Withings introduces Smart Body Analyzer and Smart Activity Tracker

Putting in the effort to get healthy can’t usually be described as fun, and when you add that to the fact that it can be difficult to track everything you should be tracking, you have the recipe for a bunch of goals that never get completed. Luckily, CES is here and Withings has just introduced a pair of new products that can track almost every health-related statistic you can think of. If you’ve been struggling to get in shape, these products might be worth a look, if only because they should make the process of tracking your progress a bit easier.

We’ll start right off with the Smart Body Analyzer, a new scale that measures your weight, body fat, and heart rate. These statistics are then stored in the Analyzer’s companion iOS or Android app using the scale’s built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modules. This means that you can use the app to share your progress with your doctor, or with the social media world if you’re feeling a little brave.

What’s interesting about this scale is that it’s meant to be put in your bedroom, instead of the bathroom. The reason for this is because the scale also monitors the air quality of the room, measuring temperature and CO2 levels. By measuring the air quality, you could potentially get a better night’s sleep, which in turn leads to better health. Position Control will help you make sure you’re using the scale properly, while the app is compatible with a number of third-party health tracking services, which means you can have all of your statistics in one place.

Then we have the Smart Activity Tracker, which will keep track of your “number of steps taken, strides run, distances covered, calories burned, and quality of sleep,” in addition to providing pulse tracking. Of course, this also syncs with Withings’ Health Monitor app, which can then alert you if you’ve spent too long a time being inactive and can even differentiate between moderate activity and vigorous activity.

The Smart Body Analyzer will be available in Q1 2013 and will sport a price tag of $149. No specific release date for that one yet, and unfortunately we aren’t sure when the Smart Activity Tracker will be launching and how much it will cost. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more from CES 2013!

LG announces that all of its LCD TVs will be LED-based from now on (update)

LG announces its moving 100 percent to LEDs for its TVs, waves goodbye to Plasma

We’re here at LG’s CES 2013 press conference, where the company has just announced that it’s only going to be using LEDs for its LCD HDTVs from now on. The company will still be producing Plasma TVs, so don’t worry if you’re still wedded to the standard. At the same time, it’s also showing off its second-generation Cinema 3DTV design, that’s packing an even thinner bezel (if such a thing is possible).

Toshiba Unveils Its L9300 Ultra HD 4K LED TV Series

Untitled Toshiba Unveils Its L9300 Ultra HD 4K LED TV Series[CES 2013] Japanese consumer electronics conglomerate, Toshiba, is proving that it is leading the TV innovation by taking the wraps off its 4K LED TV series today at CES 2013. Enter the Toshiba L9300 Ultra HD 4K LED TV Series. We’ve seen the 84-inch model, which looks amazingly crisp and clear. The color rendering is beautiful too. Unfortunately, the room was pretty dark, so we couldn’t judge the build quality and evaluate the actual thickness of the chassis. But nevertheless, the stand seems elegantly designed and surprisingly discreet, despite having to support such a huge display. (more…)

HMDX Jam Plus and Burst hands-on

Here at CES, we stumbled upon a smaller company that’s notorious for all sorts of wireless and wired portable speakers that come in different shapes and sizes, as well as a bevy of bright colors. HDMX had some of their new products for 2013 out on display, and we ended up getting some hands-on time with their Jam Plus wireless Bluetooth speaker and the Burst wired portable speaker.

The Jam Plus is what you see above. It’s a wireless Bluetooth portable speaker and it works with devices from up to 30 feet away. It also uses the company’s Jam2 technology so that you can pair up a second Jam Plus speaker for true stereo sound — perfect for putting a speaker on either side of your bed for the ultimate stereo alarm clock.

image0001

HMDX claims that the battery lasts 4 hours of wireless audio playing, but if you feel like saving a bit on battery and don’t mind being tethered, the Jam Plus provides a line-in port to connect your device directly to the speaker. The Jam Plus will be available sometime this spring at a price of $59.99.

The Burst is another one of the company’s newest products (pictured above), and it’s even smaller than the Jam Plus. It doesn’t have any wireless options, but it does have a retractable 3.5mm headphone jack so that you can plug directly into the speaker. What’s most impressive is its size — it’s extremely tiny, but it packs a huge punch. Testing it out on the show floor proved to be successful. Even with the noise level of all the people around us, the Burst speaker gets loud, and all this will provide around 8 hours of listening time. The Burst will be priced at just $24.99 and will be available this spring.

INRIX Parking app helps you locate parking spots

03 INRIX Parking app helps you locate parking spots[CES 2013] Tired of not knowing where to park whenever you go out? INRIX has got the solution just for you. The company announced the launch of its parking navigation service: INRIX Parking. Since a lot of time in the city is wasted by drivers looking for parking, INRIX Parking hopes to eliminate that problem.

Partnering with ParkMe and Parkopedia, INRIX Parking is a parking navigation service that points drivers to the entrance of their preferred location closest to their destination, and even provides rate and availability information.

At the moment, the INRIX Parking database only has locations in North America and European countries.

In addition to its new parking navigation service, INRIX announced some updates for its Traffic App for iOS and Android, INRIX powered Kenwood in-dash receivers, and Premium Traffic Services in China.

Targus Touch Pen

Touch Pen Win 8 Screen Targus Touch Pen[CES 2013] To see a company like Targus move into the world of stylii is encouraging, as this means that Targus wants to expand their business acumen with the introduction of a new device that targets Windows 8-powered devices, which they have called the Targus Touch Pen for Windows 8. Basically, the Targus Touch Pen is said to be the only solution of its kind to transform any Windows 8 notebook into a touchscreen device, without the need to purchase a new laptop in order to enjoy the touch features that Windows 8 touts. Seems to me that this is shaping up to be a retro upgrade for folks who have already made the jump over to the Windows 8 platform, but did not want to fork out a premium for a touchscreen version of the notebook late last year. Trakdot Luggage Tracker: Never Lose Your Bag Again

Do you ever worry about losing your luggage when you travel? Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to know exactly where you bag was all the time? Well thanks to a nifty new gadget, you can spot the location of your checked bag from your smartphone.

trakdot

Announced just in time for CES 2013 by GlobaTrac, the Trakdot is a small tracking device you slip into your luggage, and can view city-specific information on the location of your bag using your Android or iOS smartphone, via SMS or E-mail. You can also just surf to Trakdot.com to view the location of your bag. There’s also an app which can alert you as your bag gets close to the carousel at the airport – a common source of frustration for travelers.

The Trakdot will be available this March for $49.95(USD), although there will be a $8.99 activation fee and a $12.99 annual fee per device for using the tracking service. Unfortunately, that price is per device – hopefully they’ll offer a discounted rate for tracking multiple TrakDots at some point.

Fitbit Flex takes on Jawbone UP with Bluetooth activity tracker

Fitbit has revealed its latest take on the activity tracker, the Fitbit Flex, a new challenger to the Jawbone UP complete with Bluetooth 4.0 for real-time sync with a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Android device. The tracker slots neatly into a waterproof wristband, or can be removed and clipped on elsewhere, tracking steps taken, distance travelled, calories burned, and even sleep, and giving at-a-glance feedback on the wearer’s performance using LEDs.

fitbit_flex

Those lights show 20-percent increments of the daily goal, which is set by the individual wearer. However, the low-power Bluetooth 4.0 is used to ping more complex data over to Fitbit’s Flex app, with various graphs and graphics to show how close you are to your targets for steps, calorie burn, and other factors, as well as how long you’ve been sleeping, how many times you woke up, and how efficient your sleep was.

fitbit_flex_sync

The Flex can also wake the wearer up with a silent alarm, using its sleep tracking abilities to automatically figure out what the best time to vibrate is, based on how fresh you’ll be feeling at any point. The new Flex app – which also works with the Fitbit One and Zip, and is available for Android for the first time – has social integration too, with activity badges, and support for challenges between friends and family.

fitbit_flex_mac

There’s also support for a food log, allowing the wearer’s diet to be recorded each day, and compared with activity and overall health. However, Flex can also integrate with third-party apps, such as Endomondo, LoseIt, MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal, and Sparkpeople.

Fitbit Flex is up for preorder now, priced at $99.95, and is expected to ship in the spring of this year. The Android Flex app will arrive by the end of February.

AcerCloud expands support to iOS with new features

It was at last year’s CES that Acer was seen touting the features of AcerCloud, but this year, the company has more to talk about. Acer has announced that AcerCloud will soon be expanding to iOS, meaning consumers will be able to share files between Apple’s mobile OS, Android, and Windows. This platform expansion wasn’t the only thing Acer announced today, though, as AcerCloud will also be getting a few interesting new features.

AcerCloud

Chief among these new features is perhaps the Remote Files app, which will allow users to access their Windows-based PCs from any of their devices. With Acer Cloud Docs, users will be able to push their Microsoft Office documents to their other devices, making them downloadable and readable on iOS or Android. Acer will make these documents available for 30 days after they were last modified, and unlike AcerCloud as a whole, there isn’t any storage limit when you’re working with AcerCloud Docs.

Of course, your AcerCloud storage limit is determined by how much free space you have on your PC’s hard drive, which potentially means that you can far exceed the storage capacity offered by many other cloud services. Considering that AcerCloud is a free service for Acer PC owners, that sounds like a pretty great deal, though you are essentially still paying for the service in terms of additional hard drive space.

Other features announced today include PicStream, which is a lot like AcerCloud Docs in that it will push pictures taken with one device to all of your machines (which then remain available for 30 days), and AcerCloud clear.fi, a feature that will let you sync your media libraries – music included – between all of your devices. This AcerCloud update will be available for download sometime this month, and Acer says that the new version of AcerCloud will be bundled with all of the company’s PCs starting in Q2 2013.
