Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 vs iPhone 5

While Apple keeps up the mobile hero action with their iPhone 5 all around the world, Lenovo brings forth a massive beast of a device known as the IdeaPhone K900. These two devices are just about as different as two phones can get, the iPhone working with a 4-inch display, the IdeaPhone K900 bringing on a beastly 5.5-inch display, but the similarities are there: both companies want the world to understand that they want to push forth a hero made not only to destroy the competition with specifications, but as a solid project that’s more than the sum of its parts.

You can get the full details of the Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 in our original hands-on from just a bit earlier tonight, but the key bits appear to be this: a solid thought-out bit of hardware surrounding Lenovo’s unique brand of Android and an Intel Atom Z2580 (Clover Trail) processor. The iPhone 5, compared in those aspects, is of course also a solid thought-out bit of hardware surrounding Apple’s own entire mobile OS (iOS) and an Apple A6 chip.

At the moment there’s really not a whole lot we can compare between the two because of the prototype stage of the Lenovo device, but the approach appears to be very similar. Of course Lenovo’s device runs Google’s mobile OS instead of their own in-house software, but they seem to want to move forward with a single device as a hero. We’ll see this year if they stick to their guns.

Hands-on with T-Mobile’s HD Voice, Tap Tag app for NFC-ready Android phones

Handson with TMobile's HD Voice, Tap Tag app for NFCready Android phones

T-Mobile had more than just big updates at its CES event; it gave us opportunities to try both its newly national HD Voice service and a seemingly unknown carrier-specific NFC app, Tap Tag. The currently Android-only software is best described as a crossover between somewhat simpler existing NFC tag systems. like Samsung’s Tectiles, and multi-step automation like Motorola’s Smart Actions. Put a Tap Tag-equipped phone against a relevant marker and it will perform one or more customizable tasks, such as putting the phone in a do-not-disturb mode at the same time it sets an alarm for the morning. From our glance through the menus, it’s surprisingly deep and flexible without being intimidating. There are pre-defined templates, but nothing’s set in stone — if your definition of an office mode involves launching YouTube and cranking the volume, you can make it happen.

More details, including HD Voice testing, await after the break.

VivoPlay from Evado Filip hands-on

Here at Showstoppers 2013 during CES 2013, Evado Filip is showing off its new device called VivoPlay. The device has one very important goal: keep your children safe without suffocating them. Parents can link the VivoPlay to a companion iOS or Android app, keeping tabs on their child while letting them still be a kid.

IMG_3575wtmk-w1024

There are a number of potentially life-saving features Evado Filip is focusing on with the VivoPlay. The first of the features is location, with the device being able to keep an eye on your child’s location using GPS, GSM, and WiFi. Using those three technologies at once means that there’s a better chance your child will be able to be found if they go missing, so naturally, it’s a winning idea.

Parents will be able to designate five different numbers that can communicate with the VivoPlay, and outside of those, the device won’t be able to contact anyone else. Children only need to push a single button to make a call, so if they ever need help, they won’t need to go through menu after menu to make a call. Parents will also be able to send text messages up to 16 characters long to their child’s VivoPlay, which is an added bonus.

IMG_3577wtmk-w1024

One particularly nifty feature is the ability to create safe zones. If your child wanders outside of the safe zone you’ve designated, you’ll be alerted with a text message, and in turn you’ll be able to contact your child and see what’s up. It’s a very cool little device and it even comes with a built-in emergency feature that a child can use to get help quickly. The VivoPlay will be available soon, but while we wait for more details to come out of Evado Filip, be sure to check out our CES portal for all of our news from the show.

Sony One-touch NFC remote mirroring Hands-on

Remotes only have a few select uses for our TVs these days, even with smart TVs, but the folks from Sony are changing how we use and perceive our remotes. At CES Sony announced a few new remotes that pack more than just some batteries inside, instead we have NFC support for easy mirror mode capabilities. Read on for all the details.

P1050485

Earlier this week we shared the original details, and today we managed to catch up with Sony for a quick hands-on look at their new NFC enabled remote controls for their smart TVs. (read: the expensive ones). So you ask what this is for? And we’ll tell you below.

Want to share the song you’re enjoying on that Xperia smartphone, or the YouTube video you’re viewing on the small screen to the big one? Simply tap your NFC capable Xperia to your Sony remote and their One-touch mirror mode will activate. Within seconds you’ll be streaming that content or enjoying that music on the big screen and your home theater. We saw their easy-pairing approach already, and this is just one more aspect that will make their new smartphones and TVs great.

P1050487

Sony doesn’t want us fumbling through settings, enabling share features or trying to pair our phone to the TV for hours. Let the built-in settings and NFC (Near Field Communication) feature do it for you. This is so dead simple the mass public should be able to adopt and enjoy the feature with ease. Simply tap your smartphone to the remote and a quick haptic feedback vibration lets you know the connection was received and mirror mode is active. A simple second tap and hold will kill the connection and let you get back to enjoying content on the Xperia display.

As expected, this feature will be exclusive to Sony’s own Xperia devices. While this makes sense for them, the mass public using iPhones or the Galaxy S III could also use this feature and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of it soon. Hopefully one day soon they’ll open this up for all smartphones to enjoy.

Panasonic Reveals New ToughPads With Choice Of Android, Windows 8 OSes

Panasonic Reveals New ToughPads With Choice Of Android, Windows 8 OSes

[CES 2013] Panasonic’s CES Press Conference took place yesterday morning to which they announced a number of features for their Smart TVs, a bone-conducting headphone and a new LUMIX camera and it looks like they weren’t done showcasing some of their new products for 2013. One of which is their new Toughpad line of tablets.

Panasonic’s Toughpads, which, of course, are tablet versions of their popular Toughbook line will be receiving new version this year as there will be an Android and Windows 8 tablet.

The Toughpad JT-B1 is their new 7-inch Android tablet that runs Ice Cream Sandwich and features a 13MP rear-facing camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4660, 16GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, microSD slot, Bluetooth 4.0 and a micro-USB port. It has eight hours of battery life, an expansion port for barcode and MSR readers and has a 3-year warranty attached to it.

Panasonic’s other Toughpad is the FZ-G1 and is a 10-inch tablet that runs a full version of Windows 8, and is packed with a 1,920 x 1,200 display, 1.9GHz Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5-3437U vPro CPU, a 128GB SSD drive (upgradable to 256GB), up to 8GB of RAM and also has an eight-hour battery.

The Android-powered JT-B1 will be available in February for $1,300 while the Windows 8-powered Toughpad FZ-G1 will be available in March for $2,900. Just be sure if you’re going to spend all of that money on either of these tablets that you have one demanding job so you can feel the joy of throwing your tablet around without worrying about it getting busted.

QNX unveils concept Bentley Continental GT alongside Car Platform 20

RIM’s subsidiary QNX has a serious thing for cars. Today, the company announced the QNX Car Platform 2.0 and an associated development platform, which is now available to auto manufacturers. Later this year, the group will also release an HTML5 SDK, which will provide specialized APIs for accessing various hardware components within a vehicle. To show off the platform, QNX partnered with Bentley to produce a concept Continental GT, which the duo unveiled today at CES. It’s said to boast smartphone integration, voice recognition and video conferencing — scary to think about that last one. In the following clip, you’ll find an overview of the development process, along with a peek of the interface and controls. Consider the Porsche 911 officially jealous.

Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 vs Samsung Galaxy Note II

With the Lenovo IdeaPhone K900, the company enters in the race for a real live hero phone for the whole world, here reminding us instantly of the other massive smartphone in this warring market – the Samsung Galaxy Note II. What we’ve got here is a real live fight for a dominant beast, a massive machine made to rule them all, starting with displays – and Lenovo takes the cake with resolution right out of the box. Samsung, on the other hand, has the physically larger display (though it is a bit less dense in its pixel distribution.)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The thing about the IdeaPhone K900 right this minute is that it’s still in its prototype phase, not actually coming out until somewhere around April of this year – and the initial plan is to release it in China alone. The Samsung Galaxy Note II is already out in quite a few countries around the world, including the USA and Europe. The prospect of the IdeaPhone K900 is great though, regardless of its release range, simply because it’s working with the relatively rare Intel Atom Z2580 Clover Trail SoC.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Samsung Galaxy Note II works with the Samsung Exynos quad-core processor we know works to great effect even across its massive face. The IdeaPhone K900 has a display that’s 5.5-inches and 1080p resolution with IPS technology while the Galaxy Note II’s face is a 5.5-inch 720p display working with Super AMOLED – bright as can be.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Some of the items we’re really not able to compare at the moment are the Android OS versions, as though the Note is up to Android 4.2 in some places, the Lenovo offering has not yet been shown with a full working version of Android as of yet. We’ll be sure to see a whole lot more in the very near future from the company as the device hits the market. Have a peek at our hands-on comparison images above and below and let us know which one you’d choose if given the chance!

ZTE Grand S Hands On: Superphone Doesn’t Seem So Super

We love an underdog story. So when we saw that ZTE—a company which in the U.S. is not so synonymous with “quality” —was making a spec-monster phone, we were excited. After playing with it for about ten minutes, we’re a bit less enthusiastic. More »

Huawei’s HiSilicon K3V3 chipset due 2H 2013, to be based on Cortex-A15

Earlier today our brethren over at Engadget Chinese got to hang out with Huawei Device chairman Richard Yu, who was kind enough to inform us that his company will release a HiSilicon K3V3 chipset — the follow-up to the current quad-core K3V2 — in the second half of this year. What’s more, much like NVIDIA’s upcoming Tegra 4, the new platform will be based on the more powerful Cortex-A15 ARM architecture instead of Cortex-A9. Yu also hinted that the K3V3 will be featured in the successors to the Ascend D2 and the Ascend Mate, but our guess is that we won’t be seeing those at MWC next month. We shall tickle the man live on stage for more answers this Thursday.
