LG: Expect our 100-inch Hecto Laser TV in the US in March

LG’s 100-inch Hecto laser TV – using a special short-throw projector and standalone screen for bigger entertainment in your lounge – will arrive in the US come March, the company has confirmed at CES 2013 today. The Hecto system, which combines a Full HD laser projector with a screen, will go on sale in South Korea later in the month, though pricing is yet to be confirmed.

Big-screen TVs are getting bigger – our review of Samsung’s 75-inch ES9000 behemoth is evidence of that – but projectors are still the best way to get a huge picture at home. Unlike traditional projectors, however, the Hecto system doesn’t lose out on all the web-enabled features that Smart TVs now come with.

So, there’s not only a trio of HDMI inputs, an optical audio output, an RS-232 interface for automated home integration, and a digital TV tuner, but WiFi for streaming from Netflix, YouTube, and other services as we’ve seen on recent LG HDTVs. There’s also a pair of 10W speakers, though we’re guessing anybody serious about a 100-inch display will be equipping it with a surround sound system too.

LG isn’t saying how much the Hecto projector system will cost when it lands, either in their home country or elsewhere in the world later in Q1. However, the flexibility of being able to create a 100-inch display with just 22-inches between projector and screen is likely to win LG’s new home entertainment kit some fans.

Asus Taichi Ultrabook Sports Dual Screens

TAICHI31 09a Asus Taichi Ultrabook Sports Dual Screens[CES 2013] Something tells me that Asus is taking a very “Zen” approach to the naming convention of their mobile devices in the coming future, where the past has seen the Zenbook released, and this time around, it would be the Asus Taichi Ultrabook that delivers a dual display setup for the Ultrabook (something of a novelty, I might add) in addition to it functioning as a Multi-Touch tablet when the situation calls for it.

Basically, the slim and stylish Asus Taichi, whether it comes as the 11.6” model or the 13.3” model, it does not matter, will feature a brilliant double-sided LED-backlit IPS/FHD display. Sporting touchscreen functionality on the outside of the lid, the Asus Taichi will be able to open up to a whole host of new mobile possibilities, functioning as either an Ultrabook or a tablet, depending on the situation.

Hardware specifications include a 3rd generation Intel Core processor underneath the hood, speedy SSD storage and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, accompanied by a QWERTY backlit keyboard and a trackpad. Not only that, both displays will work independently of each other, meaning they can be used simultaneously – talk about sharing the workload with two users on a single device! Hopefully the battery life and processing power of the Asus Taichi is able to keep up…

Walmart announces new in-home disc-to-digital service at CES 2013

Gadget manufacturers may be the ones taking the limelight here at CES 2013, but retail chains are also making an appearance and announcing some cool new services. Case in point: Walmart just announced an expansion to their disc-to-digital service by bringing it to the comfort of your home, making it easier to convert your physical media.

The new in-home service is powered by video-streaming service VUDU, and it will give users the capability to convert DVD and Blu-ray movies to UltraViolet digital copies. UltraViolet is a free, cloud-based digital library that allows users improved flexibility with how and where they watch movies and TV shows that they’ve purchased.

Walmart is making the process fairly simple as well. Users just need to go to the VUDU website, or open up the desktop app on Windows or Mac, and then search for content that you already own in physical form. You’ll then have a couple of options to choose from: converting a DVD or Blu-ray to digital for $2 each, or upscale a standard-definition DVD to HD for $5 each.

The new service is set to launch sometime in the middle of February, but the VUDU mobile app is available for download in both the iTunes App Store and Google Play. Walmart has announced that it’s giving customers who sign up for a new VUDU account 10 free pre-selected movies when they either sign up for an UltraViolet account or link to an existing account.

Griffin’s iTrip Auto Transmitter Now Streams Harman Aha Content

Drivers stuck with just an FM radio in their rides can now access Harman’s Aha streaming content through Griffin’s iTrip Auto transmitter. The service, which includes over 30,000 stations covering everything from music, to news, to audiobooks, has typically only been available in new vehicles or aftermarket in-dash stereos. But iTrip Auto users can now throw off the shackles of their limited local radio stations by simply downloading Aha’s free iOS app and taking over an unused frequency on their dial. [Griffin] More »

Plastic Logic and Intel team on PaperTab to finally undermine trees

Plastic Logic, Intel, and Queen’s University have revealed a new tablet using a flexible plastic display, the PaperTab, with a 10.7-inch near-indestructible display and a Core i5 processor. The PaperTab, part of Canadian university Queen’s Human Media Lab research, aims to finally replace paper with a color display and an innovative new interface which tries to mimic physical stacks of documents.

IMG_2477

The teams call those stacks “PaperTabs” and the eponymous slate can show several of them, on-screen, at the same time. That streamlines workflow, so for instance you can easily attach a photo to an email by previewing them at the same time and simply tapping them.

However, there’s also support for less traditional methods of control. For instance, flex-sensors allow for an email to be sent if the top corner of the screen is bent; you could also trigger a send by dropping the PaperTab into your outbox tray on your desk.

IMG_2452

Multiple PaperTab units can be placed side-by-side, with the on-screen interface automatically extending to take advantage of the extra real-state, while the UI can be stretched out with simple gestures. There’s also interpretation of physical distance: for instance, when the PaperTab is out of reach, the interface switches to an icon mode to show what’s happening across all apps.

As you might have guessed, PaperTab is just a prototype right now, though Intel, Plastic Logic, and the Queen’s University team say the technology is all functional. Exactly what sort of battery life you could expect from a commercial product based on the hardware, and what kind of price you’d be looking at, is unclear; we’ll find out more at CES 2013 this week.
