ZTE to show off Grand S, world’s thinnest phablet, at CES

ZTE has announced that it will unveil its ultra-thin 5-inch phablet, the Grand S, at CES 2013, the upcoming mega tech event. The Grand S is only 6.9mm thick, making it the thinnest phablet to (eventually) hit the market. This comes shortly after it announced its other high-end phablet, the Nubia Z5, a sleek device that is unlike the Chinese company’s typically lower-end devices.

ZTE is going all-out when it comes to phablets, it seems, pumping out two high-end, ultra-thin handsets back-to-back. The Nubia Z5 got to hold the title of thinnest phablet for a full day before details about the Grand S were announced. Not many images are available, but those that have surface over at Weibo show a thin phone with a light rounded back and dark face.

As far as specs go, they’re as impressive as the Nubia Z5′s. The display measures in at 5-inches with a full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution. Around back, there’s a 13-megapixel camera, and presumably there’s a front camera as well, although that is unconfirmed. Inside you’ll find a Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. The only difference between the Grand S’s specs and the Nubia Z5′s is the battery – the Grand S has a lower capacity battery at 2500mAh.

The other difference is in price: the Nubia Z5 is priced at about $550USD, while the Grand S, if rumors are true, will cost about $450USD. This will put the handset at a lower price point than its competition. That’s all we know until CES rolls around, which we’ll be covering, so stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated as new details surface.

PDP Afterglow Multi-HDMI Cable Adds Light-up Color-Coding

Do you often get bamboozled trying to figure out which cable is which when wiring up your home theater gear? While you could simply put color-coded dots on the cable ends, that’s just not nearly as cool or geeky as these new HDMI cables with light-up color-coding.

afterglow light up hdmi cable

Coming soon from PDP, The Afterglow is a 6-foot-long HDMI cable that group four cables into one. The light-up LED heads make it easy to identify which cable is connected to which device, and just looks cool when connected.

What’s not clear is how much slack you’ll get at each end of the cable – since not all of your devices are going to be that close together. I can only imagine that the other end of the cable has a bit more distance between the connectors, but we’ll have to wait until PDP releases the full specs – which I’m guessing will turn up during CES in early January 2013.

Small LG TVs to Get Smart TV and Wi-Fi?

I was digging around on the Wi-Fi Alliance website checking out the latest certified devices today when I came across an interesting batch of small displays from LG, all with Wi-Fi support built in.

lg wifi certified displays

It appears that a wide variety of LG’s small LED-backlit LCD televisions, ranging in size from 22″ to 29″ will offer Wi-Fi in the upcoming model year. While I’m not certain of the use for the wireless connectivity, I’d bet it’s to provide access to LG’s Smart TV or other digital services through these more compact displays. Up until now, LG’s internet-connected displays have been designed for the living room, but this new feature could put streaming video, images and other digital media in your bedroom, den, kitchen or other location where a large display doesn’t make sense. Sure, you could always buy an add-on box like a Roku or Apple TV for those locations, but having the feature built into the set should keep the cost lower for consumers.

The exact details on these sets have yet to be revealed by LG, but I’d bet they’ll turn up at CES 2013 in a couple of weeks.

Samsung releases teaser video for CES 2013 Smart TV unveiling

Earlier today, we reported that Samsung gave a nice peak at its updated Smart TV user interface, which it plans to show off at the upcoming 2013 CES tech event. A few hours later, the Korean company then dropped a teaser video on YouTube also hinting at the unveiling, featuring awestruck TVs traveling to behold a Smart TV draped in cloth. Check out the video after the jump.

samsung tv

The video itself doesn’t tell us much in terms of what to expect of the new user interface, except perhaps that our TVs will crawl out the window and take the bus to go see it. A post Samsung made earlier today, however, states: “Samsung Electronics introduces a whole new “Smart Hub” at 2013 International CES in Las Vegas from Jan 8th. The new Smart Hub is Samsung Smart TV’s dedicated contents platform where viewers can enjoy various contents such as real time broadcasting TV programs, on-demand movies, apps, and photos.”

According to Samsung, the updated platform will offer a different background image and a simplified user interface to make it easier for viewers to find what they’re looking for. As can be seen from the images, the content seems easy to both take in visually and flip through manually without much hassle either way.

While all the attention has been focused on the Smart TV user interface, there’s been no word thus far about the televisions in terms of hardware – what is planned, what is to be expected, etc. What we do know is that the user interface update will be provided across Samsung’s lineup, not just the Series 8 upon which it is demonstrated.

LG announces its 2013 CES A/V devices, boasts 9.1-channel audio and NFC support

LG has been flaunting the products it will be showing off at CES 2013, the latest round of which is its A/V devices. The lineup includes a 9.1-channel home theater audio setup with NFC integration for simple pairing with a smartphone. Also included in the announcement is a Blu-ray player that includes – you guessed it – NFC connectivity.

The BH9430PW is a 9.1-channel home audio system featuring four multi-directional tallboy speakers, the 3D Surround Processor, and “near-zero” distortion. There is both an iPod dock and NFC compatibility, as well as Private Sound Mode, which allows the listener to send the audio to their smartphone for those times when only one person wants to hear what is playing over the audio system.

Also offering NFC is the BP730 Blu-ray player, which brings Smart TV-like features to any TV. With the BP730, users will have access to Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, and Hulu. The device offers content mirroring from external and mobile devices, such as tablets. The BP730 previously received the 2013 International CES Innovations Award.

Other products include the NB4530A Sound Bar, which offers 2.1-channel audio via 310W speakers for thin-profile televisions. The ND8630 Dual Docking Speaker offers plug and play support for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, and features an 80W speaker with support for AirPlay and Bluetooth. Finally, there’s the NP6630, a wireless portable 20W speaker offering NFC, Bluetooth, and AirPlay support.

LG’s President and CEO Havis Kwon had this to say about the A/V announcement. “A home theater system is much more than just a TV and speakers; it’s a comprehensive package. LG offers superb audio and video products to help consumers realize a truly immersive home cinema experience. By implementing advanced technologies, CINEMA 3D features, smart connectivity and control, LG will continue to lead the audio visual segment in 2013.”

Samsung Teases Its New Smart TV Bound For CES 2013 In Video

We already know that Samsung is already set to launch its new TV at CES 2013 next month. But just to gain momentum, and to excite us a bit, the company is releasing a new teaser for everyone to see. The roughly one-minute video depicts TVs coming to life and leaving their owner’s homes and shopping malls. Where they are going remains a mystery. We follow the TVs riding buses, cars, and even skateboards, while some of them are crossing the streets – all headed to that one place that is the city of Las Vegas. It is during this time that we realize that the TVs are all going to CES 2013 to check out Samsung’s latest Smart TV. The video ends with a large device, a TV that is, on display covered by a white veil.

Samsung Smart TV set for UI refresh at CES 2013

We’re ramping up rather quickly towards one of the biggest tech events of the year here in the USA with CES 2013, and with it Samsung intends on riding in with a full Smart TV user interface refresh. This update has been tipped by Samsung itself on its own Flickr account where it’s shared an image of one of its Series 8 model televisions from last year – this indicates that the user interface update will not be for new models only, but for legacy models as well. Good news for you Samsung Smart TV lovers of old!

This update appears to be bringing with it new ways to access your television channels with live broadcasts as well as massive amounts of on-demand shows and movies. This version will have a brand new background – an aesthetic tweak that could mean a lot of saved retinas – and a slightly smoother-looking interface overall. You’ve got the ability to work with your apps and photos as always and the full interface will be popping up inside of 2013 without a doubt.

“Samsung Electronics introduces a whole new “Smart Hub” at 2013 International CES in Las Vegas from Jan 8th. The new Smart Hub is Samsung Smart TV’s dedicated contents platform where viewers can enjoy various contents such as real time broadcasting TV programs, on-demand movies, apps, and photos. The platform changed the design of background image and simplified the user interface to better serve the customers.” – Samsung

This update does not, of course, tip us off as to what Samsung will be bringing to the smart television market as far as hardware goes. This update being shown on the Series 8 machine shows us that while the newer models will certainly be getting the upgrade, the software is made for their full lineup. There’s a massive Samsung CES press conference set for Monday, January 7th (that’s during CES, of course), that you’ll want to tune in for with SlashGear – we’ll be there right on the money!
