.1” Archos 101 Titanium, this $199 tablet is 30% cheaper compared to the competition with comparable features, and for those who want to go broke, the 9.7” Archos 97 Titanium HD has a stunning 2048 x 1536 resolution, costing just $249. They certainly are priced to move, no?

Rapoo TV Wants To Make Your TV Smart

rapoo tv Rapoo TV Wants To Make Your TV Smart[CES 2013] So we are halfway through the madness that is known as CES 2013, and what other kinds of goodies have we discovered? Rapoo, one of the leading manufacturers of wireless peripheral products, has just announced their latest addition to the wonderful world of gadgets in the form of the Rapoo TV. Basically, the Rapoo TV is a receiver and remote solution that will help turn any HDTV “smart”, and I do wonder what happens to those folks who already own a Smart TV, and plug in the Rapoo TV? Does this mean that their Smart TVs are now Genius TVs? Humor me.

Well, back to the Rapoo TV – it will basically hook up any Wi-Fi enabled iOS or Android device to an HDTV, allowing users to perform searches over the Internet, download applications and view web or smartphone content. The Rapoo TV is capable of mirroring content from the connected iOS or Android devices onto the HDTV, and your smartphone or tablet will also double up as a remote control for the TV. Heck, opt to connect a wireless mouse and keyboard to Rapoo TV and your HDTV ends up as a pseudo-desktop. I find it rather humorous that in an age of 3D color TVs, the Rapoo TV will come in black or white later this quarter.

The Five Best Phones of CES 2013

Compared to years past, CES 2013 was pretty light on phones. The focus was more on health/fitness gadgets and 4K UHD TVs. But among the few phones at the show, we some good ones. Here are the top five. More »

InWin flaunts open cases, lets your components flap in the wind

Worried that your PC case can’t stand up to a natural disaster, or doesn’t resemble a radiator enough? In-Win’s read your mind with a couple of open-plan models from CES 2013: the aluminum D-Frame (above left) looks ready for the Paris-Dakar rally and is “crush-proof and shock-proof,” while the H-Frame is basically case-shaped cooling fins, also in “exquisite satiny aluminum,” according to the charming company literature. The two models are geared to modders serious about standing out from the usual ragtag LED and pump crowd, with pricing to match: $399 for each. If you scrape for one, though, at least you know you’ll be unique — In-Win will only produce 500 copies of the D-Frame, and a mere 100 H-Frames.
