NVIDIA Grid Announced

nvidia grid NVIDIA Grid Announced[CES 2013] NVIDIA is not quite done with their press conference just yet, and this time we are looking at the birth of Skynet. No, we’re kidding, it would be the rise of cloud computing, and over the course of time, the infrastructure cost has been lowered dramatically recently. Gamers do ask themselves how come cloud computing did not bring that much benefit in terms of gaming, but things look set to change with the introduction of NVIDIA Grid. Basically, the NVIDIA Grid is a rack that is packed full of GPUs, and has been equated to be roughly the equivalent of 700 Xbox 360s where processing power is concerned.

During the demonstration, it was shown that the user interface has been rendered in the cloud (similar to what Vudu offers), which is great since clients are then able to be ported in a jiffy. Some product pimpin’ was done where LG’s Smart TV saw the NVIDIA Grid client ported over, where the TV then ran games onver the cloud in a fluid manner. Granted, this is just a side-scroller, but it is impressive enough. Following that, an Android client that ran NVIDIA Grid showed the game where the gamer last left it, meaning the client’s hardware does not matter any more since all it does is stream data back and forth.

NVIDIA is working to grow their list of partners for the NVIDIA Grid system, and we do look forward to see how widespread NVIDIA Grid’s adoption rate would be.

ION Talking Point Conference Call Speakerphone Shaped Like A UFO

ION Talking Point Conference Call Speakerphone Shaped Like A UFO

[CES 2013] We’re not entirely sure why recent bluetooth conference call speakerphones seem are often shaped like UFOs, but who are we to comment on design choices of accessory manufacturers as we’re sure they have a good reason to create such futuristic speakerphones. ION is another manufacturer who thought their new bluetooth conference call speakerphone would benefit from a UFO design.

ION’s Talking Point is a conference call station for mobile phones whose microphone captures voices from any angle, which we’re sure is exactly why they decided for a UFO design. The Talking Point’s speaker is top-facing, which makes it easy for users to listen to the call as well as communicate clearly.

The Talking Point has a minimalist design that is highlighted by touch-sensitive controls where you can simply place your finger on top of the control, and the Talking Point will perform the action without needing you to push down your finger. You’ll be able to higher or lower the volume, mute the call, change Bluetooth devices and answer / end the call.

ION’s Talking Point will be available this June for $149.99 and will come in two colors: white and black.

HP Pavilion 20xi to 27xi IPS LCD Monitors

hp 2401 xi 04 640x424 HP Pavilion 20xi to 27xi IPS LCD Monitors

CES 2013] The HP Pavilion line has always been about “bang for the buck”, so introducing IPS displays in that line-up makes sense. Most of the models (22xi, 23xi, 25xi and 27xi) feature a 1080p resolution, but the smallest 20xi does not (it tops at 1600×900), and it’s probably OK for a mid-range 20″ monitor. All of them offer a variety of input options, namely VGA, HDMI, DVI-D.

The IPS is the star of the show here, because if it wasn’t for that special detail, the rest of the specifications aren’t out of the ordinary, and the design itself is decent, but not fantastic either. That said, check the prices: the 20xi will cost $129.99 and the 27xi will sell for an MSRP of $339.99 which seems to land  right in the normal price range (street price) for this type of IPS monitors. What do you think? What’s your monitor brand of choice these days?

HP Envy 27-inch Monitor

hp envy 27 monitor 04 640x424 HP Envy 27 inch Monitor[CES 2013] At CES 2013 HP is launching a new 27″ LCD IPS monitor under the Envy brand. The HP Envy 27″ display has been designed to look good on a desk, and one of the primary objectives of the designers was to make the bezels very thin. It’s hard to see on the photos, but if you’re not familiar with the IPS display technology, it is a type of LCD display which has been optimized for having great view angles and color reproduction. For example, mobile devices like the iPad use an IPS display. At the moment, this is one of the best technology available for large displays as OLED is simple too expensive at that size. (more…)

HP U160 15.6-inch LED Backlit Portable Monitor

up u160 mobile monitor 02 640x424 HP U160 15.6 inch LED Backlit Portable Monitor

[CES 2013] The HP U160 is a USB powered notebook monitor that can be folded inside a very practical case which acts as a stand when unfolded. The thin, light and elegant body weighs only 3.4 pounds and is only 1.02 inches thick.

The HP U160 looks like the perfect monitor to have when on-the-go, and during the briefing with HP, we thought that it could be a useful gadget to bring for our trips to international conferences like CES, MWC or CEATEC, to increase our productivity. The 15.6 inch LCD display features 1366×768 resolution, 16:9 ratio and is powered via USB 2.0 or above. When we saw it in action, the responsiveness was good and the framerate was fluid.

The u160 will be available in January for only $179 (starting price), I am sure that the attractive price and design will make it one of the sought-after device for road warriors. Last but not least, the device is ENERGY STAR qualified, meaning it is quite eco-friendly: it is made with arsenic free glass and BFR/PVC free plastics and mercury-free LED backlighting.

HP ProDisplay Series Means Business

hp prodisplay ces2012 02 640x424 HP ProDisplay Series Means Business[CES 2013] The thing with computers is that you need a screen, and when it comes to business, companies want something that is cost-effective, predictable and easy to maintain. That’s what HP is aiming for with this HP ProDisplay line of monitors that feature four models: P191 (18.5″), P201m (20″) and P221 (21.5″). Seriously, call me a naive consumer, but I don’t really understand why there is a need for four models to cover a price range of $129 to $179 and size variations that seem relatively small.

In any case, CTOs may find it comforting that while these monitors won’t win any design awards, they have plenty of “Green” labels, including: Energy Star, EPEAT Gold, BFR/PVC-Free, Arsenic Free and Mercury-free LED. Well, there’s nothing wrong with doing business without polluting (too much), right?

Toshiba Makes Ultra HD LED TV Mark At CES 2013

toshiba ultra hd Toshiba Makes Ultra HD LED TV Mark At CES 2013[CES 2013] The TV segment has always been an innovative one, and it is definitely not one industry that is willing to rest on its laurels. Well, Toshiba intends to expand their reach and muscle their way into the Ultra HD market thanks to the announcement of their LG-rivalling 84-inch 4K LED TV. Coming under the umbrella that is the L9300 series, this bad boy will also be made available to those who do not have such deep pockets, where it will arrive in 65-inch and 58-inch models as well.

Out later this summer, there is no word on pricing details just yet, but you know for sure that none of these are going to come cheap or affordable at all. A Toshiba representative claimed that the secret to Ultra HD would be the processing, although there would not be much native content at launch. Underneath the hood would lie a CEVO 4K Quad+Dual Core Processor and CQ Engine. We look forward to this monster of a TV ship later this year, and hope that resolution of media content would be able to catch up with the resolution count in due time.

NVIDIA GRID revealed to change cloud gaming forever

This week NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsung Huang spoke at CES 2013 about the potential of the gaming industry, making it clear that the cloud was the next great place for that industry to go. With that, he revealed NVIDIA GRID. The beast you’re seeing in the images below works with 20 GRID servers per rack, 240 NVIDIA GPUs, working at 200TFLOPS, this equaling approximately 700 Xbox 360s.

P1050163

This machine is what NVIDIA calls “revolutionary cloud-gaming architecture”, and they proved it with a television connected to an Ethernet cord alone. This television was an LG Smart TV connected to the cloud, allowing the user to render graphics completely in the cloud. This allows you, in the near future, to play full graphics games via the internet from anywhere.

Streaming gaming, with NVIDIA’s system shown this week, will be able to be as impressive visually and in-use as your console or PC connected at home. This was also revealed in an NVIDIA Tegra 3-packing ASUS Transformer Prime. This tablet works with an NVIDIA GRID app that connects to the cloud.

With this system, essentially any device, not just a smart TV or a PC, will be able to play full-feature, full-graphics games in the cloud. What we’ve seen here is being presented by NVIDIA as the next generation in gaming and, from what we’ve seen, truly appears to be prepared to change the way we play games from top to bottom.

Liquipel 2.0 nanocoating debuts with improved water protection, matches IPX7 and beyond (video)

Liquipel 20 nanocoating debuts with improved water protection, corrosion resistance and durability

We were rather stoked when Liquipel brought its “watersafe” nanocoating service from California to South East Asia in fall 2012, but it turns out that the Santa Ana-based company had another surprise lined up for us later on. At Startup Debut 2013 in Las Vegas today we saw the announcement of Liquipel 2.0, which claims to have “significant advancements in durability, corrosion resistance and water protection” than its predecessor. Specifically, the new version is “up to 100 times more effective… while maintaining component integrity and RF sensitivity.” Obviously we had to see it to believe it, and to our surprise, this time Liquipel had a demo that let us submerge a 2.0-coated iPhone 5 under two feet of water — you can see us going bonkers with it in the video after the break.

According to Managing Director Sam Winkler, a device thoroughly treated with Liquipel 2.0 can actually achieve a liquid protection rating of at least IPX7: immersion at a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. While the iPhone 5 we tortured did eventually take in too much water and thus disabled the touch panel, it quickly came back to life after we shook off some of the water. Winkler added that his company’s now offering its 4ft x 4ft “Liquipods” for shops that want to provide the Liquipel treatment themselves, but it’ll be a while before all existing partners — mostly outside the US — can be upgraded to 2.0. That said, interested customers can already get the 2.0 treatment in the US.

One final note: it turns out that Jaybird also uses Liquipel during the assembly of its sports headphones. Hopefully we’ll see more products treated with the same goodness in the near future.
