Shuttle gears up for CES with ‘we are not alien’ campaign, ominous video

Shuttle isn’t exactly a company known for aggressive marketing campaigns, but it looks to be changing its tune a bit in the lead up to CES, and it’s not too hard to see who its target is. While the company’s main website is still as bright and cheery as ever, the newly launched We Are Not AlienbWare.com is an entirely different tale, featuring an ominous teaser video that mixes Shuttle promos (and metaphors) in with footage from District 9. Of course, it is a teaser video, so it’s light on any details, but Shuttle is apparently promising something fairly big for CES. Hit up the link below to check out the video for yourself, or if it’s giving you fits, just hop on past the break and mash play.

ZyXEL to debut ‘world’s first’ LTE router at CES 2010

If we’re able to avert this looming “spectrum apocalypse” we’ve heard so much about, it looks like 2010 will be the year that many of you get to partake in LTE. What better way to indulge your lust for airborne data than ZyXEL’s newest, the ZLR-2070S LTE CPE/SOHO router? Apparently “the world’s first,” this guy features two VoIP ports, a four port 802.11n wireless switch, a USB port for storage or printer sharing, and data rates up to 50Mbps. Not bad, eh? We expect to hear more about this one in short order — it will make its society debut at next year’s CES. In the meantime, peep the PR for more info — it’s after the break.

Pixel Qi ramping production lines, multitouch (40-hour?) tablets at CES

We know you’re confused by the pronunciation of Pixel Qi (it’s Pixel chee, by the way). But really, does that matter? We’re just stoked to learn that its hybrid displays are hitting the assembly lines this month as the company ramps production in Q1. CEO, Mary Lou Jepsen, says that the first units will arrive in “specialized tablet devices with multi-touch,” the first of which will be on display at CES from what looks like multiple “customers.” They’ll also be available to DIYers sometime in the future. Jepsen, you’ll recall, was the original Chief Technology Officer on the OLPC project, but left to commercialize these 10-inch color 3Qi LCD displays that are readable in either direct tropical sunlight or no light at all thanks to a switchable backlight. As such, Pixel Qi is set to carve out a nice middle-ground between epaper displays and traditional LCDs that could see the advent of the 40-hour netbook / tablet. No, really.

AMD readying a demo of the Blu-ray 3D standard, might not wait for it to exist first

AMD and CyberLink, which recently integrated SENSIO 3D technology into its PowerDVD player, are already touting a 2010 CES demo promising to show off their implementation of “the forthcoming Blu-ray stereoscopic 3D standard.” While the world continues to wait for an announcement on what the 3D Blu-ray standard will actually entail (backwards compatible 2D combo discs, and Full HD stereoscopic technology are definitely on the list) AMD is ready to leverage its position as a contributing member of the Blu-ray Disc Association and make sure that when discs hit the market — likely around the time Avatar is released at home — it has compatible software and hardware available. We’ve prepped and ready for the glasses-required trials that promise to be featured at many booths during next months Las Vegas experience, so a note to potential exhibitors: sports and videogames are the best bet for an impressive 3D showing, bring Space Harrier 3D for extra bonus points.

Inbrics announces Android MID, promises ‘inspirational moments’ (video)

Inbrics, a company known in Seoul for its VoIP solutions, looks set to rock your world with an Android MID early next year at CES. All we have for you at present are the barest of specs, machine translated Korean PR that declares “a full convergence of the future,” and one of those vague, uplifting videos that demonstrates the myriad of ways that its one platform can dramatically change your life — without ever really telling you what it does. The device itself is a QWERTY landscape slider that features an AMOLED touchscreen, GPS, compass, WiFi, and an ARM Cortex A8 800MHz processor. Experience the inspirational moment after the break.

OCZ needs a name for USB 3.0 solid state drive

That faint sound you can hear right now is the approaching sonic boom of a new portable speedster. OCZ, already the proud patriarch of some pretty radical SSD varieties, has confirmed a new external drive that will hook up via the super speedy USB 3.0 interconnect (whose uncertain future we’ve discussed here). It’s no secret that SSDs tend to get all choked up around current-gen USB or Firewire connections, so we always welcome forward-thinking new drives with open arms. OCZ is still in the process of crowdsourcing a name for its new product, so don’t look for specs just yet, but if there are any mysteries left by January, rest assured that CES 2010 will clear them all up.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge to bridge gap between IdeaPads and pro machines?

Dear Lenovo, thank you for being so loose-lipped about your forthcoming products, we most certainly appreciate it. Joining the now fully detailed X100e is a purported new line of entry-level ThinkPads — dubbed the ThinkPad Edge. We’ve only got the one source and that image above as evidence, but the details appear to make sense in terms of Lenovo’s overall lineup strategy. Set to fit in between the professional ThinkPads and more consumer-oriented IdeaPads, the Edge will start off with 13.3-inch units sporting a choice of low-voltage dual-core AMD or Intel processors, up to eight hours of battery life, and a robust 4GB of memory paired to 500GB of storage. The word is that we’ll see the new machines make an appearance by CES 2010 at the latest, and we’ve got a purported spec sheet for your perusal after the break.

Boxee Signs Deal with Device Manufacturer for Boxee Box

boxee logo.jpg

Online video platform Boxee has signed a deal with an unknown device manufacturer to produce a “Boxee box” that will stream the site’s content. The company will show a mock-up of the box and reveal more details at its December 7 meet-up in Brooklyn, NY.

Boxee has been working on this deal since the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), CEO Avner Ronen said in a blog post. “During the show we met with several device manufactures interested in embedding Boxee into their existing devices or building a dedicated Boxee device,” he wrote.

Boxee has secured a partnership with a consumer electronics company, but they cannot “say more about the partner or the specs of the device,” Ronen said.

“This will be the first connected device running Boxee, but the idea is to provide consumers with a way to get Boxee in their living rooms, no matter whether it’s on a Connected TV, game console, set-top box, BluRay player, computer, etc,” he continued. “Our goal is to be on every Connected device in the living room.”

Boxee shows off its new look at Beta Unveiling jam December 7

We won’t cancel our trips to Vegas just yet, but Boxee is planning on giving users an early peek at its new beta release — with all new UI, queue, navigation and search features — December 7 at the Music hall of Williamsburg. Beta Unveiling visitors will be the first to get their hands on the new version and see new applications being launched by partners, leading to early access beta testers giving it a four week shakedown run before the planned wide release January 7 at CES. Any ideas what form Boxee might take in this next step on its road to commercial viability?

QUE proReader hitting Barnes & Noble retail stores in 2010

In a rather odd unfolding of events, it seems as if Barnes & Noble is finally clearing up the mystery behind that Plastic Logic e-reader slated to hit its retail locations by Spring of 2010. After making said announcement, the book seller then went out and introduced an e-book reader of its very own in the Nook, and only now are we learning that the Plastic Logic-built QUE proReader will also be splashing down at the outfit sometime next year. In a brief release posted today, we’re told that the recently teased big-screen reader (8.5- x 11-inches) will be sold throughout B&N’s retail footprint and on its website; makes sense given that B&N is powering the proReader’s online e-book store, but the fact that it’ll be placed prominently near the outfit’s own (somewhat competing) device is certainly interesting. We’re expecting to see more come CES 2010, and seriously, with the rate at which these readers are hitting brick-and-mortar locations, Amazon might want to consider implementing some kind of physical trial in order to not go overlooked in its corner of the web.
