Chalkboard Car Invites Street Art and Graffiti from Passersby

Ever snickered as you walked past a car that vandals drew stuff on with soap? That laughter will disappear as quickly as it came when you reach your car and see that they’ve done the same to you.

This happens more often than most people like. But someone who wants the opposite to happen – and by opposite, we mean that he wants people to draw on his car – is artist Phillip Romano.

He coated his 2004 Hyundai with gallons of chalkboard paint and fastened a vanity license plate that says ‘DRAWONME.’ As you can see, people are more than happy to oblige.

Hopefully they leave the windows alone, because that’s one area the chalkboard paint isn’t on, for obvious reasons.

Watch This Awesome Chalk Animation Play Snake in 3D

Who’s to say if some methods of animation are better than others, but some are differently rarer. It’s not often you see someone animate in chalk, but that’s exactly what artist Chris Carlson did. And while the results are cool, it certainly wasn’t exactly an efficient method poissible; it took 30 hours of chalkin’ over four days. But the result is pretty sweet. I wish the game I had on my old Nokia brick had looked like that. [YouTube] More »

Chalktrail Lets Kids Make Sidewalk Graffiti with Their Bikes

Kids love to draw and paint on things. Sometimes they make a mess of your walls, tables and floors, but one place that’s just fine for childhood creativity is the sidewalk – assuming they use chalk for their artwork, not spray paint. Now, kids can make drawings on the sidewalk while riding their bikes.

The Chalktrail is a nifty invention which connects securely onto the back wheel of a bicycle, lowering a fat piece of chalk over the ground, so each and every move of the bike is sketched out onto the sidewalk or street. The chalk holde actually fits bikes with wheels from 12 to 29 inches in diameter, so kids and adults can play with it.

A single piece of chalk will last for 1.5 miles of riding, and tight and repeating turns on the blacktop will result in some pretty cool Spirograph-like designs.

You can buy the Chalktrail over at Fat Brain Toys for $19.95(USD) including a single piece of non-toxic, washable chalk, or for $26.90 with a refill of 4 extra chalk pieces. In 2013, a special version of the Chalktrail is coming for scooters (as shown in the video below).

Chalk Road-Maker Turns Parking Lots Into Big Wheel Race Tracks [Toys]

Here’s another one of those “why the hell didn’t this exist when I was young?” products that give you yet another misguided reason to have kids. It’s a simple folding contraption that holds a couple of pieces of chalk and leaves behind a perfectly sized roadway as it’s dragged over a paved surface. More »

3D Mario Time Lapse Art Creation Captured on Video

Like most gamers that grew up in the 80s, I’m a big fan of Super Mario Bros. This is one of the most iconic games from my youth, right up there along with Pac-Man. In tribute to Mario, an artist named Chris Carlson has created a truly epic piece of 3D chalk artwork.

It’s amazing to me that the image he draws is made with plain old chalk, yet looks completely three-dimensional. Carlson and his friend shot a time-lapse video to give you an idea how he creates the 3D art. It’s very impressive how he pulls it off starting with a flat perspective grid used to draw all the blocks for the pixel art Mario. He also uses a large metal ruler and copious amounts of chalk.

You need to watch the video for yourself to see how he pulls it off.  The video even has the familiar Super Mario theme song in the background, ensuring that it will be stuck in your head all day. I wonder how long it took Chris to create the image – it’s hard to tell since it’s a time-lapse video.

This Is How Artists Draw All That Amazing 3D Street Chalk Art [Video]

Ever seen how they draw those forced perspective drawings that look three-dimensional from an specific angle? This time lapse video of Chris Carlson drawing Mario jumping over a NES gamepad shows how it is done. Pretty awesome. [Yababoon via Stuff I Stole via The Daily What] More »
