USB 3.0 Mashes the Pedal for More Speed at CES 2013

Compared to the rather sloth-like USB 2.0 port, the current USB 3.0 ports found on some computers and notebooks on the market today are insanely fast. The original USB 3.0 port support data transfer rates of up to 5 Gbps. The original USB 3.0 data transfer rate was enough to keep the lust for speed of your typical computer enthusiast sated for a while, but as with all things, now we all want more.

usb 30

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced at CES 2013 that a new specification is in the works that will double the performance of the existing USB 3.0 port. Using the new specification, a USB 3.0 port will be able to transfer data at up to 10 Gbps, about the same as single-channel Thunderbolt.

Along with twice the data throughput, the new specification also offers improved I/O power efficiency. The improved spec is backwards-compatible with existing USB 3.0 software stacks and device class protocols. That means that the port will work with existing 5 Gbps hubs and devices as well as older USB 2.0 products. The new port specification is up for industry review during Q1 of this year, and hope to start releasing products that take advantage of the improvements later in the year.

Acoustic Research’s $120 ARS60 Bluetooth speakers seem oddly familiar

Acoustic Researchs new portable speakers strongly remind us of the Supertooth Disco

This is Acoustic Research’s ARS60, a portable Bluetooth speaker that’s weirdly pint-shaped, pumps out 16 watts of RMS power and has a battery rated for ten hours of play at medium volume. Of course, we’re fairly sure that this is a re-badged SuperTooth Disco 2, albeit slapped with a $120 price-tag. If you’re interested in picking one up, it’ll be available in the Spring, but if you don’t want to wait that long, you could always just buy one of the originals at a cheaper price.

Panasonic Reveals New Blu-ray Players, Media Streamers At CES

Panasonic Reveals New Blu ray Players, Media Streamers At CES

[CES 2013] In the market for a new Blu-ray player or media streamer and own a number of Panasonic devices in your home theater setup? Then you’ll be happy to hear Panasonic is announcing a number of new Blu-ray players as well as media streamers at CES this week to be available next month.

First off, there are a total of four Blu-ray players that will be available at retail starting in February. Panasonic’s DMP-BD89 and DMP-BD79 are the company’s 2D Blu-ray players, while the DMP-BDT330 and DMP-BDT230 offer Full HD 3D compatibility. All four Blu-ray players feature Panasonic’s IPTV platform and VIERA Connect, but the 2D Blu-ray players feature IP VOD, which is a service that offers a limited selection of streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video and YouTube.

Only two media streamers are being introduced this week: the DMP-MST60 and DMP-MS10. Both media streamers offer VIERA Connect and IP VOD, like the Blu-ray players, but the DMP-MST60 is 3D capable and includes a web browser while the DMP-MS10 doesn’t have those two fancy features. Both media streaming players have the ability to play media from an external HDD and offer Miracast, which allows you to transfer photos and videos located on their smartphone or tablet to their HDTV.

All of Panasonic’s Blu-ray players and media streamers will be available next month, but at this time, no price point has been announced for any of them.

Pantech Discover hands-on: AT&T budget powerhouse

Today we’ve got our hands on the brand new AT&T Pantech Discover, a 4.8-inch 720p TFT display wielding Android smartphone with a 13 megapixel camera being prepped for hot sales under its surprisingly inexpensive $50 price tag. This machine was introduced to the world just this morning and was met with a collection of surprised eyes at the combination of a sub-$100 cost and specifications that would warrant much more cash up-front. In our hand here and now, the truth becomes clear.

heros

Under the hood of this machine you’ve got dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor, that being the same processor you’ll find in a surprisingly large number of phones (and some tablets!) over the past several months. You’ve got the ability to use NFC to beam URLs and contacts (and other fun stuff) from the Pantech Discover to any other Android device working with the technology as well.

This machine’s main point is to bring you a rather powerful presentation at an extremely low price point. Whether or not you want a smartphone now, with a $50 phone you’ll have a bit more difficult time saying no – or that’s AT&T and Pantech’s intent, anyway. This device does not work with the most recent version of Android, nor does it stagger the masses with highest-level specs in all areas, but the target audience isn’t those that need the best of the best, it’s those that want a fabulous Android phone for $50 USD.

Have a peek at our hands-on video above as well as our hands-on photos above and below to get a hang of this machine before it hits stores rather rapidly. Also be sure to stick around our CES portal all week long for more fun from all angles!

Lenovo signs up Bluestacks to add Android apps to its Windows 8 PCs

Lenovo signs up Buestacks to add Android apps to its Windows 8 PCs

We’ve grown accustomed to seeing Lenovo’s Android-running smartphones, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to see the company bring the operating system to its PCs as well. The PC maker has followed AMD in teaming up with Bluestacks to bring its Android App Player to Lenovo’s Windows 8 PCs — almost a year to the day that the software was originally launched. The company promises that users will soon be able to seamlessly sync their favorite apps and SMS messages between smartphone and PC, but the company isn’t ready enough to give a firm date, so we’ll just have to hope it’s soon.

Kingston announces HyperX Predator 1TB USB 3.0 flash drive

We’ve certainly seen 1TB flash drives before, but today at CES, Kingston unveiled the world’s highest-capacity USB 3.0 flash drive, the HyperX Predator, with a capacity of 1TB — 1,024 large, sweet gigabytes. While the high capacity usually gets priority over speed in most flash drives, Kingston’s Predator doesn’t skimp on that, promising read/write speeds of up to 240MB/s and 160MB/s, respectively.

DTHXP30_1TB

It’s certainly not as fast as most of the SSDs that ship in many of today’s laptops, but it’s definitely plenty fast for a storage device that fits in your pocket, and we’re assuming that most people won’t expect SSD-type speeds anyway, considering it’s just a flash drive and nothing more.

The HyperX Predator comes in at a size of 2.84″ x 1.06″ x 0.82″ without the attached keyring, and it jumps to 3.49″ long with it on. It’s a pretty average size for a flash drive, so don’t expect anything spectacular in that respect once you get your hands on it. Either way, it’s still plenty portable to take with wherever you go, and the zinc metal alloy casing keeps it safe from the elements.

The 1TB HyperX Predator will be available later in Q1, and while the price hasn’t been disclosed yet, the 512GB version of the same flash drive model is available now for a staggering $1,750, so we’re guessing the 1TB version will be at least double that. The company is also releasing 32GB and 64GB versions for those who don’t quite want to spend that much dough.

TVs Sure Looked Dumb 10 Years Ago

Vizio has a cute, self-deprecating display up at CES. It showed a Vizio TV made 10 years ago compared to one made in 2012. TVs were butt fugly back then—it’s as big a difference as a Palm Pilot and the iPhone 5. More »

Parrot Flower Power Smart Wireless Plant Sensor – Demo

[CES 2013] We published about the Flower Power by Parrot when it was shown for the first time during CES Unveiled. Connected wirelessly via Bluetooth Smart to the iPad, the device packs several sensors that can measure sunlight, humidity, temperature and fertilizer levels.

Users can monitor their plants from their tablets using the Flower Power application that features a database of over 6,000 plants. Finding the plant you own is easy even if you do not know its name, you can find it simply by looking in its color category. The device I saw at CES Unveiled was still a prototype, and although the device might be expected in Q2 2013, there was still no word on pricing.

I got a demo of the application (see video) and it seems that Monitoring the needs of your plants using Flower Power  is super easy and fun. Parrot is famous for launching unusual devices that are well designed and fun to use (i.e. A.R. Drone), and the Flower Power is right in line with the company’s reputation.

TireHawk TPMS Kit Lets You Monitor Your Tires from Your Smartphone

While many newer vehicles have built-in tire pressure monitoring systems which alert you when you have a low tire, they’re not always that great. In my supposedly schmancy 2011 Mustang, the TPMS can only tell you that some tire is low, and not even by how much. How useless is that? Well now that know about this new aftermarket tire monitoring system, I might just have to order one.

tirehawk tpms 1

The TireHawk Bright+ TPMS Kit works wirelessly with your iOS or Android phone to communicate the exact tire pressure and temperature of each of your vehicle’s tires in real time. And you can configure it with your optimal settings to alert you if your tire is over or under its limits.

tirehawk tpms 2

The kit includes a set of four sensors which sit on the valve stems of your tires, along with a compact wireless gateway which you can plug into your car’s cigarette lighter or USB jack and acts as a bridge between the 433Mhz sensor network and the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network.

There’s no word on pricing or a release date for the TireHawk system at this point, but it did just hit the FCC for approval, so I imagine it will be released very soon.
