AViiQ Portable Charging Station: Never Lose Your Cables Again

It really sucks when your gear runs out of juice and you’ve got no easy way of recharging. It’s even worse when you’re stuck somewhere that doesn’t have any power outlets or you just don’t have the time to charge up your gadgets. Admittedly, the AViiQ Portable Charging Station won’t solve all of these problems, but you’ll never be without your cables again.

The AViiQ Portable Charging Station stores all of your charging devices in a compact and convenient sleeve. This time, the AViiQ station even has a battery-power, so you’ll be able to juice up your iDevices no matter where you are. There’s a 4-port USB hub allowing you to charge up to 4 devices simultaneously. It also comes with a 5200 mAh battery, which should allow you to charge both your iPad and iPhone almost completely. However, it does weigh 1.55 lbs, and measures 11 inches in length, so you won’t be able to lug it around in your pocket.

It’s available for $169.99(USD) on Amazon. Last year’s model – which doesn’t include the battery pack – is on sale for just $39.99.

iBattz BattStation Tough Pro keeps your gadgets going

Anyone who travels or is away from the home or office a lot knows that keeping your gadgets charged can be a significant challenge. You can get battery cases for your smartphone, but if you need to keep something larger like a tablet charged it can be a serious challenge. A new and large external battery has launched called the iBattz BattStation Tough Pro.

The portable battery pack is ruggedized and water resistant to survive life in the wild. The outside of the device is covered in silicone and can survive drops. It also has an integrated LED flashlight to help you see where you are going.

The external battery pack is available in two configurations that differ in battery capacity. One of the configurations has a 7200 mAh battery inside and the other has an 8400mAh battery inside. Both capacities have the ability to charge two USB devices at the same time.

The smaller capacity battery pack sells for $29.90 and the higher capacity battery cells are $39.90. The only downside I see to this device is that you would have to carry your device’s charging cable with you on the go. Both of the Tough Pro external batteries are available now at Amazon and other online retailers.

iRock Rocking Chair Charges Your iPad While You Rock

It looks like modded rocking chairs are getting more popular this year. First, it was Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex’s Rocking-Knit chair that knitted while you rocked. And now it’s the iRock.

If you’re not into knitting but love rocking anyways, then maybe the iRock is more up your alley.

Using the energy produced by your rocking movement, the iRock charges up your iPad up to 35% for every hour of rocking. It’s also got a pair of speakers built into the headrest and a 25W-per-channel amp.

The chair itself is made from Swedish oak and pine and is available in five colors, including white, black, green, cyan and magenta. The iRock is pretty pricey at $1,300(USD), but what did you expect from a chair with a built-in iPad dock and sound station?

If you’re on the go a lot, you know it’s hard to keep your gadgets charged up, especially if you use them frequently. Anyone who owns a 4G smartphone knows that if you surf the web, make a few phone calls, and update your Facebook page, you’re lucky if your device can last half a day. A bunch of tips will be available to allow direct charging of specific devices like the iPhone or Android smartphones. It’s maker, GoalZero promises the device is to fully charge a smartphone in three hours, and its portable battery module can be recharged with 10 hours of sunlight.

Goal Zero's Switch 8 Charging Kit appears

If you were put off by the price of Goal Zero’s Sherpa, then here’s something that might be more deserving of that slot in your backpack. The Switch 8 Solar Charging Kit costs $100 and bundles together a 2,200mAh battery and Nomad 3.5 solar panel. The manufacturer says that the 8-watt dynamite-shaped battery can be tanked up via sunlight in six hours, although this time can be reduced to four if you use a USB power source before you head into the wilderness. Interchangeable tips, which will be sold separately in the coming months, will allow compatibility with a variety of devices and also let you use the battery pack as a fan or flashlight — no cranking or pedaling required.

Switch 8 solar charger harnesses the sun

If you’re on the go a lot away from a power outlet and have gadgets that you need to keep charged an external battery will help you keep going. The problem with normal external batteries is that they have to be plugged into an outlet typically to charge themselves. A new solar charger has surfaced called the Switch 8.

This charger has a stick-shaped battery with the USB port at one end and a USB plug on the other. The solar panel itself looks like a small notebook and folds open revealing a pair of panels that harness energy from the sun and send it to the rechargeable battery.

Users can then plug anything that uses a USB port to charge into the other end of that battery for power. The manufacturer claims that the battery itself can be completely charged using only the sun in about six hours. The lithium-ion battery has interchangeable tips allowing it to work with just about anything from USB to specific devices such as the iPhone, Droid devices, and lots more.

It appears initially the device will come with the USB adapter and additional tips and accessories for the Switch 8 will launch this coming spring. The Goal Zero Switch 8 Solar Recharging Kit can be purchased right now at REI retailers and online for $99.99.

Booksi Recycled Book iPhone Docks: Don’t Read While Docked

I’ve never though of recycling books, since I’m a bibliophile, but there’s something marvelous about these docks that are made from old books. Rich Neeley custom makes them for the discerning gadgeteer.

Booksi docks by RichNeeleyDesigns look great – especially on a bookshelf. The charging dock is integrated into the book’s cover, and twisted around through the book so that there is actually minimal damage to the book. You could probably read it – assuming you undock your phone.

He’s even got some docks for the iPhone 5 and its new 8-pin Lightning connector.

Most of the docks work with a number of 30-pin iOS devices, like iPods, iPhones and some even work with iPads. Prices start at around $49(USD) and go up depending on the book or books used. Rich offers a wide variety of popular books in his shop which are ready to go, but he also accepts custom book requests.

Scosche is next up with Lightning accessories, brings chargers for iPads and iPhones alike

Scosche is next up with Lightningcompatible accessories, brings 5W and 12W chargers

If you’ve snagged one of Apple’s new iThings complete with 30-pin dock connector-replacing Lightning ports, Scosche is the next manufacturer (after Belkin) to offer up a compatible line of accessories. The variety of car and wall chargers come in several 12W and 5W variants, with the more powerful ones pushing enough juice to quick charge those fourth generation iPads and iPad minis. Of course, while they can provide design alternatives like multiple ports that Apple’s official hardware doesn’t cover, there’s not a price break coming with the cheapest strikeDRIVE car charger starting at $29.99, while the most expensive item listed is the strikeBase pro dual USB wall charger (pictured above) and lightning cable setup for $49.99. There’s more details at the source link if you’re interested in purchasing. Apple users let us know what your plan is — making do with just the one new charger, slapping on a $29 adapter, or sticking with old hardware for now / switching to a new platform to avoid the new connector altogether?

Belkin fills the void with first third-party Lightning accessories for Apple devices

Belkin unveils first thirdparty accessories for Apple Lightning connectors

When Apple dropped the 30-pin connector in favor of Lightning for the iPhone 5, new iPods and new iPads, it also dropped much of the current accessory market: short of an expensive adapter, years of collecting docks and more exotic peripherals were for nought. Belkin is stepping into that vacuum with what it says are the first officially sanctioned third-party Lightning accessories. Neither its Charge + Sync Dock (seen at left) for the iPhone 5 nor its Car Charger for Lightning (right) are what we’d call revolutionary, but they both cover missing pieces of the puzzle — including Apple’s, as the tech firm skipped making an iPhone dock of its own for this generation. Should either the audio-supporting dock or the iPad-capable charger sound appealing, both are up for pre-orders today and will ship in mid-November for $30.

Why Is Apple Including an iPhone Charger With The iPad Mini?

Apple traditionally includes a different charger with the iPhone than the iPad. Until Apple recently released a 12-watt adapter, the iPad received a grounded 10-watt adapter, whereas the iPhone and iTouch got a 5-watt affair in the iconic cubic shape. However, the early reports indicated iPad Mini seems to be shipping with a normal, 5-watt adaptor, as opposed to the 10 or 12-watt adapters that charge the iPad much faster.  (more…)
