OLPC announces XO Tablet coming to select Walmart stores later in 2013

OLPC announces XO Tablet will be sold at Walmart, more retail stores to come

One Laptop Per Child still hasn’t revealed any pricing details about that US-bound XO Tablet, but today the company’s announcing some of the retail shelves we can expect its new child-friendly device to hit. For starters, the XO Tablet will be available at ‘select’ Walmart brick-and-mortar stores and website in the US this year, however OLPC wasn’t quite clear about when exactly that’s going to be — we tried asking the company ourselves, but we were told no information could be given at the time. Furthermore, OLPC said it has struck a deal with Sakar International, which gives the latter exclusives rights “to sell the XO Tablet to leading US retailers for both in-store and online sales.” Only time will tell how many retailers will join Wally on offering the learning device, but one of the world’s largest retailers certainly isn’t a bad place to start.

Why 4K Phones Aren’t Such a Bad Idea

Moments ago, at a small press event, Raj Talluri, Qualcomm’s VP of Product Management dropped this little nugget. “You are just starting to see 1080p display phones. I think that will go even higher.” My brain instantly exploded. More »

Valve Teams Up With Xi3 For Steam-Powered ‘Piston’ PC

Valve Teams Up With Xi3 For Steam Powered Piston PC

[CES 2013] We’ve been hearing whispers of Valve potentially entering the console market with a console of their own for months now, especially after their release of their Big Picture Mode. This year’s CES seems to have been the perfect place for them to finally unveil what they’ve been working on, which turns out it isn’t a console, but instead, a PC.

Valve has partnered up with Xi3 to reveal their prototype called “Piston.” The mini-PC is being built with Steam and Big Picture Mode in mind, but both companies were tight-lipped in regards to its specs or any other details regarding the project. What they did decide to share was the Piston PC will have 1TB of internal storage and will be based on Xi3′s X7a modular PC.

Seeing as the Piston is expected to be a mini-PC, you could technically consider this console-like as it could easily be brought into the living room for some gaming good times. Although we’re hesitant to see just how many non-gamers decide to drag this into their living rooms after it’s released.

Turtle Beach PX51, XP510, SEVEN series hands-on

Turtle Beach has made a big appearance here at CES 2013 by announcing several new headsets that are both wireless and wired. The company announced a new headset specifically for Xbox 360 gamers, as well as an exclusive option for PlayStation 3 gamers as well. They also announced the SEVEN series for consoles, PCs, and mobile platforms that include “tournament-grade” quality and functionality. We ended up stopping by the company’s booth and getting some hands-on time with the new products.

The Ear Force XP510 for Xbox 360 and the Ear Force PX51 for PlayStation 3 are both wireless headsets that cater specifically to their respective gaming consoles. Both headsets feature Turtle Beach’s proprietary digital signal processor, Dolby surround sound, dual band WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 15-hour rechargeable battery. Pricing is set at $289 for the XP510 and $269 for the PX51. We should expect both headsets to become available sometime in Q1 2013.

The company also announced their new SEVEN series, consisting of headsets built specifically for gaming consoles (Ear Force XP SEVEN), PC gaming (Ear Force Z SEVEN), and mobile platforms (Ear Force M SEVEN). These are priced at $279, $249, and $149, respectively. What’s unique about the SEVEN series is that they include interchangeable cable kits, and feature a removable boom microphone and in-line microphone for increased flexibility for different gaming styles. These headsets will be available sometime in Q1 2013, while the TM1 audio mixer ($249), which allows greater control when team chatting, is available starting today.

In related Turtle Beach news, the company also upgraded its PX21 headset and released the PX22 ($79) by offering amplified audio, bass and treble boosts, and a “4-pole connector” for compatibility with mobile devices. The company also released two more PC-gaming headsets — the Z300 and Z22. Turtle Beach claims the Z300 as the only Bluetooth-enabled PC headset capable of answering calls or streaming music through a mobile device, and the Z22 is the first PC headset that features the company’s Chat Boost, as well as Bass and Treble Boost. All three of these headsets will be available sometime in Q2 2013.

Mushkin launches 'next generation' USB 30 drive, promises 300MBs readwrite speeds

While Mushkin tipped its hand early regarding details of its “world’s first” 480GB mSATA SSD, it did keep one thing back for CES. It’s launching what it promises is a SandForce-packing, “next generation” USB 3.0 drive that will have read and write speeds of over 300 MB per second. The company is keeping the specifics about its performance, its pricing, availability and even its casing a secret for now, but we’ve gotten in touch and will update this when we learn more.

Qualcomm’s Paul Jacobs: too early to call the game on Windows Phone

Image

This shouldn’t come as a surprise after Steve Ballmer crashed the Qualcomm CES keynote yesterday, but at a follow-up briefing earlier today, the latter’s CEO Paul Jacobs reiterated his support for Windows Phone. The exec said “it’s too early to call the game” on Microsoft’s mobile OS, and emphasized that he “never counted Microsoft out” as it has a lot of resources plus benefits, especially with the tie-in with its enterprise software and Xbox. “It is growing, they are gaining traction. When you use the devices they work well. That’s pretty key,” said Jacobs. Well, we’re certainly fans of the Snapdragon-powered HTC 8X and Lumia 920, so we shall see.

Bang & Olufsen launches BeoLab 15 in-wall speakers for stealthier beats

Bang & Olufsen launches BeoLab 15 and 16 inwall speakers, keeps beats hidden

Most Bang & Olufsen audio systems’ designs virtually beg for attention in the living room. The company’s just-launched combo of two BeoLab 15 satellite speakers, a BeoLab 16 subwoofer and an Amplifier 1 is very nearly designed for the opposite. The entire array can hide in the walls or ceiling, and juts out only when it’s tilting to direct sound to a specific area. The Amplifier 1’s 195W of total output won’t produce the most thundering sound, but this is one time when subtlety is arguably the greater value — it’s more about a discreet background tune than making the house rattle. Just be prepared to deal with the value Bang & Olufsen puts on its stealthy Danish design. You’ll need to pay $4,595 for the package when it ships this month, and that won’t include the costs of putting holes in the drywall.
