Hyundai to bring Google Maps integration to upcoming car models

Earlier today, Kia Motors and Google announced a partnership that would bring Google Maps to new car models. However, Hyundai has also made a deal with the search giant to bring Google Maps integration to their own vehicles as well, including some pretty awesome features, like Send To Car and voice search.

Hyundai

Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics platform currently offers a variety of features that make driving more convenient and information-packed, but the addition of the Google Maps and Places API should make the experience even more feature-filled. One of the coolest features is Send to Car, where users can look up a map on their computers, and then send it to their car’s navigation system.

Users can also voice search for a point of interest, as well as any other local search from the system. This will no doubt be a huge convenience for travelers, who now won’t have to fiddle with buttons on the navigation system, and simply just speak out directions or search for locations using just their voice.

Hyundai will demo the new technology and the Google Maps integration at CES next week. We’re guessing Hyundai will start implementing the new technology in 2014 models, but the company hasn’t yet announced what cars will receive the integration.

LG Hom-Bot Square Vacuums To Hit CES 2013 Showfloor

hombot square LG Hom Bot Square Vacuums To Hit CES 2013 Showfloor[CES 2013] Sure, we will definitely take a closer look at all of the wonderful devices that will be released at CES later next week, but let us not forget that home essentials such as vacuum cleaners, too, will be on parade there. In fact, LG will showcase their latest square robotic vacuum cleaner under the Hom-Bot Square range, and will do so in an entertaining manner by demonstrating its incredible maneuverability with a well-choreographed dance routine at select intervals over the four day technological showcase.

The LG Hom-Bot Square will deliver a significant upgrade in cleaning performance, where this is made possible thanks to LG’s recently designed Corner Master. Some of the features include improved sensors and longer brushes, while ultrasonic and infrared sensors let it detect the right obstacles to avoid, with Dual Eye 2.0 cameras that are able to scan and map rooms accurately even in the dark. Looks like the next generation of vacuum cleaners will be square but smart, and we hope to get more details like pricing and availability soon. [Press Release]

HTC M7 flagship handset tipped for CES 2013

We’ve already heard a handful of rumors about HTC‘s upcoming flagship device, the M7, and today we’re hearing more buzz that the device will make an appearance at CES 2013 next week. Previously, we heard that the upcoming phone was going to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February, so we’re definitely not complaining about the opportunity to meet the new device sooner.

htc-580x435

The rumor comes from XDA member Football, who revealed some of the details on Twitter, and has been a reliable source for past HTC rumors as well. Aside from being announced at CES 2013, Football suggests that the M7 “might have screen buttons instead of hardware touch buttons,” which would definitely see HTC going in a different direction than past devices.

Other than that, though, the M7 should be quite the robust machine. We’re looking at a 4.7-inch 1080p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz, a 13MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, Beats Audio, and a 2,300mAh battery.

We’re not sure if “M7″ will be the phone’s actual name or not, but we’re guessing it’s simply just a codename for the time being, since “M7″ doesn’t really sound like the name of an HTC device. Either way, we’ll keep our eyes peeled at CES next week and see if HTC has anything special up their sleeves during the event.

Huawei Released 85% Of Its Devices Under Its Own Brand In 2012 Compared To 20% In 2011

Huawei Shenzhen

Slowly but surely, Chinese smartphones are making their way into consumers’ hands. While Huawei is a leading infrastructure company, it started designing and manufacturing smartphones only recently. So far, the company preferred to sell white-label smartphones to carriers around the world. But in 2012, Huawei has shipped 85 percent of its devices under its own brand, compared to a scant 20 percent in 2011.

Chief Marketing Officer Shao Yang declared to Le Monde that the company plans to become one of the top 5 smartphone brands in 2014 and one of the top 3 in 2016.

That’s why Huawei invested more than 200 million dollars for its branding strategy. According to an IDC report, Samsung is currently the leading brand in China, followed by four Chinese companies — Lenovo, Coolpad, ZTE and Huawei. Apple, despite its apparent popularity, is sitting in sixth place.

At the same time, the Chinese market is very promising. Evidence of this lies in growth prospects. China Mobile (which, if you’ll recall, is the world’s largest wireless carrier), only has 79 million 3G customers out of its 700 million subscriber base. Huawei doesn’t want to miss out on that opportunity, as many subscribers will switch to a smartphone in the coming years. It is a good revenue opportunity as well, as margins are usually higher with smartphones compared to feature phones.

The branding effort is still a work in progress as Microsoft, Apple and Samsung spent more than a billion dollars each in advertising campaigns in 2012. But Huawei has a few assets compared to many of its competitors. Like Samsung, LG and RIM, Huawei manufactures its own phones. Apple, Nokia, HTC, Motorola and others rely on third-party manufacturers like Foxconn, which increases costs and reduces flexibility.

The other key advantage is that Huawei is a Chinese company. As current market shares show, there is a national bias in favor of Chinese brands when it comes to smartphones in China. Huawei can easily become an important entry-level smartphone brand in the world, after conquering the Chinese market. Even though it is one of the lesser-known brands in the U.S., the company should showcase new devices at CES next week and will lay out the company’s strategy for 2013.

dreamGEAR i.Sound Glow Bluetooth Speaker Turns Your iPhone into a Discotheque

I just bought myself a bunch of those cool Philips Hue wireless lightbulbs, so I can now see the appeal of adding colored lights to a room to set the mood. But if you’re looking for more of a disco feeling rather than just solid colors, you might want to check out this new Bluetooth speaker coming from dreamGEAR.

isound glow

While it borrows its name from a dated old iPod nano dock, the upcoming i.Sound Glow Sound Bluetooth Speaker is a horse of several different colors. For starters, it’s a wireless audio speaker that works with smartphones, tablets and MP3 players. It can be connected via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm audio jack and music plays through its pair of full-range speakers. But what really sets it apart are the six glowing LED orbs on its face which can be set to automatically change color to go with your tunes. You’ll also be able to set the orbs to cycle through pre-programmed color patterns if you’d prefer.

Pricing and a release date for the i.Sound Glow Sound Bluetooth Speaker haven’t been announced yet, but dreamGEAR will likely be showing it at CES from January 8 to 11, 2013.

LG unveils new Cinema 3D Smart TV range

CES 2013 is the platform where LG will state their intention in the TV arena, where that is when they unveil their new range of Cinema 3D Smart TVs. It is said that the 2013 range will deliver easier content access alongside sharing capability, and when coupled with an updated Magic Remote, one ought to be able to experience a simplified, intuitive user experience. It does not matter on the kind of budget that you have (or don’t), LG should have a little bit of something for everyone. Some of the models that we do know which will break the bank and will be paraded there include LG’s 84-inch Ultra HD and 55-inch OLED TVs, where the latter is said to cost approximately $10,000 a pop after conversion from the listed price in South Korea.

There is a new and improved SmartShare feature that allows users to mirror or transfer content from smart devices to LG Smart TVs using a host of connectivity options, where among them include WiDi and Miracast. I guess there is no excuse now not to hook up something to your TV, no? The 2013 range will also enhance inter-device sharing further by implementing Tag On, where this feature is said to be able to connect a couple of devices immediately for speedy media sharing. In order to make use of Tag On, all you need to do is hold a smartphone or other NFC-enabled device against the NFC sticker on a Cinema 3D Smart TV, and voila! Magic happens, or so that is what people from two centuries ago would think.

Not only that, the 2013 range will also support LG Cloud, where LG Cloud enables folks to remotely stream high-quality content from just about anywhere they are at that point in time. Are you in the market for one of LG’s new Cinema 3D Smart TVs when they arrive? If you are, then it’d be best to work out your budget ASAP as CES 2013 is happening just next week.

Intel’s Rumored Set-Top Box And TV Subscription Service Might Not Make CES 2013

intel tv 640x359 Intels Rumored Set Top Box And TV Subscription Service Might Not Make CES 2013A couple of days ago we reported on a rumor that Intel could be set to debut a set-top box and a TV subscription service of their own come CES 2013. Unfortunately according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal, it looks like if that was one of the things you were looking forward to seeing at CES 2013, you could be disappointed. The publication has reported that Intel would be delaying the debut of their product because they are having a hard time trying to convince companies to license out individual channels. Given that Intel’s experience lies more in the backend side of things rather than creating consumer friendly devices, we can’t say that we’re surprised.

The report also quotes one cable operator who claims that unlike licensing a bundle of channels, licensing individual channels would be a lot more expensive and that his company and Intel were far from reaching an agreement. However the report also states that Intel has already managed to land one content deal but their sources declined to mention as to who that partner is. Either way since the previous report was merely a rumor, we guess it’s hard to be disappointed, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled nonetheless.

Samsung Evolution Kit for Smart TVs to get big reveal at CES 2013

Samsung will fully detail its Evolution Kit for Smart TVs at CES 2013, the company has confirmed, blessing 2012 sets with features set to debut next week as part of the 2013 range. The box – which slots into a nook on the back of models like the ES9000 we reviewed recently – contains a new processor, memory, and GPU, for faster internet browsing, better multitasking performance, and more responsive apps. The upgrade will also tweak the voice and motion control.

img_es9000_04-580x272

Exactly how the voice and motion systems will change is unclear. Currently, they allow you to control a Samsung TV by using the remote as a wireless microphone, asking it to load channels and apps, as well as dictating web URLs, while the integrated camera allows for navigation of the menus and of games via hand gestures.

Those features are likely to be refined even further for Samsung’s 2013 range of Smart TVs, and those who already bought a set last year won’t have to miss out. Samsung suggests this won’t be a one-time upgrade, either; “every year,” the company says, “consumers will now be able to enjoy the latest services.”

A new UI is on the cards for this year, with an updated Smart Hub featuring five panels for Live TV, video on demand, apps, internet, and other content. No word on pricing or availability of the Evolution Kit, but it’s likely to be cheaper than a brand new TV.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also teasing a “revolutionary” new TV for unveil next week.

Intel web TV scheme may miss CES 2013 after licensing headaches

Intel’s aim to have a web-based TV platform blending on-demand and cable content launched early in the new year may be scuppered by longer-than-expected media negotiations, potentially pushing the debut back until Q4 2013. Initially planned for late 2012, but delayed after content owners supposedly put up more of a licensing challenge than Intel first predicted, sources tell the WSJ that the new launch window is anything from mid-2013 to the end of the year.

intel_NUC

According to the more pessimistic tipster, “delays in reaching content-licensing agreements with entertainment companies that own major TV channels” remain the primary headache. That’s not exactly a new refrain; it’s stubbornness among the traditional media to bend to the unbundling whims of entertainment upstarts like Google and Apple which is believed to have prevented previous attempts to challenge the cable market.

Intel was apparently on track to demonstrate an early version of the unnamed web TV set-top box and service at CES 2013 next week, with previous leaks indicating a small-scale trial could begin in March. However, new whispers suggest TV has been taken off the menu, with only regular desktop and mobile processors to be discussed.

Unsurprisingly, it’s not hardware that has prompted the delays, with the rumored STB said to include social networking functionality to better join together viewers watching the same program in different locations.

Currently, a source close to the ongoing negotiations claims, Intel has inked a single deal with a content partner, though there’s no word on which that partner is. Owners of channels are traditionally reluctant to offer individual channels separately, preferring more expensive bundles where cable operators must license not only the high-profile they want, but a number of less widely-known channels as well.

Another TV company executive said his firm and Intel “were far from reaching an agreement on financial terms,” with the content owners demanding “far higher fees” than existing cable operators pay.
