Hasta La Gadget!

The idea of gesture-based remote control isn’t new, but GestureTek has added in 3D tracking to the mix for, you guessed it — even more expressive interaction with your TV. After all, you don’t live in flatland, so why should your remote control gestures? Of course, adding in depth perception requires the use of more than one webcam, but maybe that’s not a big tradeoff in our age of six and more speakers in the living room. The setup will be on display at CES (sans Xpletive), so we’ll try and swing by for a, um, hands on while we puzzle over how to add voice commands to this system. Watching the big game with your buddies just might get even more entertaining yet.

As you know, we’ve been hearing some mind-blowing Zii hype lately. If this latest rumor has any weight to it, among earth-shattering revelations unearthed in Creative’s booth at CES will be a Zii-powered Zen. Of course, screenshots like these can be faked all too easily — but really, why would anyone bother? What we have here is something that resembles previous Zen interfaces, formatted landscape rather than portrait, with what appears to be a widescreen display. Really, guys? Is this what passes for “revolutionary” these days? Call us jaded, but it’s rather hard for us to believe that any PMP would have the power to “better lives beyond our imagination.” Unless, of course, you’re talking about the MySpace MP3 player. We so want one of those.

Man, iLuv‘s on a roll like no other. Practically every week since the onset of December ’08 the company has pushed out a new alarm clock of some kind, and it has apparently saved the big boy for CES. Announced today, the iMM183 Hi-Fi Dual Dock Alarm Clock with Weather Band Radio promises to charge both you and your lover’s iPod / iPhone 3G while providing NOAA emergency alerts of impending weather-related doom. There’s also an obligatory auxiliary input for non-Apple devices, and the LED warning indicator should do a decent job of telling you what sort of catastrophe is looming. Just remember — HURRICANE ALERT =/ Rock You Like A Hurricane. Full release is after the break.

Micro-Star International (MSI) will be showing off its all-in-one
desktop, along with several other nifty looking gadgets, at the
Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

Dubbed
the MSI NetOn, the all-in-one desktop will come in three different
screen sizes: 16, 19 or 22 inches. It’ll be the first all-in-one
desktop to be powered by the Intel dual-core Atom processor, MSI said
in a press release Monday. MSI claims the desktop will consume only 20
percent of the power consumed by a normal PC.

MSI will also sell an advanced configuration of the NetOn called the
AE2203. That model ships with advanced multimedia functions, such as
full high-definition support.

Also at the show, MSI will display its newest Wind netbooks — the U115
and U120. The U115 will be the first netbook that uses both a solid
state drive and a hard disk drive (the former for booting, the latter
for storage).

The U120 is very similar to the original Wind — the main difference
being an optional 3.5G modem. The U120 also sports a sharper,
more professional look — white with black accents — compared to its
predecessor.

No details yet on a release date or pricing for the products.

If you thought that MSI would allow CES to pass it by without unleashing a veritable smorgasbord of new kit upon us, you’re dead wrong. For starters, the company will be showcasing its Wind U115 and U120 netbooks for the first time in the public eye at CES, and those oh-so-intriguing NetOn all-in-one machines we spotted overseas will also be making their US debut. Said rigs will arrive in 16-, 19- and 22-inch flavors, and it’s expected that Intel’s dual-core Atom will be powering the trio. Carrying on, we’ve got the EX625 and EX623 entertainment lappies joining the EX family with inbuilt subwoofers and Blu-ray drives, and the GT725, GT727, GT627 and GX420 will all be sliding into the gamer-centric GX line. Finally, MSI will be demonstrating its first “eco-friendly carbon fiber concept gaming notebook,” so we’ll definitely be sashaying over to wrap our paws around that.
