Live from the Engadget CES Stage: an interview with Huawei’s Richard Yu (updated x2)

This may not have been a huge mobile show for most companies (what with MWC just over the horizon), but Huawei certainly has lots to talk about. The CEO of the company’s consumer business group Richard Yu will be hitting the stage today and bringing along some goods to show off, too.

Update: Unfortunately Yu had to pull out at the last minute, so instead we will be meeting Huawei Device CMO Shao Yang at the same time slot. Stay tuned!

Update 2: False alarm! Richard Yu will be joining us, after all!

CST-01: The World’s Thinnest Watch

One of the things you may not expect to see at CES is wristwatches. Despite that fact, it’s not uncommon for companies to show up with geeky timepieces claiming to be the “world’s first” or “world’s most” this or that. This year a company called Central Standard Timing has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s thinnest watch called the CST-01 (The CST stands for “Central Standard Timing“.)

cst 01

The CST-01 watch is only 0.80mm thick. That means it’s thinner than a credit card. It uses E Ink electronic paper display to help achieve this feat. The patent-pending design is assembled by laminating the flexible watch components into a 0.5mm deep pocket etched into a single piece of flexible stainless steel. That flexible piece of stainless steel holds the display and acts as the watch bracelet.

Power for the watch comes from an embedded Thinergy Micro-Energy Cell that promises to charge the watch in just 10 minutes using an external dock. Thanks to the energy efficiency of the E Ink display, that charge is enough to power the watch for an entire month. One other unique feature is that you actually set the time on the base station, which cuts down on the need for buttons or a touchscreen on the watch itself.

The makers of the CST-01 are currently raising funds for production on Kickstarter, and you can pre-order one before February 22 for $129(USD). The watch is expected to ship in Q2 of 2013.

The only problem with 4K TV, other than being too expensive for anyone who isn’t a Prince William, is that there’s no good way to get 4K stuff to watch. Right? RED is selling a super-HD streaming box that says otherwise. More »

Magnetyze Charging System For iPhone 5 Available Q2 2013

Magnetyze Charging System For iPhone 5 Available Q2 2013

[CES 2013] Let’s be realistic and assume you don’t want a simple cell phone that is able to stand by for 15 years and you’d prefer a energy-draining smartphone in your pocket at all times. The last thing you want to do when you need to charge your phone is to look for your cable as many of us are probably not very organized. You need a product where you can harness the power of magnets to help charge your device, and Magnetyze is just the magnet-harnessing system for you.

BuQu has been offering its Magnetyze system for some time now as it has been offering new cases for the system as additional phones are made available. The latest case they’re showing off at CES this year is for the iPhone 5 as its tailored to the form factor and new Lightning connector the device has.

The package BuQu will make available in Q2 2013 comes with a Magnetyze protective case, a desk stand and a magnetic charging / data sync cable. Its iPhone 4/4S system was available late last year for $69.99, so we’re assuming the iPhone 5 system will be available for around that price as well.

ChargeCard To Enter Production Soon

chargecard ChargeCard To Enter Production Soon[CES 2013] It is always nice to see Kickstarter projects gain enough backers and turned into reality, and the ChargeCard is one of them. In fact the team behind the ChargeCard is at CES, where they were demonstrating their “baby” by offering a hands-on with those who are interested. To summarize, the ChargeCard, measuring roughly similar to a credit card albeit being a wee bit thicker, is able to fit into your wallet without missing a beat. It will come in handy during moments when your smartphone’s battery needs a quick pick-me-up, as the ChargeCard is in its element as it delivers power to thirsty gadgets.

Patriots would want to take note that the ChargeCard is made in California, and does have a rather durable feel to it. Right now, the iPhone 4 model is in production, while there will be a microUSB version entering production from next month onwards. Those who are rocking to an iPhone 5 will have to wait until April to receive the iPhone 5 Lightning connector. It is somewhat similar to carrying around a foot-long USB cable, except that the ChargeCard is so much cooler.

The ToughPad FX-G1 is aimed at industrial users and is ruggedized to military specifications with the ability to survive drops from up to 4 feet. The battery is user-replaceable and promises eight hours of use per charge. The tablet has integrated Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, optional 3G or 4G LTE broadband, USB 3.0, HDMI out, a wired Ethernet port, and an optional microSDxC memory card slot. While that all sounds great, the biggest problem with this tablet is going to be price. When it ships this March it will start at $2899(USD).

The Most Awesomest Televisions at CES 2013

2013 is shaping up to be a huge year for huge televisions. Almost every major brand is rolling out gigantic sets and packing them with four times the resolution of current TVs. One curved display is even redefining what constitutes a “flat screen” TV, period. Here’s what to watch in 2013. More »

Flexible Windows Phone Prototype Spotted

[CES 2013] I am quite sure that many of us were impressed when we first stumbled upon the Youm flexible OLED display by Samsung at CES this year, and it seems that during Samsung’s presentation of the Youm flexible OLED display, there was a prototype Windows Phone-powered device as well. You can check that out in the video above, although do be forewarned that the video’s quality leaves plenty to be desired. Very little, if not no information can be garnered from the video other than the fact that such a flexible OLED display is very, very real, and assuming other factors such as the market’s preparedness as well as pricing structure proves to be right, then we should be able to check out flexible smartphones on store shelves in due time.

What kind of applications do you think would flexible OLED displays work best in? Also, just which of the major mobile operating systems do you think would be able to thrive with a flexible OLED display in the new world?
