Pantech Discover coming to AT&T January 11th, brings 720p and 13MP camera for $50

Pantech Discover coming to AT&T January 11th, brings 720p for $50

Pantech’s built a reputation in the states as a budget brand, but that doesn’t mean it’s pushing out forgettable phones — on the contrary, the Korean manufacturer has cranked out solid devices like the Burst and Flex over the past year. To start off 2013, Pantech is bumping things up a notch by launching the Discover (what we previously saw as the Magnus) on AT&T January 11th. For $50 on contract, it’s actually a well-stocked handset: the Discover sports a 4.8-inch 720p display, 13MP rear camera / 2MP front-facing cam, 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 Pro, NFC, Android 4.0 and a 2,100mAh battery. We’re pretty intrigued by the curvacious design; from the images, it brings back memories of the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc. On the software side, the Discover will come pre-loaded with the same Easy Experience Mode option that we saw on the Flex, as well as AT&T’s DriveMode app, which will send auto-replies to text messages when you’re driving. We’ll be getting our hands on the Discover shortly, but feast on the spec list and press release below the break while you wait.

OnLive extending LG partnership to G3 series televisions

OnLive extending LG partnership to G3 series televisions

Are you way into cloud gaming and own an LG Smart TV of the G3 series variety? You’re in luck, as OnLive this morning announced support for that very line of Google TV-powered LG televisions, bringing a library of “over 300 titles” to the platform. The G2 series already got that support back in November, if you recall, but it appears that OnLive’s reach is expanding across a variety of LG Smart televisions. Should you wish to get in on the action, you’ll need a Universal OnLive Wireless controller to actually play any of the games available. We’ll be giving it a look later on this week during CES 2013 to see what’s different — if anything — from OnLive’s presence on other platforms.

HGST launches the $99 Travelstar 1TB 25inch HDD, crams it inside its Touro, GDrive and GRaid units

Henry Ford may have felt that your Model T could come in any color “as long as it is black,” but HGST feels differently about consumer choice. It’s announcing its latest hard drive, the 1TB, 2.5-inch Travelstar HDD, which goes toe-to-toe with other 7,200 RPM drives like the Constellation.2 and Scorpio Blue. If you want to sling one of the new units inside your current machine, the vanilla model, available later in Q1, will set you back $99.99, but HGST is also offering a swathe of external drives to suit your needs. If you’d call yourself a consumer, then you can snag the Touro Mobile Pro, which offers a bonus 3GB of cloud storage space for (£99.99) while professionals can pick up the 1TB G-DRIVE Mini for £149.99 or the 2TB G-RAID Mini, which can be yours in exchange for £339.99 of your earth currency. Wanna know more? Drive your jalopy down after the break.

Intel, Plastic Logic and Queen’s U build the PaperTab: a flexible e-paper tablet (video)

Intel, Plastic Logic and Queen's University build the PaperTab a flexible, epaper tablet concept video

Plastic Logic may have bowed out of building its own e-readers, but that’s not stopping the company from making its presence felt at CES. It’s teaming up with Intel and Queen’s University on the PaperTab, a 10.7-inch tablet concept built around a flexible, e-paper touchscreen. The prototype runs a Sandy Bridge-era Core i5 processor that lets it stand on its own, but it’s ultimately designed to work as part of a team: position awareness lets multiple PaperTabs join together to share a work area, and tapping one tablet with content can send it to a waiting document in another. The bendy nature isn’t just for durability and a paper-like feel, either, as readers can flip through pages just by bending the relevant side. A fuller reveal is planned for January 8th, but you can get an initial sense of how the plastic slate works through the video after the break.
