CES 2009: INQs Cheap, Social Phone

inq1.gif

Want a smartphone but don’t want to shell out the dough? INQ Mobile is looking to make the smartphone experience more affordable–and more social. The handset offers a number of features generally only seen on higher-end handsets, such as Java support, widget integration, and support for third-party apps.

The company launched the handset in the UK on November 13th with 3 UK. The INQ1 has no planned U.S. release date, but the company says it’s currently in talk with carriers in the States.

The price point should be under $100–even less with carrier subsidization. Check out a video of the handset, after the jump.

CES 2009: BenQ S6 Mobile Internet Device

MIDS6-top.jpg

Just when you thought Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) have no place in our lives, BenQ went and announced its latest one. The S6 is smaller than the more popular netbooks, housing a 4.8-inch touch screen and weighing no more than a pound. Supposedly, it’s more advanced than a smartphone–minus the voice capabilities–and has the full capabilities of a laptop. It’s meant to go in your pocket, albeit a pretty large one; but the S6 has some compelling features.

The BenQ S6 has full browser support and integrates the necessary wireless connections, including 3G, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. And the standard stuff is there, like headphone and microphone jacks and a built-in speaker. With all MIDs, though, expect a stripped-down Linux variant, but you can surf Google and YouTube, run Skype, and edit documents with OpenOffice. So it’s almost like a netbook. And it runs Intel’s Silverthorne Atom platform, which lately has been getting some pretty good street cred.

Kodak Zx1 pocket HD cam and Z980 zoomer hands-on

Kodak came to CES with the new Zx1 rugged pocket HD cam and Z980 24x zoomer, and we spent some quality time with both. The Zx1 is an interesting repackaging of the Zi6 — it loses the pop-out USB connector in favor of a sealed waterproof casing, but it gains HDMI out and some fabulous colors. The Z980 is pretty large, but it’s super-light, almost surprisingly so. The unit we got to play with here is actually a pre-pro model, so that silver ring will be black on the final model, but otherwise it’s the same thing. Pics in the gallery!

Qualcomm tries to distract from Snapdragon fail with Android

At this point we’re pretty close to calling Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform vaporware — sure, we’ve seen a lot of clunky prototypes, but the company’s been promising a commercial launch forever, going so far as to say that it had lined up 30 reference designs by the likes of HTC, LG, Samsung, and ASUS. Sure, ok — but all it’s got at CES are the same old gigantor testing devices and lonely Linux convertible. Oh, but now there’s Android. Very impressive, guys — too bad Android was also running on the actually-interesting GiiNii Movit Mini parked next door. At least the whole thing wasn’t faked liked last year, we suppose. Shots in the gallery, of course.

Samsung shows off MBP200 pico projector

Samsung shows off MBP200 pico projector, teases mystery projector phone called

Tiny projectors seem to be popping up everywhere, filling press releases with amazing promise. However, it’s still not too often that you actually get to see the things in action, so we were glad to see Samsung displaying not one but two prototypes of their upcoming MBP200 pico projector running for all to see. The Digital Experience room was rather well lit, not ideal conditions for a wee projector, but it threw a respectably bright image on a screen about three feet away, shown above. Not much bigger than a cell phone, the MBP200 sports an integrated 480 x 320 projector plus a 2.2-inch, 320 x 240 LCD for when you feel like being a little more private. It plays videos, music, and even office productivity files directly from a microSD slot, meaning, in theory, you can do your entire presentation with one device. It all sounds and looks fantastic, the only thing missing being some semblance of an anticipated price or release date more specific than “this year.”
