CES 2009: Velocity Micro Joins the Netbook Fray

m10.jpg

In a surprising turn, boutique PC maker Velocity Micro–known mostly for its premium customizable laptops and powerful multimedia machines–announced two affordable lightweight notebooks at CES yesterday. The NoteMagix M10 is the manufacturer’s entrée into the netbook market, and the NoteMagix M5 is a touchscreen handheld PC. So far Velocity Micro has released only a limited amount of information on specs for these two systems, but here’s what we have so far, after the jump.

3D TVs Grab Curious Eyes at CES 2009

LAS VEGAS — In the not-too-distant future, people on our television screens could be standing in our living rooms.

Several TV manufacturers at the Consumer Electronics Show are exhibiting prototypes of 3D televisions. Donning dorky glasses, attendees are crowding the booths for Sony, Samsung and Panasonic to gaze into these concept TV sets, with the dream that one of these could end up in their homes.

Sony stressed that its 3D TV is a concept product and therefore refused to comment on the technical details or even make a price estimate. But from our understanding, it appears to be stereoscopic 3D technology, which uses a combination of very expensive software and infrared emitters to enhance the visual depth perception.

People can keep dreaming though. Currently, if these babies were to go to market today, they’d cost around $20,000. That’s the estimate provided by other manufacturers working on similar devices, at least.

There will be a GSM-friendly 3G Palm Pre

We’ve gotten Palm on the record saying that there’s a WCDMA (read: UMTS world 3G) version of the Pre in the works, though we don’t know when or where. That means that the AT&Ts, T-Mobiles, and Vodafones of the world will get a shot at this baby. Suggestion, Palm: “soon” and “everywhere.”

Update: We’ve just seen a copy of the Pre’s press release, and sadly, the 3G GSM version is listed as being intended for “other regions” — in other words, places not served by Sprint. The good news, we guess, is that we’ve also confirmed that it’s HSDPA, so at least it’ll be hauling ass.

CES 2009: Canesta and Hitachi Control Your TV with the Wave of a Hand

canesta.jpg

It’s been in so many movies and TV shows that you probably think it already exists, but open-air hand-gestured controlled TVs are a thing of the future–the near future that is. Canesta, the “pioneer in low-cost, single-chip based 3D sensors,” announced today at CES that it has collaborated with Hitachi to create the first prototype of a TV that can be controlled by just the wave of a hand–no remote needed!

The prototype uses Canesta’s 3D sensor for gesture recognition. Visitors at the Hitachi booth at CES will be able to control the TV up to 3 meters away with just their hand gestures. For example, you can turn on the TV with a rapid wave, and change the channel with a circular motion. The new technology can also tell the difference between gestures using one hand and gestures with two hands.

Palm Pre first hands-on with live updates!

This is it! Our first go-round with Palm’s newest entry to the smartphone field — the pre. Watch this page for updates on our first impressions, a live stream of photos after the break, and observations on the company’s rebirth into the marketplace.

1:19PM – First photos are up. They’re running us through a demo of the phone, so we haven’t gotten to touch it just yet — the tension is killing!

1:38PM – They let us play with it a bit — while they held the other end, of course. The keyboard is Centro-esque, with shallow presses and cramped spacing. The actual keys are rubbery and easy enough to find with the fingernails of our massive man hands, other folks might have better luck using the pads of their fingers. The touchscreen isn’t quite as responsive as the iPhone or G1 — or it could be the OS, there seems to be a tiny lag between a tap and an action — but it’s still pretty great. We spent mere seconds toying with the OS, but all the actions seem ultra-intuitive.

Update: You can watch some video after the break!

Hands-on with Pentax’s new lineup, including the white Pentax K2000

Let’s just say this straight out: the white Pentax K2000 is one of the hottest DSLRs we’ve ever seen. It’s seriously lustworthy. Considering how great the reviews have been, we’d say it’s definitely worthy of a spot on your list if you’re in the market. Pentax’s less-interesting P70 and E70 were also out — they look nice enough, for being pretty ordinary. Check it all in the gallery!

Dell previews new G-Series monitors

Hot on the heels of Dell’s new XPS Studio laptop release, the company’s back with its G-Series LED monitors. We’re assuming that the G stands for “green,” ‘cos they’re really working the tree-hugging angle on this one — pointing out that widescreen LED flat panels consume less than half the power of comparable monitors, and that their designs incorporate “environmentally preferable” materials. Two models are currently available — the G2210 measures 22-inches, boasting 1680 x 1050 resolution and should fetch $279, while the G2410 24-inch boasts 1920 x 1080 (HD) resolution, with an asking price of $359. Both models are planned for late February.

JVC’s latest boomboxes do touch control, iPod integration

Full-blown boomboxes definitely aren’t as popular as they once were, but there’s still something curiously attractive about buying a music system that can be slung upside one’s shoulder when the mood strikes you. To that end, JVC has introduced a new trio in its micro audio system, with the UX-GN6 boasting a “wake-up” sensor that turns the rig on when motion is spotted and a “laser touch” control feature, which is a sophisticated way of saying touch sensitive. Obviously, all three play nice with iPods, and they’ll all be available in around two months for $99.95, $149.95 and $199.95 for the UX-G200, UX-LP5 and the UX-GN6, respectively.

Video: iriver WAVE-HOME hands-on

We’re continuing our onslaught of CES hands-ons with the WAVE-HOME from iriver. In a nutshell, it’s a more feature-filled Ojo with much more than just video calling — namely calendar, notes, plus it packs a WiFi phone in the back of the unit (pictured above). The video after the jump doesn’t quite do justice to the smoothness of the interface, but your mileage may vary depending on the fatness of your fingers. iriver reps told us that they estimate the unit to be priced at less than $400 to make affordable enough for people to buy more than one. Feel free to peep our original post for all the juicy tech specs, and don’t forget to point your friends in this direction if you don’t wanna feel like a loser if you drop four bills.
