Lenovo ThinkPad Helix official: 11.6-inch reversible screen, arrives next month for $1,499+

DNP EMBARGO Lenovo ThinkPad Helix

The Lenovo ThinkPad Helix has been a known entity for some time, first showing up on the company’s Israeli website and more recently stopping by the FCC with AT&T LTE in tow. The device is no longer an enigma, as Lenovo is pulling back the curtain on the 11.6-inch convertible Ultrabook, which will go on sale in late February for $1,499 and up.

Like the famously flippable ThinkPad Yoga, the Helix can be used in several different positions. Tablet and Ultrabook modes are a given, but users can also flip the tablet 180 degrees and snap it back in to the base, essentially providing a stand for using the device as a slate. In addition to supporting touch input, the Helix offers a bundled pen (complete with a slot for storing) for tapping away at the 1080p Gorilla Glass display. Speaking of the panel, it boasts IPS technology — and Lenovo says it’s “the brightest screen in the ThinkPad brand portfolio.”

Along with the just-introduced ThinkPad Edge E431 and E531, the Helix sports a new trackpad that forgoes the secondary buttons meant to be used with the TrackPoint. Instead, these buttons are built into the clickpad, though the pointing stick is still on board. We imagine this change will upset many ThinkPad devotees, but given that we haven’t seen a final production unit, we’re not ready to pass judgement on the update.

The highest-end configuration will run a Core i7 processor, and Lenovo says you can expect up to 10 hours of battery life. Other specs include a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-MP front-facing shooter, NFC for tapping to share and — as expected — LTE connectivity. The tablet weighs 1.8 pounds on its own, and the whole Ultrabook comes in at under four. Take a closer look at this convertible in our hands-on gallery.

I Just Controlled a Computer with My Eyeballs and It Was Amazing

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix and IdeaPad Yoga 11S revealed to flip for Windows 8

The Lenovo notebook lineup is vast here at the start of 2013 at the Consumer Electronics Show, and what with the ThinkPad Helix offering a whole new way to work with a convertible PC, the Windows 8 era appears to be in full swing. With the ThinkPad Helix you’ve got not just a new tablet, not just a new Ultrabook, but a machine that acts as both with a third way to utilize the Windows 8 touch universe in a whole new way. Then there’s the IdeaPad Yoga 11S, an upgrade of the Yoga lineup from 2012, here bringing tiny lightning claps in a whole new set of colors, too, including Cotton Candy Pink.

ThinkPad Helix

With the ThinkPad Helix you’ll be working with a high performance Ultrabook with a detachable 11.6-inch tablet creating what Lenovo assures is “the thinnest full-function Intel 3rd generation Core tablet with vPro” on the market today. This machine weighs in at just 835 grams and works with “Stand Mode” unique to any sort of device in this class – in this case it means that you’ve got the device connected to its keyboard dock like normal, looking like a laptop, then you “Rip and Flip”. This means you detach the tablet from the base, turn it around, and attach it with the keyboard facing its back, standing it up like a pro, still able to use the ports along the keyboard dock’s sides.

This machine also has a five button clickpad – 20 percent more than any ThinkPad that’s come before it – as well as the brightest display in ThinkPad brand history. The ThinkPad Helix has a 1080p IPS display and works with optional 4G LTE connectivity, meaning your favorite mobile brands COULD be carrying it soon – we shall see! This unit also works with NFC – tap in! The ThinkPad Helix will be starting at $1,499 USD and will be available starting in late February 2013.

IdeaPad Yoga 11S

The IdeaPad Yoga 11S works with an 11.6-inch HD IPS display with 10-finger multi-touch capabilities as well as many abilities that’ve previously been available only on the larger Yoga 13. This machine has Motion Control abilities like a hand-swipe in front of its webcam to move through photos, videos, and documents. Using Lenovo Transition you can automatically open applications in full-screen mode when the device is in one of its three non-notebook modes.

These three modes outside the standard notebook mode are called tent, stand, or tablet – that’s flat with the touchscreen out, folded up like a tent with the touchscreen out, and backward with the touchscreen out as well. The IdeaPad Yoga 11S comes with the same exterior build (casing-wise) as the Yoga 13, but now pushing forth with fabulous new color combinations including Cotton Candy Pink, Silver Grey, and Clementine Orange. The IdeaPad Yoga 11S will be available starting at $799 USD beginning in June 2013.

Griffin Crayola Light Marker hands-on

Today at CES, Griffin is showing off a new product that shows the efforts of a partnership with Crayola. It’s called the Light Marker, and it’s essentially a laser pointer on steroids. Griffin demoed it for us today, and while it still has its bugs and quirks, we can’t imagine that a whole lot of kids would be disappointed with it.

image0007

The Light Marker pen relies entirely on the iPad‘s front-facing camera, and it simply shows a red dot on the iPad’s display that shows where the “cursor” is — think the Wiimote, but not for gaming in particular. The pen and the accompanying app work together to create any kind of drawing that your mind conjures up.

image0009

The light marker will cost only $30, and the company is also outing what they call the Digital Activity Center and Color & Play Workstation for $40 and $20, respectively. These should arrive sometime in the spring, and the specialized iPad apps for the Light Marker should arrive later this month for $3.

Griffin Updates StudioConnect Music-Creation iOS Accessory To Support Lightning Connector

Griffin Updates StudioConnect Music Creation iOS Accessory To Support Lightning Connector[CES 2013] Up until now, if you wanted to create any kind of music on your iOS device seeing how powerful and portable they can be compared to actually recording in a music studio, you needed to stick with last-generation technology as all music-creating iOS accessories were only compatible with the previous 30-pin connector. Now, musicians can finally update their iOS devices to those with the Lightning connector as Griffin is introducing an entire suite of accessories that will allow you to create music with the latest and greatest iOS devices.

Griffin’s popular all-in-one audio interface, StudioConnect, has received the Lightning-compatible treatment as you’ll be able to once again connect your guitars, stereo audio and MIDI devices to your 4th generation iPad and iPad mini. Users of the device will also be able to use devices with either RCA connectors and headphones along with separate volume controls.

On-the-go music creators will be able to pick up the StudioConnect with Lightning will be available in Spring 2013 at $149.99. Again, that price for admission is well worth it considering how much music you can create from your iPad fourth generation and iPad Mini from the comfort of your couch.

Genius Gila gaming mouse hands-on

Genius Gila gaming mouse handson

What does it feel like holding a CES Design and Innovation nominee in your hand? If Genius is any indication, it feels an awful lot like a $100 mouse. A pretty nice $100 mouse, mind you — one with all sorts of flashing lights and rubber-injected sides. The Gila GX Gaming Series fits nicely in the hand, as one might expect from a peripheral designed for extended MMO marathons. It’s also got a nice weight to it already, but if that’s not enough, that’s no problem: there’s a trap door in the bottom that opens up. Inside, you can slot a tray of watch battery-sized weights, which pop in and out to adjust the thing to a suitable level, up to 30 grams.

Also cool is the DPI gauge on top of the mouse, to let you know where you currently stand in the 200 to 8,200 range. There are 12 buttons jammed into the thing, and as you’d imagine, there’s button assignment and macro options, so you can set up to 72 keys on the thing. There’s also a slew of color options for the various lights on the mouse, in case the glut of buttons aren’t showy enough for your gaming needs.

Sadly, Genius isn’t quite ready to debut the second generation Ring Mouse, but we’ve been promised a glimpse in the very near future.

Seagate’s $200 Wireless Plus 1TB hard drive streams content everywhere, includes 10-hour battery

Seagate's $200 Wireless Plus 1TB hard drive streams content everywhere, includes 10hour battery

A (very) early slip through the FCC’s database uncovered Seagate’s Wireless Plus drive several months ago, but here at CES, the company is finally ready to take the official wraps off of the aforesaid drive. It’s a portable 1TB affair, shipping with USB 3.0 support and offering up the ability to stream music and video to practically anything courtesy of its inbuilt wireless module and 10-hour battery. In our testing, the unit did everything it promised, but those with an iOS device will enjoy enhanced usability via the gratis app.

In essence, it’s a slimmed version of the GoFlex Satellite from 2011, enabling users to load up bookoodles of content and then create an ad hoc WiFi network in order to stream it to nearby tablets (iPad, Kindle Fire, etc.), phones, Smart TVs and items that support AirPlay / DLNA. While the cloud seems suitable enough for retrieving content, being on a flight to Dubai or roughing it in cellular black hole throws a kink in those plans. And that, friends, is what Seagate hopes will attract you to its newest $200 HDD. The full presser is embedded after the break, and those who are already sold can pick one up starting now at Amazon and Best Buy.

Griffin PowerDock 5 hands-on

Earlier today we told you about Griffin‘s new PowerDock 5 charging station, and today at CES, we ended up getting our hands on the new device. Essentially, it’s a multi-device charging station that includes transparent plastic walls that help keep your devices organized and separated for quick and easy charging of all your mobile devices.

image0000

The PowerDock 5 charges up five devices at a time (hence its name), and includes five separate bays, each with an accompanying USB port. On the bottom is where the AC adapter plugs in, and there’s two short pillars to wrap the AC cable around to shorten it if need be. You’ll also find a small notch on the end where the cable sits in so that the PowerDock sits flat on the table.

image0001

Essentially, any mobile device will fit in the five slots, including smartphones and tablets. It’s also incredibly lightweight, almost too light — it feels like it could break any second, and might have the tendency to slide around on your desk since there’s no weight to it, but the rubber coating on the bottom may help alleviate that. The PowerDock 5 will be available this spring for $99.

Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC hands-on

This week the folks at Lenovo have made it clear that they want to get into your living room, and they want to do it with a massive gaming Table – you read that right. This machine is known as the Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC, a beast of a device with a 27-inch touchscreen and the ability to work upright, on its side, and with a set of accessories that make it a full-on board game-capable beast.

20130106_151552

The IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC’s full details can be found in our original reveal post, it also making the case for Lenovo’s newest term: Phygital. This term makes for the mix of physical game playing and digital interaction, with this gaming table allowing you to play table hockey, dice-base board games, and everything in-between.

20130106_151617

The machine we had a peek at here in its current form had fabulous viewing angles and a rather realistically nice setup – in other words, it felt as though we’d really, actually use it in the real world. Not such a thing can be said about all massive touchscreen devices such as this. What we got from our first experience was this: we definitely need one to be able to play Candy Land in the future.

As it stands, we’ll be playing some of Lenovo’s own games as well as a set of games that have been optimized for play on this device specifically by 3rd party systems. Can’t wait for the real push!
